Character all about shields

I want my character to be all about his shield and defending others.
I am having trouble deciding on the class and would like some ideas.
Race: Eladrin level: 3 alignment: Good
he has been in a war and has an affliction that (rarely) causes wildmagic affects and that is the only real back story he has at the moment.

Anything works feel free to pitch multiclass and homebrew.
dont hold back throw any ideas you have my way.

I hate to say it, but this might be begging for a Sorcadin; Paladin gets you the Proficiencies and gets you the Protection Fighting Style [shield, defending others], and Wild Magic Sorcerer for, well, Wild Magic.

Me and the DM have been playing around with the idea that the wild magic surges can happen due to a build up of mana or just as part of failing saves instead of it needing me to directly cast a spell. This way I can avoid having to be a spell caster if I want to go in a different class direction.
