Act Three: Fire-Axe

Training has come to an end. And as promised, Adrastus holds a ceremony and banquet in celebration. For the Ceremony, he has two slaves come in. The slaves places himself in manacles, declares that he does this in service to Infernal Asmodeus of his own free will and understands the risks involved.

He then lies upon an altar and waits for the Cardinal. The Cardinal then summons a barbed devil. The devil stands at seven feet tall and has boney spines protruding from almost every inch of its body. It pounces on the slave lying on the altar and tears into its body. It gruesomely feasts on the man's liver before turning to the Cardinal.

Thorn holds up a silver athame (ritual knife). The devil offers its arm. Thorn then cuts the devil and collects its blood. The devil bows to Thorn, then to the party, and vanishes returning to Hell. Trak immediately wheels the altar out of the room while Trik tries cast magic to save the slaves life.

Thorn continues the ritual. With the blood of the Barbed Devil, he traces the holy symbol of Asmodeus on the forehead of Mira, Caleb, X, and Amber.

“Behold,” he proclaims, “The ninth and last of my knots. The Nessian Knot is forged!”

The banquet commences. There is plenty of mead and alcohol available. Slaves are available for . . . things. A variety of food is served including roast duck, beef rib tips, and red pepper hummus. This party is one of the few times the slaves have seemed to really enjoy themselves.

During the party Elise Zadaria mentions that the White Ravens were named the Cocytian Knot. The significance of the names and number of the knots becomes clear. There are 9 knots named after the 9 layers of Hell.

In the morning, the 9th knot learns that a ship arrived at the river dock behind the manor last night. There is a square sailed longship tied to the pier. It sits heavily in the water clearly laden with its cargo.

Thorn summons Elise Zadaria into the library. An hour later, he summons your group.

“My children,” he says in his inhuman resonant voice that he usually reserves for when he preaches, “The time for revelry is at an end and the Time for you to use your training and your first mission is now.

“The mission is war. You will bring war to Talingarde. You have two objectives. First, you will see a shipment of munitions delieved to a bugbear chieftain named Sakkarot Fire-Axe. He makes camp on the northern coast of Lake Tarik beyond the Watch Wall. With this shipment, the Fire-Axe will have enough resources to unite the barbarous goblinoid tribes of the north and light the fire of war.

“Sitting on the dock as we speak is the longship Frosthamar captained by Kargeld Odenkirk. Tomorrow when the ship is resupplied it will be your transport. The captain is a ruthless mercenary and not to be trusted. He knows nothing of the specifics of our mission and you should keep it that way. He knows he is smuggling cargo to the north beyond the Watch Wall. That is all he need know.

“Once the cargo is safely delivered, he will take you just south across the lake under cover of darkness and land you near the town of Aldencross. There our contract with Captain Odenkirk will be concluded.

“It is shame how greedy he has proven. I had hoped to let the captain serve me again but it seems he is too much of a liability. Kill him. Kill his crew. Burn his ship and leave no survivors. It is crucial that no one suspects our involvement and that loose ends are taken care of. Be sure to reclaim the coin I gave him. Best not to be wasteful.

“That done, you will begin your second task. We will do more still to aid our ally the Fire-axe. The bugbears are mighty warriors but poor siege engineers. You will infiltrate the tower Balentyne, keystone of the Watch Wall, kill its commander and open the gate for Sakkarot’s horde.

“Once the shaggy monstrosities pierce the Watch Wall, the bugbears will pillage and lay waste to the townships of the north and the local garrisons will have no choice but to meet the Fire-Axe in the open field. Sakkarot is the most brilliant, gifted and murderous bugbear of his generation. I expect these battles will go poorly for the knights and yeoman of fair Talingarde.

“Do all of this and then when your task is done, break this clay seal.” He hands them a delicately carved clay seal adorned with a tangled knot of thorns surrounding the holy symbol of Asmodeus. “I will have more instructions then. Succeed and I will see you rewarded handsomely. Fail or betray me and you will pray for the comfort of Hell before I am done with you.

“The mission you start upon today is a holy mission. The people of Talingarde think they have seen the last of the mighty Asmodeus. Soon enough we will remind them that there is no escaping the grasp of Hell. Let us toast our success.”

He pours four goblets of deep red wine and one for himself. He raises the glass and offers a toast “To War!”

"To war!". Caleb drinks deeply.

The next morning, Caleb is up early. He looks like a simple laborer, and is helping the sailors load and secure the last of the provisions. The last thing he carries on board is his heavy knapsack, balanced on his stout walking staff.

The Half Orc watches keenly as the Cardinal performs the various rites of celebration and consecration. In particular, he is enthralled by the brutality of the barbed devil's feast. He almost misses the collection of profane blood, so focused he is on the slave's willing agony. As the altar is quickly removed, he wonders if the slave will survive, and wonders further whether the slave should survive. The question is forced from his mind as Thorn approaches with the devil's blood. As the freshly-applied unholy symbol drips crimson blood down his forehead and into his face, the sorcerer raises a finger to collect a drop and licks it off. The semi-familiar metallic taste bears odd traces- no doubt a result of its demonic nature. He smiles at Thorn's simple benediction, nodding his head in a small but significant gesture of subordination.

The mead flows freely. Though X tends to favor the heavier drinks, he makes no attempt to rebuff the occasional chalice of sweeter stuff thrust towards him. He revels in carnal abandon, gleefully consuming the rarest cuts of meat, a wide variety of intoxicants, and taking to his whims a multitude of slaves with no regard for their gender or desires. Many of them enjoy the rough Half-Orc's attentions, but it is of no concern to him when they don't. Onlookers might note that the behavior is more reminiscent of animalistic dominance than sensualism. He carries on late into the night, wantonly sating the most brutish of his desires.
In the morning, his Orcish heritage and fortitude are on full display, as he shows none of the typical aftereffects of excessive drinking or lack of sleep. Instead, he seems simply invigorated by the last night's revelry and the anticipation of violence. Each word from Thorn's lips draws more and more of the sorcerer's attention; by the end he's so excited he's slightly salivating at the thought. In particular, the command to slaughter the mercenary captain and crew brings a feverish spark to his eyes. By the time the cardinal's commands come to an end, he is near frantic with enthusiasm. He eagerly grips the goblet before himself, and raises it high.

"To WAR!" he bellows, echoing their patron and Caleb's words. It takes only a few seconds for him to drain the chalice.

During the past months, Amber has grown more confident and clearly more at ease with her fiendish heritage. She shows off her horns, not hiding or disguising them. Her orange eyes have turned full amber, capable of radiating with an inner fire. She asks quite a lot of questions, a natural curiosity come to the forefront that had once had to be hidden constantly. She tries to figure out the Asmodeus faith, but even af this time, she still has questions. The display with the afterlife certainly answered a big one for her, as she's definitely set on following the Asmodeus religion and has attended prayers led by Caleb.

During the ritual, Amber especially seems to look at the spiked devil, wondering about its fiendish nature. At the celebration, Amber wears an elegant red dress, showing off her female charmes. Yet she does not indulge in the pleasures of the flesh, though certainly enjoys the food with grace. She especially seems to favour spicy and hot food, as well as the occassional expensive drink. She enjoys the celebration, but does not indulge in it, preferring to keep a refined appearance.

In the morning, Amber carefully listens to Cardinal Thorn. At first her eyes widen as she learns what the intent of their mission is, but then a wicked smile appears. "To War!" She echoes the others as she holds up her goblet. Drinking the wine, she looks forward to the adventures to come.

Note: New Map and new image for Grumblejack!

The Frosthamar is a single-masted knarr with a square sail. (Real world similarity to a Viking Longship, but wider and a deeper hull suited to carrying cargo. Its Captain stands by the ship while provisions are loaded. He is a grizzled Norspik man from the lands far to the Northeast of Talingarde. The foriegner sports a wiry beard, pale blonde hair and a number of scars: Kargeld Odenkirk. His crew consists of a half dozen grim sailors who speak little of the common Talirean tongue. Caleb struggles at first to assist them in letting him help load the ship, but once his offer is understood, the crew allow him to carry the heavier ends of the boxes. But they insist that they strap down the cargo using precise nautical knots to ensure an even load.

He sizes up the Nessian Knot and decides X must be the leader. Caleb is doing manual labor, so he can't be a leader. Grumblejack looks scared at the sight of the ship, so he can't be the leader. The rest are women and Odenkirk is an uncivilized pig.

“You will Guard our boat all the way North, yes?” he asks the half-orc.

The Half-Orc meets Odenkirk's sneer with one of his own, a wicked facsimile of a smile. He gazes out from under the hood, smirking at Caleb's perhaps unintentional farce. Turning back to the captain, he allows a crackle of sparks to leap between his fingers. Without shirking from the apparent role of leader, his sneer widens to show teeth- failing to make the smile look any more pleasant. His hand clenches, extinguishing the sparks. "Yes. We will."

His eyes rise to the skies, taking in the grim, overcast skies with an air of contentedness. He takes a deep breath of the chill air. "Perhaps we'll even get to kill someone," he growls with a chuckle. Turning away, the Half-Orc takes to looking about the knaar, leaving the mercenary captain to wonder whether or not he's joking.

So several questions.
1: I took some liberties regarding the weather. If need be, I'll edit. Just let me know.
2: I assume the captain and crew are all visibly armed? a- how are they armed? b- are they armored? c- how many crew members are there?
3: The captain knows of both legs of the journey, right (though not the purpose thereof)? To the bugbears and then back to Aldencross?

RE:1 The scene does not call for any particular weather type. So it is fine. I view players and PCs as co-workers within telling the story. I think it is a nice aversion to the it's always sunny and clear unless drama demands otherwise trope.
RE:2 Captain Odenkirk carries a greataxe and a throwing axe. The 6 crewmen carry short swords and short bows. The Captain wears hide armor. The crew studded leather and bucklers.
RE:3 Yes the Captain knows that he is to deliver you to a camp in the North and then to Aldencross.

Odenkirk grunts his assent to X. “Then I will take you the cursed north past hope and life.” His small talk completed, he boards and waits impatiently for everyone to get on board.

Grumblejack pauses and looks at the boat suspiciously. “Grumblejack never been on boat before.” He stops at the gangplank and seems unwilling to take another step.

Amber is dressed in practical travelling clothes and she looks at the boat. Carrying with her, she has a lute and amidst her horns an iron circlet is set. Letting the half-orc deal with the captain, she turns towards Grumblejack. "You've been on a boat before, Grumblejack. Remember the swan boat?" Speaking with a smile, she gently motions Grumblejack to move onward towards the boat the gangplank.

“But that was magicky boat. Magicky boat unnatural and not obey natural law. Tiny feather turn into boat of course is safe. It light like feather. Feather floats. This natural boat and it obey natural law! Heavy things sink. This boat heavy! It sink if problem! Grumblejack heavy! He sink if problem! Grumblejack looks back to the manor house. Tiadora stands in the doorway watching.

This gives Grumblejack an epiphany. “If Grumblejack not get on boat, Grumblejack has to stay in manor with Scary-lady and miss out on all the merry murder ahead, yes? Then heavy boat not so bad.” The ogre quickly boards the Frosthamar. He staggers for a bit as his movements rock the boat, but he quickly scoots to the middle and stays near the mast.

Note: After the three months of training, Grumblejack has settled on nicknames for everyone.
Cardinal Thorn – Big Red Bird (Giant is Grumblejack's native language. This is a translation issue. But Thorn understands the ogre's meaning and takes it complimentary.)
Tiadora – Scary-Lady (He is genuinely scared of her.)
Amber – Pretty-Lady (She has horns. He has horns. Therefore she's pretty, like Grumblejack.)
Mira – Knight-Lady (He respects Mira as a combatant. And takes orders from her in battle.)
Irene – Tasty-un (Despite his intention to eat her back in the prison, Grumblejack has sort of adopted her as a little sister. But he keeps his original nickname for her.)
Caleb – Priesty-Lord (He respects Caleb as a religious figure)
X – Fire-Blade (He struggles for a name, but decides to dub X based on his two main forms of attack.)

Mira drinks the night away, enjoying herself, though she does not shout 'to war' like the others, instead laughing and replying in a good-natured but mocking tone, "None of you even know what war is like! I'd wager I've seen every single fight you've ever been in."

The next morning, Mira is in her armor, blade and shield crossed on her back, and helm carried under her arm. She glares at Odenkirk as he defers to X, but says nothing, instead opting to avoid open conflict and simply sits, making a space for Irene next to her.

At Mira's comment at the night and their shout, Amber comments with a smile. "I'm sure we'll find out then!"

Happy to see Grumblejack board the boat, Amber still ponders about what he said. She'd assumed the swam boat obeyed natural law and the only thing was its creation, so this was certainly a different perspective. Not that it needed further examination as Grumblejack had in the mean time got on the boat. Amber followed him on and tried to offer some helpful advice. "If there's a problem, try to grab something wooden which is not sinking as wood tends to float on the water."

The Half-Orc bears a faint smirk of amusement at the setup of the small craft. Only a half-dozen crew, each sparsely armored. This will be a fun prize, though he doesn't expect much fight out of any of them but the captain. With an appraising glare, he sizes up the man delivering them northward, and decides that he will have to die last. It might be difficult for him to watch the wanton slaughter of his crew. Perhaps he'll even beg for his miserable life. The Half-Orc smiles.

As Grumblejack cautiously embarks, the sorcerer follows the brute's gaze to the manor house. He narrows his eyes as he notices Tiadora, remembering once more the now phantom bruises that marred his back, shoulders, and arms under her tutelage. For what surely won't be the last time, he finds himself wondering exactly what the woman is. No Human could so easily best him, and so many times. He offers her a grim salute, before returning back to his business of settling in.

Sorry, one more question. How long do we expect the trip north to take?

For the record, it is now November 1st.
RE to farmer's question of how long the trip will take: Without any training in sailing or experience with travel by boat, the best guess anyone in the group can come up with is about 2 to three weeks.

The Frosthamar makes way from the river dock of Tiadora's manor. It takes a whole day to sail down the river and make it to the open sea. The heavy weight of the cargo means the hull scraps the bottom at times and the ship gets stuck a few times. Once in the ocean, the waters are calm and peaceful. Even Grumblejack manages to find his sea legs.

The Frosthamar is not a ship that caters to delicate sensibilities. Not even the Captain has a cabin. While Irene has brought a chamber pot along for the group, The crew simply relieve themselves over the railing. Sleep is done on deck or in the small gaps in between cargo in the hold.

Captain Odinkirk stays close to the coast. You can see farming communities and fishing villages go by. Cheerful fishermen wave at the Frosthamar and call Mitran blessings. Kargeld fakes a smile and waves back. “Wouldn't want'em to get suspicious, eh” he says with a scowl.

Grumblejack notices that the ship has oars for 8 rowers, but only six crew. He also finds that he can reach the oars from his seat in the back. One day he starts to mimic the crew and adds his strength to the ship's speed.

So . . . what do your character do while on this part of the journey?

