Player wants a Triton MC Bard with a starting dip of Fighter 1.

Oooooookay...

The hard question was, “What Instrument does a Triton Bard play?”

I went with his/her voice. Entertainer background - choose from Singer, Storyteller, Poet, or Actor. I am the only non-musician in my extended family. I have no idea how you make music underwater!

Conch shell could be a nice one (e.g. Misenus, Little Mermaid), which I'd probably co-opt the Horn Proficiency for if no new (mechanical) instruments were being created.

Percussion and string instruments.
A harp could fit I guess.

I fed "underwater orchestra" to Youtube and I got some sort of German game show:

I don't understand a word, but it is clear the violin won.

This was my immediate first thought.

That is funny. 😉😂

This was my immediate first thought.

Having used tapping to communicate underwater as a kid on the West Coast, I should have remembered this plus from the uncounted number of times my youngest played this video then DVD replacement. Good!

Will put the idea forward.

Worth thought, thanks.

as others note, certain things will work poorly underwater - like, say, a trumpet. Anything that doesn't use air, and can produce low frequencies that will travel far would be far more useful in a marine culture - so maybe large drums, or stringed instruments that vibrate the water.

Vocal would certainly be the most common underwater. Consider that whale song is a real thing in the world and can be heard for miles.

Any sort of stringed instrument would be weird underwater since the resistance of the water on the strings will create a completely different pitch than it would above water. That being said it could be a fun thing for the player to constantly gripe about the acoustics of their instrument out of water. It would make the most sense for the instrument to be one that is not made of wood or metal at all. A harp made out of bone would be a solid choice.

Any sort of instrument that requires reverberation inside the instrument (lute, lyre, guitar, etc) would be a problem based on the materials needed to create the echo inside the instrument not being able to survive underwater.

Would it be possible to make something like a panflute that would create noise by water going through it verses air? It looks like it is something that could be possible https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydraulophone.

Anything that can play underwater should work.

Nick idea of Vocal music based on the Whale song is a nice idea.

Air guitar.

You mean water guitar, as there's no air to strum underwater.

Some version of the glass harmonica (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass_harmonica) would be cool - an instrument with a bunch of glass parts that vibrate at different tones when stroked. Maybe you could invent some less fragile undersea material to make it more durable.

That is funny. 😉😂

If someone's interested, the candidates in that show had to guess how many of the four instruments would still sound similar when played underwater. The correct answer was two (the trumpet and the violin)

The newt play the flute
The carp play the harp
The plaice play the bass
And they soundin' sharp
The bass play the brass
The chub play the tub
The fluke is the duke of soul

The ray he can play
The lings on the strings
The trout rockin' out
The blackfish she sings
The smelt and the sprat
They know where it's at
An' oh that blowfish blow

Why was the Triton bard a good musician?

He really knew his scales.
