If for sake of things, a group of goblins worth 300 xp gets overcome by the party, does each character get 300xp or just an equal share of it?

By default it's divided evenly. So 5 PCs get 60 each in this scenario.

It gets divided among all participants, if you have NPCs help out, they get a share as well.

Alternatively, no one gets any XP and you level up the group based when the plot says so.

Makes it a heck of a lot easier to deal with.