The Half-Orc spends most of the days anxiously prowling about on the ship's deck. Kargeld's false smile and feigned neighborly attitude elicit an amused chuckle and a wry, almost begrudging one-handed quasi-salute to the rabble on the distant shore. Once or twice, he draws his blade to go through the motions of various forms, only to find the space unsuitable. As the days pass, his attitude grows more and more dour. He grunts and shoulders his way past sailors irritably, casting unfriendly glares at the various crewmates often without any provocation whatsoever.

Amber tries really hard to ignore their primitive environment. With few luxuries, it's a huge difference from the pleasantry offered by the Cardinal, even if the training was harsh. In general, Amber tries to distract herself by looking at the land they are moving past, enjoying the sight and curiously looking at the people. She also keeps herself busy with some tailoring she brought along, but in general she looks downright uncomfortable at the lack of privacy and poor facilities. She sticks to herself more and more, except for the idle banter she tries to strike with Mira. It ranges from the sight they are passing by, the people, the sea, complaining about their situation, to asking more about Mira and what she likes. She is trying to strike up a friendship in their travel time with Mira, inspired by the earlier mention from the half-orc about her chances to become Mira's friend.

--The Frosthamar sails North. Even with Grumblejack adding his strength to the oars, the ship is still slow and heavily laden. Knowing the average distance between villages (5 miles) and the number of towns you pass on the coast (9-11 a day) you figure you are traveling just under 50 miles a day give or take. This is much slower than the other ships that pass you. It takes a week for the ship to pass the harbor of the great city of Daveryn. The largest center of civilization along the eastern coast. Captain Kargeld shakes his head. "We'll not be stoppin thar. This is no pleasure cruise and I won't get our cargo within a mile of any Talirean 'arbormaster."

As you go further and further north, the seas get choppier and the wind gets colder.

Everyone please give me a perception check. I will roll for Kargeld Odenkirk and Grumblejack.

Where you are on the map: Lake Tarik has a river flowing East. That river has 3 white dots. Those dots represent three of the fortresses of the Watch Wall. You are approaching the white dot on the coast.

As the Frosthamar approaches the Watch Wall, the seas grow dangerous. The waves get white caps and rougher.

Mira is the first to see it, followed by the Captain, then Caleb: a blue sail bobbing up and down against the blue waters. It is a small patrol ship. And it is on an intercept course.

Kargeld grimly states the situation. "She's seen us, sure as damnation. There's no outrunning her loaded like the Frosthamar is. They look at our cargo, they'll know us for exactly what we are - weapon smuggles."

Because Mira and Caleb passed the DC, you have ten minutes to make preparations and plan.

"But it's going to be a lot easier if they think they're about to confiscate some contraband and arrest the captain. So let's stay disguised until it's time to go. Big Guy, we're gonna put a rope around your neck, ok? Not tied to anything. It's just a trick to make the soldiers think you're not dangerous. That's gonna be fun, right?"".

So it looks like the current plan is for Caleb and Amber plan to disguise themselves as Sergeant Random and Sir Balin respectively while the rest prepare to destroy the others in a surprise attack should it go south. Grumblejack will be disguised to look harmless. To this end, Grumblejack has upgraded his armor to hide armor and specifically purchased a helmet to hide his ogreness. Of course he is still 10 feet tall and 600+ pounds.

Mira, with her 19 perception check and her military background allows her to see and understand the actions of the other boat. First as the boat approaches, she is able to identify a total of 13 people on board. Second she is able to identify the name of the boat "The Blade of St. Martius." The Half Orc growls and grins. "If you go over, you should expect me to come to. ...and you might want to leave the armor behind, cinders don't float." He listens quietly as the plan of deception is hatched. He turns to Amber with a smirk. "You and I should do the talking. Master Dunnam can't spin a good lie to save his life."

As the blue sail creeps closer, the canny observer notices the Half Orc's appearance changing to fit in with his allies and their suggestions. To anyone who wasn't watching closely, the sorcerer simply disappears. He takes up a position near the rail, content for the moment to let the false Mitran insignia on his cloak announce his person.

The Ship approaches swiftly The name is painted on the bow "The Blade of St. Martius." The Blade is smaller than the "Frosthamar." It is a single masted pinnace. The sailors begin shouting "Heave to in the name of the King!"

Captail Kargeld orders his men to comply, slowing the ship and awaiting the approach.

The Captain of the Blade sees Amber disguised as Balin. He positions the Blade's bow by the Frosthamar's bow. "Hail Sir Balin! he calls, "I am Captain Edward Sambyrl. What brings you this far North?"

Disguised in the spitting image of Sir Balin, Amber greets the captain. "Hail Captain Edward Sambyrl, good to see you. A mission of the Church brings me along these currents. I have been tasked to brighten Mitra's radiance in the North. How's your duty going?" Sir Balin poses with extreme confidence and looks the captain in the eyes with a straight look while Amber underneath the illusionary veil simply hopes she is coming across believable.

The Half Orc disguised as Sir Balin's subordinate nods in acknowledgement when the Captain of the Blade turns his gaze to survey the Frosthamar. He says nothing, instead using his stance and behavior to grant credence to Balin's presence. His posture is relaxed, confident- blade easily within arm's reach, but not eager or anxious to retrieve it.

