Something that I've been idly curious about for a while: what is the maximum number of prohibited schools that you can fit on one character?

So far, I'm up to 6. That number relies on the following:

Take Changeling Wizard at first level (Specialise in Illusion/Transmutation, Prohibit Conjuration/Enchantment/Evocation)
Take Human Heritage as your first level feat
Be a focussed specialist (Prohibit Necromancy)
Become an Incantatrix (Absurdly prohibit Transmutation, even though it is one of your specialised schools)
Become a Red Wizard (Prohibit Abjuration, even though this means you can no longer use your Incantatrix class features)

This build can only cast Divination and Illusion spells, but I'm wondering if anyone knows any ways to make the build even more absurd. Can we build a Wizard who has somehow prohibited all of their schools of magic?

Unfortunately you may not ban the Illusion school through any means that I can tell. You might be able to ban your illusion school, but I don't know how it would be done. Perhaps a flaw?

Divination can't be prohibited, right?

Divination can't be prohibited, right?NEVER!!!

...Err, at least, not by any option I know of, anyway.

Weird note. There is a knight class in dragonlance that can make you specialize in divination, even if you're a sorcerer. Does that help somehow.

Yes.

Start with 3 Int.

Better to start with 9 Int, so the character in question is at least smart enough to understand how screwed he is.

Ironically I think it was possible to be a wizard with 9 int in 1st edition and still cast up to like 5th level spells?

Minimum Intelligence for a magic user was 9, and you could cast up to 4th level spells with that Int. 10 = 5th, 12 =6th, 14=7th, 16=8th, and 18=9th level spells.

IIRC, the spell lists for Beguilers and Warmages effectively give them 7 and 8 prohibited schools, respectively. (And if I wanted to be really asinine, I could suggest that fighters have nine.)

How many spell schools do dread necromancers have access to, again?

Thanks all, looks like 6 might be it!

Dragon 327 had a flaw to give spontaneous casters 2 prohibited schools. If you can make wizard count as a spontaneous caster at 1st level, you might be able to apply that.

Thanks Maat Mons, the flaw prohibits you from banning divination, which is problematic (even if you could otherwise qualify). =

Separately to the above, my Googling of Dragon 327 found the following pre-existing threads (which I can't link to, due to my low post count):

Highest number of schools bannable?
Is it possible to ban every school of spells (except divination)?

Those threads refer to a Wizard of High Sorcery from Dragonlance, which lets you ban two schools of magic (just not the right schools for my Changeling).

I'll keep plugging away, but I'm afraid my poor Changeling might be stuck with two schools of magic (plus Universal) forever!

IIRC, the spell lists for Beguilers and Warmages effectively give them 7 and 8 prohibited schools, respectively. (And if I wanted to be really asinine, I could suggest that fighters have nine.)Technically, neither of those classes are have any prohibited schools - School Specialization (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/sorcererWizard.htm#schoolSpecialization):
Spells of the prohibited school or schools are not available to the wizard, and she can’t even cast such spells from scrolls or fire them from wands. So no, they're don't have any prohibited schools (Yes, not even Fighter!)

But if we're speaking just about the presence of spells in the list, then Beguiler got 7 schools out of 8 (sans Necromancy), and Warmage - 7 out of 8 too (sans Enchantment); also, both classes are have no spells of the "Universal school"

How many spell schools do dread necromancers have access to, again? All the 8 schools (but, again, not to the "Universal school")

Divination can't be prohibited, right?Funny fact: according to the Book of Vile Darkness, Divination is a prohibited school of Orcus
