Notably they didn't like how small the "equipment" section is.

None of the official character sheets (http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/character_sheets)?

The equipment box is too small. So, I usually add another blank paper where I write all the loot we find.

As soon as you get your hands on a Bag of Holding, every box for equipment is too small! :-)

The 3-page sheets are my favorite. It's easy enough to put the starting equipment in the small box on the first page, and everything else I've found during play in the much bigger Treasure box on the second page.

Well, I've not shown them all the variants, but they kind all have the same problems.

I just have paper and pen with me and write everyting down then I'll add it to the excel sheet I made and print that to take with me next time and I'll scratch whatever is used.

I'm still looking for a good sheet to write a familiar, pet or animal companion on instead of having to copy the stat block.

Alternatively, you could....

Print the standard Character Sheet two-sided on a size-A3 paper!

If it helps, in 3.5 we had the same problem, so what most of our group does is track our inventory and equipment on a separate lined paper sheet, and screw the official sheet and its tiny expectation of what an adventurer carries.

I've never been satisfied with any of the official character sheets. I feel like ability mods need to be more prominent, along with gear stats. We found the DM Guild kid-friendly sheets to work pretty well. My only complaint is that I wish there was an obvious place to put your actual ability scores as they do come up from time to time. But all in all I can live with it.

To help reduce clutter, we use the Hardcode X spell cards. They're not perfect (some spells are unnecessarily split onto two cards) but again I can live with it.

Maybe someday I'll make my own versions of these things.

This is one of the reasons I use the squire app on a tablet

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.herd.ddnext&hl=en_US

Then you can import all the classes from places in here

If I weren't using Fantasy Grounds I would use binder paper and lay out the data in a way that works for me.

Most of our group uses various character sheet apps on their phone / tablets.

They can be handy as they do most of the micro math for you, and they are easy to send copies to the GM for.

I'm using an App. Probably not what you're looking for, but on the plus side you can write down virtually as much as you want in all the fillable non numeric sections. I won't advertise, but it's one of the popular ones.

Just say that the "Equipment" section is for attuned stuff and have a separate sheet entirely for inventory tracking?

I really like the Class Character Sheets from DMSGuild.

These are the ones I've started using for my paper (non-app) games.

Yes, the official Alternate sheet is the one I always use as well (with skills sorted by ability, not the overly stylized Alternate 2).

The larger equipment section is nice, and I think the attack/spellcasting is a bit bigger too. The features section is smaller, but it hasn't been a problem for me.

But really, I like it for the sorted skills.

I'm a big fan of the More Purple, More Better sheet. You can find an earlier version online for free (most recent ones require patreon support) but it allows for you to generate your own content, and a support base has added stuff like the Planeshift races, etc. which can be added easily. It has autofill, meaning players can easily add all their class/background features without having to spend ages typing.

I'm a big fan of the More Purple, More Better sheet.

Our group has entirely converted to MPMB, except for one guy who has five pages of disorganized handwritten notes in lieu of a charsheet. Don't be that guy. Get MPMB.

Any group loot found is tracked in excel. It lists
Item
Item description, including known magical abilities
magical yes/know
who is carrying it (until determine who to give to)
who it was given to
quantity
gold value (for gems)

Any items given or used is moved to a 2nd tab. This keeps the primary tab short. The 2nd tab is for historical "didn't we have potion of fire resistance? who has it"

I use the Equipment window to write down armor, and the things around the body.
For extended loot, usually carried in a Bag of Holding, I set apart 1-2 pages of my notebook. Either at the very start of the book, or at the end.

I haven't had so much in a BoH that it needed its own A4 sheet to keep track of everything.