The Captain nods "Oh! Quite dull Sir Balin. The last pirates er, deserter we caught were likely hanged at Branderscar or burnt in the fire. Horrible accident that prison held much history. But you, on a mission to spread Mitra's light." He says eyeing the heavy laded ship and the military looking passengers. "Now is a good time to do that. The Bugbears have been quiet for a few months. I suspect now is the time to establish a foothold in the Savage North.

Captain Sambyrl turns to his crew. "We did not see this boat here. So make no note of it in our logs."

"Let's hope the prison will be quickly rebuild, so you can continue to send pirates and deserters to proper justice. I can hear you have a good insight in Mitra's goals north." Sir Balin looks over the Captain and nods in approval. "I wish you good luck in your duty, Captain Sambyrl. May Mitra's Justice ever prevail on these waters and elsewhere." The next encounter occurs shortly after sunrise on November 13th. Roll perception with a -2 penalty as the attack is coming from the East and the Sun is providing . . . distraction? Cover? I'm not not sure what the right word for it is. Point is you're looking into the light.

Officially, slavery is illegal in Talingarde. But an argument could be made that classism, nationalistic Chauvinism, and religious prejudices have created a society wherein people like Grumblejack, Amber and X are forever trapped in the lowest levels of society; likely they would be in debt financially or socially to others in some way, and through that debt, slaves. Of the three, Amber's best option was for her mother to raise her in a convent of Mitran Nuns. Amber would have been raised to be a nun and then become a minor celebrity as the token tiefling worshiper of Mitra. But that is as far as she would ever be able to progress and only at the mercy of the nuns.

Surprise Round

Five Water Elementals have pulled themselves onto the Frosthamar, But Caleb was ready for them. He strikes at the nearest with his spear. Odd that stabbing water with a spear damages it, but it works and water splashes out of the wound.

Start of Round 1

A dolphine (White border) Swims closer to the boat and dives waiting (but for what?)

X casts mage armor on himself.

Caleb casts his magic and stabs at the same water elemental. The thrust isn't as strong as the tip fails to puncture the membrane of water that is the creature's skin.

From the Eastern waters, The Triton Warriors fire coral-tipped bolts from their heavy crossbows. And they fire at the Sailors on the Starboard side. Fortunately the gunwale gives partial cover to the sailors.
[roll0] The bolt slams into the gunwale.
[roll1]
[roll2] The bolt strikes the midshipman
[roll3]
[roll4] The bolt strikes the aft rower.
[roll5]

On board, the midship sailors react. Picking up their short bows, The port midshipman (Sailor Gray) )looses an arrow at the Water elemental at the bow of the ship. He's not trying to save Amber necessarily, but the purple outlined water elemental gives him the clearest shot. The Starboard midshipman (Sailor Salmon) was next to Caleb, so he twists and looses an arrow at the Water elemental Caleb attacked.

[roll6] His aim is true and water bursts out of the elemental.
[roll7]
[roll8] As Caleb's second spear thrust, the arrow does not pierce the elemental's skin. Perhaps being struck by Aquatta's bolt messed up his aim.
[roll9]

Mira may take her action.

Angry at being surprised like this and not knowing what the hell is going on, she likes the fact that the water elemental is so close to her even less. [roll15] His first act is to lay on the deck praying thanks to whatever God he worships.

[roll16] Irene hefts the net into the water. She's actually surprised as her toss is perfect and the Triton warrior is caught and entangled.

I should have mentioned this last post, but Mira delays her standard action. She then helps Irene attempt to drag Triton Ariel(?) aboard.

Amber, glad to no longer be next to a water elemental, rushes over to the side she hopes she will be able to most contribute. She moves to the side with the dolphins and triton warriors, standing at the edge of the ship. Taking a deep breath as she raises her hands, her arms tense as she calls forth arcane energy and speaks words that sear from her mouth, fuelling the fires that are unleashed from her hands, washing over the waters. Amber isn't sure if it will work, but no time like the present to try.

The ship levels out as more people move to the Starboard side.

Mira tries to pull the Triton Warrior on board, but the creature is heavy and Mira has an indirect angle (or something physics related.) Which is bad news for Ariel as she is still in the area of effect of Amber's attack. The net is designed to be used by a large creature like Grumblejack, So it is made of a wire mesh to withstand his stronger pull. (Net isn't burning.)

"Yine hofto roa t udder est Yone flounder! ASK youelf!"

Sailor Olive tries to climb aboard.
[roll5] He flounders. He doesn't save himself.

Sailor White is unconscious in the cold water. He was pushed down by the dolphins and Tritons he sinks further into the cold and the black.

Water Elemental Purple knows it should attack those that are evil and those that attack it. Water Red attacked it. In the absence of Sailor Black to attack, it attacks Water Red.
[roll6] Water slaps water. but no damage is done.
[roll7]

The Lead Triton raises his Trident which has a holy symbol of Mitra tied to it. (Made not of Sapphire and Silver, but of Seashells and Coral.) He cries loudly casting a spell.

