So I'm thinking of throwing a were allosaurus at a low level party. Thing is just throwing a large (template) lizardfolk with the lycanthrope template doesn't create a creature anywhere near as dangerous as a regular allosaurus but it says that CR is base creature or animal whichever is higher +1, which would be a CR 8 with like 20 hp

Does pathfinder still add a bunch of animal hit dice to a lycanthropy? That may be the source of the confusion.

There are no additional HD added upon applying the lycanthrope template.

I guess I was just being way too tired, I wasn't thinking about it correctly. It's the same rule as if you wanted to play the creature, you have to be a minimum of that CR to be/use the creature, so in order to be a were allosaurus you need to be a minimum of a level/CR 7 character/creature before the template can be added

That would explain why all the example lycanthropies have class levels.

I think that has more to do with the fact that adventurers are the ones most likely to survive a lycanthrope encounter to contract the affliction themselves. Commoners and the like just end up dead :smalltongue:
