Hey, I’m looking to start a game with my friends and family wherein each player/group controls a nation and it’s resources. I’m looking for something we can play casually, where the players can send me a message dictating their nation’s intentions, and I could update the world-state once a week or as needed. Ideally each player will have to manage their diplomatic relationships with other players, as well as the economic and environmental factors of the region they are controlling. Any recommendations?

Thanks,
Jake

I don't know how simple or complex you're hoping for, but have you looked at the EMPIRE! rules (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?535522-EMPIRE4!-Rules-and-Administration) on this forum? It's designed for PbP forum play but you could easily adapt it to a board game type thing with actions on a whiteboard or something.

Two completely different systems come to mind:

The box set and campaign setting Birthright (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birthright_(campaign_setting)). It's a nation running system for 2nd Edition AD&D. Probably one of the better campaign settings for 2e, but the old school game may be too complex for some people.

Dawn of Worlds (https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://www.clanwebsite.org/games/rpg/Dawn_of_Worlds_game_1_0Final.pdf) (free pdf). It's its own system, and takes up about 10 pages or so in its entirety. Simply game with tons to do. Each player starts off as a god who makes some part of the world and together everyone builds the world how they want. Eventually, you make races, and civilizations, and cultures. Those cultures eventually go to war, trade with each other, etc... You could skip the First Age (world building) and go straight to the Second Age (Species generation) or the Third Age (Culture building) to play out a nation style game.

A few more ideas:

Pathfinder's Kingmaker campaign. You start with your own nation and have to build it up in a D&D-like world.

Running the Diplomacy (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diplomacy_(game)) board game (there's even apps for it, and it can all be done by email, too). You run certain nations in Europe and have a goal of taking over all of Europe, but the other players are all doing the same. Build alliances, betray one another, tell lies and give promises, move armies, conquer nations and defend your own. Fantastic game.

ACKS (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/m/product/99123). Adventure Conquer Kings System. While it has the adventuring aspect down, it also had a good economy system and a nation building system.

Here's a game called Kingdom (http://www.lamemage.com/kingdom/). A game about running a kingdom, or any other organization. Also by the same people, Microscope (http://www.lamemage.com/microscope/). Could also be used to run nations.

There is Reign for the ORE system. Not tried any of the One Roll Engine games, but Reign is about being the movers and shakers in a kingdom.

Pathfinder's Kingmaker campaign. You start with your own nation and have to build it up in a D&D-like world.

Kingmaker's really more of a traditional D&D campaign with nationbuilding rules appended to it - the kingdom sort-of becomes a character in its own right. It's not really player against player kingdom clashes as such. And it doesn't really get started with the nationbuilding until around level 4 or so. Frankly you could just take out its nationbuilding rules and dispense with the campaign entirely.

I'm running a very similar campaign right now using FateCore. You can describe anything as a character, and subsequently, play it as such. It works great. We've had armies clashing, trade wars, and nation wide spells.
You do need to change some of the skills, but that is pretty easy.

I think Legacy (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/237393/Legacy-Life-Among-the-Ruins-2nd-Edition) would be a good fit for this if you're okay with a post-apocalyptic setting. If you're not, they also have a bunch of setting books, plus I don't think it would be too hard to adapt the system for it yourself if you want.

Greg Stolze's Reign wants to do just that. A 2nd edition is upcoming.

Hi!

I just released yesterday the pre-launch for a Kickstarter campaign that will do exactly that (kind of a Birthright-reboot).
If you want to know more about it, you can send me a pm (or check the crowd funding thread of this forum, I will post the link there later today).

Cheers.