Another Water elemental (Gold) appears on deck.[roll8]

Grumblejack immediately attacks it.
[roll9]
[roll10] Water Elemental Gold appears midship by the mast. Every one is alerted to its present when Grumblejack's Club smashes down on it splashing water out of its body. It isn't dead, but it looks like it should be bleeding and bruised.

X swings at the red-headed triton. And misses.

Dolphin Blue – It charges and slam attacks Sailor Olive by diving under the ship.
[roll0] It's a crit!
[roll1] Confirmed for 6 damage

Sailor Brown – attacks the Lead Triton with his bow.
[roll2] the Arrow bounces off its Seashell armor (Where did he find clamshells that big?)
[roll3]

Sailor White – His life has been ended by mermaids :smallfrown:

Elemental Red – continues attacking his fellow Elemental
[roll4] It is a battle of water slapping against water. But nothing additional splashes out of the Purple Elemental.
[roll5]

Sailor Black takes a moment to catch his breath before arming himself with his bow and arrows.

Irene pulls out a set of manacles and clamps them on Ariel. She is now helpless as well as prone and entangled.

Mira's Action goes here.

Amber yelps as she's hit. She repositions and casts her fire again on her enemies.
[roll6] Somehow Ariel manages to not be seared severely by the fire and flames. Let's say it is because her hair is wet.
Elemental Gold boils and evaporates. (half damage alone is enough to kill it.) It dies before it can even do anything.

Mira may post her action.

I wish to speak to our prisoner once this battle is over. I'm sure you can find some other way to entertain yourself in the meantime." With that, she scans the water, noting the triton that summoned the elemental and points, shouting, "That one! Kill her!" as she searches for a bow and arrows herself, looking to be able to combat the creatures at sea.

Captain Odenkirk grabs the rudder and begins to slowly turn the ship the starboard (east). (This has the effect of shifting everyone in the water 1 square to the southwest relative to the ship on the map.)

The Purple Water element continues to defend itself from Water Red.
[roll0] It's not very effective

The Triton Oracle Nerianus Casts again and another water elemental appears on deck. This time it appears just to the side of Captain Odenkirk.
[roll1] Continuing the trend, the water elemental does not adjust to appearing on a boat instead of water

Sailor Olive attempts yet again to climb aboard.

We reach the end of the round with Grumblejack, seeing poor sailor Olive floundering like an disabled flounder, reaching out his massive hand to grab the dumb sailor that cant catch a rope, or climb aboard a ship.

The Purple Water element continues to defend itself from Water Red.

[roll1] The Red Water elemental is ripped in half as its water is scattered and lost to the sea.

Captain Odenkirk pulls on the sheetline while maintaining his grip on the rudder. As the ship turns it switches from Beam reach to a Broad reach. Which means, for the non-sailors, that the sail is catching more wind and the ship is now going faster

Sailor Olive, glad to be on board immediately ties a rope about his waist so he can't get thrown off again.

The Triton Leader takes a moment as casts a spell. The water around him crests into a small wave. (+20 feet to his Swim speed.)

Silver Water Elemental uses a spell like ability. Water begins spraying everywhere on the deck. It appears to come from the Elemental, but this half of the deck is easily drenched. Caleb gets his AoO now and stabs the Elemental. It bursts under the spear, destroyed, yet the spray continues to soak the deck and drip below. The sailors notice and gape in horror. They cry in their Native language. “Nadirine!”

Grumblejack finishes the round by mimicking Irene and using an oar as a great club to smash the Triton leader.

Amber lobs an orb of acid at the Oracle. Without the sea, she finds the Triton easier to hit. The acid strikes a non-covered spot on his armor. He shifts his focus away from the Captain and turns to Mira and Amber. (This is flavor text. Being in water didn't give him any game mechanics advantage. She just had a series of bad roles that I am justifying.)

The Sailor's arrows strike well this time. The dolphins are dead. The Triton warriors can only chase after the Frosthammar, but they cannot catchup.

The Orcale speaks as he approaches Mira. ”I am Nerianus, Oracle of Mitra. You are the coming great evil I have seen in my dreams. The Shining Sun has seen the wickedness you hide in your hearts. And thus it will be the Son who brings your doom!” The Oracle raises his trident and . . . :( your antagonist ran into a problem and needs to reset.
the problem
Miras's antagonize feat requires that Nerianus attack her with his next action.
Caleb's Murderous Command Spell requires that he attack or move closer to his closest ally (Unconscious Ariel) with his next action
He cannot do both.

the Solution
I have decided that for his standard action the two desires to attack negates each other and he wastes his standard action doing nothing. (I interpret this as good for the party.) Otherwise he would have either used his standard action for a double move or attacked Mira (possibly damaging her).

His eyes glaze over as the spell controls his mind. Ariel got captured. She has to die lest she be tortured for information. It would be a mercy.

He hops, slowed by his flipper shaped feet. He side steps Mira, X, and finds himself in range of Caleb's spear.

Attack of Opportunities for Mira, X, Caleb, and Captain Odenkirk.

As the Triton leaves himself exposed, the Sorcerer lashes out again with the blade, hopping to take him unawares.

