View Full Version : Need rules verification/clarrification... Halbert + GWM + PM...

So my (latest) idea is to get 3 attacks per turn with a Halberd using GWM for the -5/+10 effect. With the Polearm Mastery feat, I can attack again as a bonus action using the back end of the weapon for 1d4 + STR/DEX/CHA mod dmg. Can I use the -5/+10 effect of GWM on this bonus action 1d4 attack as well?

...And sorry about the repeat. The forum won't let me delete the mis-spelled duplicate of this thread. :(

And to answer the question: Yes. It's an attack with a weapon that fits the requirements for GWM. That's one reason the combination is quite strong. +10 damage swamps the weapon dice completely.

so it's end up being 1d10 + 5 (attack mod) + 10 and if I had the Hexblade Curse on them it'd be another +4 (prof bonus) damage on top of that on three hits during a single turn for a total of 2d10 +1d4 + 57 (15 + 30 + 12)?

Assuming Extra Attack (from somewhere):

* 24.5 (1d10 + 15 + 4) (first attack)
* 24.5 (1d10 + 15 + 4) (second attack)
* 21.5 (1d4 + 15 + 4) (BA attack)

For a total of 70.5 (2d10 + 1d4 + 57) if everything hits.

However, since the average hit rate is ~65% against level-appropriate foes, and you're 25% below that, you're only hitting 40% of the time. This makes your average damage ~ 28.2 (not counting for crits, which don't do much since so much comes from the static mods, or the reroll 1's/2's from GWM since that's too much of a pain, and still only affects the damage dice).

Someone without GWM is doing 0.65*(2d10 + 18) = 0.65 x 29 = 18.9. So it's a significant boost, but at the cost of two feats. Still quite powerful, and one of the stock "do all the damages" build-types.

You’ll probably want a consistent source of advantage, like the Barbarian’s Reckless Attack or the Warlock’s Darkness/Devil’s Sight.

I'd go vengeance paladin's Vow of Enmity

Note that by doing so you'll limit the Hexblade's Curse (since IIRC that requires warlock > level 2) or push back your ASIs, which might mean that this tactic won't come online until quite late.

Yeah, I figure that unless I get a really good roll for stats, say a 16 if not a 17 or 18, I'd have to go fighter 6 to compensate, then go hexblade next and paladin last. (I really hate rolling for stats, but the last two campaigns the dms have made us roll for stats.

I COULD go battlemaster to compensate for the -5s on at least a few attacks.