Then, another wordless snarl erupts from the Half-Orc's bared teeth. He pulls his blade back, stunned by the Triton's inexplicably durable armor, and cries out, "Die, already!" He lets his sword hand lower to the side and raises a fist, glowing amber. He opens the fist, unleashing a blast of flame into the Triton, scorching the exposed wood and flesh of his companions in a reckless, furious outburst.

Ariel knows she is not going to be set free. So she repeats the phrase she was instructed by the Oracle should she be captured. “Air gulper. It will be the Sun who brings your doom.”

Loot - time
The elementals carried nothing.
The Dolphins carried nothing but their bodies fell behind as the ship pulled away anyways.
Ariel carried on her a heavy crossbow, a quiver with 7 bolts remaining, a masterwork trident, and an odd bracelet made of beads with raised symbols (Braille Bracelet).
Nerianus carried on him a +1 trident, a seashell and pearl holy symbol of Mitra (worth 100gp) and that damned Seashell armor (uses the stats of a bone breastplate; fragile shatters on a confirmed critical hit). He also has a Braille Bracelet.

This bracelet contains 10 small clay beads, each carved with a raised symbol. The beads can be removed from the bracelet cord and rearranged in any order. Once arranged, the carvings can be felt with the fingers to determine the symbols’ meaning and decipher any message the bracelet is meant to convey. A single bead could impart a simple message, or multiple beads can be strung together to form more complicated messages. Interpreting the beads allows individuals to communicate in absolute silence, even in complete darkness or otherwise unable to see. To use the beads properly, you and your allies must assign each bead a meaning prior to using the bracelet in this way. Recalling the meaning of a single bead requires a successful DC 10 Intelligence check. Conveying more complicated messages increases this check by 2 for each additional bead used. Deciphering the message is practically impossible for a creature that doesn’t know the meanings assigned to the beads, increasing the DC by 20.

Coughing a few times, Amber then takes a deep breath as she is reinvigorated by the magic. "Thanks, Caleb." She nods to him before he is off to the others.

Amber moves up to Mira and places a hand on the arm holding the blade towards Ariel, gently trying to nudge it away. "No need for weapons towards our new guest." Amber speaks gently and softly. She then kneels besides Ariel and gives her a warm and kind smile. "Have no fear, you're now our guest. I'll make sure we treat you better than the welcoming party we just met. I'm Amber. Please tell me, what is your name?" With a welcoming and open demeanour she tries to get Ariel to open up.

"I'm sure you understand why we need to keep you in there for the moment, as our initial meeting hasn't been exactly the friendliest. Let's turn that around and see how we can help each other and get to know each other a bit better, alright? Please tell me, why were you attacking us?"

While Amber is trying to get Ariel to be friendly, she hopes the others take the hint not to threaten her further. While she speaks of cooperating and tries to come over as a friendly person, she's lying as she's well aware the others won't have the friendliest plans for her. Yet, perhaps her diplomatic skill may win her true, at least to the point that she has Ariel enough at ease to not feel too threatened, after which she casts Charm Person to get Ariel to tell what was up with the attack and what they might expect in the future from the others.

Ariel is hesitant, expecting to be attacked after lulled into a false sense of security. All that she knows about devil worshipers says they do not show mercy. Perhaps this offer is the most effective argument against the propaganda she's been fed. Eventually she nervously flops over to the edge and slips into the water.

“Pity,” Captain Odenkirk says, “Triton's good eating. It's got the flavor of pork, yet the texture of fish..

As discussed previously with Caleb and X, Odenkirk sails to Seal Island. There are plentiful seals sunning on the rocks. They bark at each other, they bark at the Frosthammar, they bark at the waves. For as cute as they look, the seals are rather irritating. An unmanned pier juts out into a natural harbor. On the shore are two seal hunting/fishing boats. “The equipment is officially placed there for marooned and shipwrecked sailors.” The captain explains tying the boat to the dock. “Unofficially they are communal property among those who know of this habor. Best not break them.”

The seal here are of fine quality. And Amber is also able to see that all the proper tools she would need for making outfits of seal hide are counted among the communal property.

The crew begin unloading the barrels of elemental contaminated water. Likely they will also perform some funeral rites for their lost comrade, or at least divvy up his belongings.

“So,” the captain grunts happily, “Who's up for some seal hunting?”

Here's how Seal hunting works

There's two boats. Each boat has a hunt leader who makes a Survival Check. DC15 and the boat catches a seal. Its pelt is worth 50 gp. For every 3 past 15 the boat catches another seal.
Everyone else on the boat may attempt to aid. This is a Survival DC 10 roll. Beat 10 and the hunt leader gets a +2 bonus. Fail, and instead impose a -2 penalty.

Odenkirk will be the hunt leader of the first boat; he has +8 to survival. As Captain he claims the first seal pelt from his boat; though in the long run, what he claims doesn't matter . . .

There are dangers of course. Don't roll a one.

In the group, Caleb has a +4 to Survival, Grumblejack has a +4, and Amber has the third highest with a +0.

And so the first day of seal hunting ends.
Captain Odenkirk has failed as hunter and as a man. His boat has caught no seals. True Caleb didn't help and got in the way, Sailor Black as able to cover while Caleb learned. This clearly lands on Odenkirk. Not that he admits it. Caleb was the sole cause of the unsuccessful hunt in his eyes.

Grumblejack's team returns with two seals for Amber. Grumblejack suggests making boots for the sailors who helped him. (cause the boots are unlikely to be damaged when time comes to backstab them.)

X notes that Sailors Oliver and Brown did nothing for preparations for Sailor White.

"Good call!" Amber states with a smile and a wink towards Grumblejack. She takes the seals and looks at Mira for help to skin them. She'll start working on the boots, looking at the work of the others.

Craft (clothing): Take 10, result 18. Assuming DC 10 for boots: 18 * 10 = 180 sp = 18 gp. For a day's work, divide by 7: 2,57gp progress of ???

Working through the evening and part of the night, Amber is able to craft the boots and has enough hide and fur left over to add fur trim to the collars of everyone's neck line. A nice addition as it has been getting colder.

Day two of seal hunting

Despite blaming Caleb for the failure of the last hunt, Caleb is invited to join the Captain again. The Captain is prideful. As long as he has someone he can blame for a poor hunt, he never has to take responsibility for failure.

On board the first boat, it is not Caleb who is the cause of the problems on the boat today. It is Sailor Black lacking off. But Odenkirk does not acknowledge this. The hunt should have returned with two seals. One just barely got away. So they return with one seal, which Odenkirk claims as his own. He keeps the hide, planning on selling it.

On the second boat, Grumblejack has bested Captain Odenkirk again. Rather Sailor Grey takes over as hunt leader without Grumblejack noticing. They return with 5 seals. (Grumblejack suggests making a pair of boots for Odenkirk, but he whispers make them a little large so I can wear them.

But before the hunting boats return, Amber spots a group of small ships around Noon. There's 4 boats total: 3 one man kayaks and 1 umiak.
(knowing that we have an international group here. It is possible you may not know what a kayak is. link here (https://www.traditionalkayaks.com/Kayakreplicas/KNK1215.html). Likewise for a umiak. (https://www.historymuseum.ca/cmc/exhibitions/aborig/watercraft/wau03eng.html)

They are heading straight for the dock on Seal Island.

When she spots the boats, she is quick to call out. "Mira! Nameless!" The latter obviously intending to hail the half-orc sorcerer. "There's ships coming, over there! Four boats of which three are rowboats!" She points in the direction of the boats inbound for Seal Island. "I guess they want to make use of Seal island, but perhaps not? Any suggestions?"

For now, he'll let Mira do the talking, though he makes no effort to disguise himself (beyond than the hooded cowl he almost always wears). His eyes scan the newcomers curiously. Content to let someone else prey upon the seals- perhaps it will get them moving again faster, he's in no particular hurry to instigate violence, but perfectly happy to find a reason to change his mind. As such, he watches.

The umiak is rowed to the dock. There are 4 men on board. Two are dressed plainly. In hide armor Another stands in the middle, almost posing with a painted metal spear. He looks the youngest and His armor is decorated with bones and broken/carved walrus tusks. Behind him is an older man, still in hide armor, but decorated with paints and feathers.

The men in kayaks keep their distance, but they are still in range of the dock.

The young man in the middle shouts in a strange grutteral language. The man behind him translates.
“This is White Tusk of the Yutak. And I am his shaman Joseph Calls Fire from Water. White Tusk has had a successful hunting season and wish to trade with the metal-men of the South. What say you?”

Hunters from the Yutak lands wishing to trade. The men are likely more hunters than warriors.

Mira – you know that this hault should be valuable, but as far as you can tell you are looking at a fancy tooth collection. In the back of your mind you believe this is called Ivory and men kill animals for it.

Amber – You are not able to guess at what the tusks are worth, but surely an artist would pay good money for them to carve them? The narwhal horn however, That is exceptionally rare adding to its value. Narwhals are the unicorn of the sea! The horn is as magical as a unicorn's horn and over four times as long! It is long enough and durable enough to be used as a masterwork quarterstaff. As a magical material, enchanting it would be easier than enchanting a regular staff. (If enchanted as a magical staff, rod or wand, subtract its value from the creation cost of the magic item. Creating this item requires one day for each 1,500 gp of the base price (instead of the usual 1,000).

X – The narwhal horn is worth 2000gp. They have at least 2000gp of ivory in the walrus tusks.

Caleb – They have 2000gp worth of ivory in walrus tusks and the narwhal horn is worth 2000 gp. If you got an interested buyer, you could squeeze an extra 300gp because there are a few unblemished tusks that appear to be part of a paired set.

White Tusk turns to Joseph Calls-Fire-From-Water and points at Mira. They exchange a few words with the shaman seeming to argue. Finally the older man turns to make an offer.

“We seek to trade that which is rare in our lands. An outfit made of metal is rare indeed. White Tusk offers.” He swallows slightly nervous, “All of our walrus tusks in exchange for her outfit.” He pauses again. “And I apologize, he is a young man and rather stupid. He offers all of our walrus tusks in exchange for her outfit, provided her modesty is part of the bargain.”

And then with wisdom, the shaman steps away from his chief adding, "He has never met a red-headed metal-wearing woman before. He then raises his shield.

Meanwhile, Odenkirk has decided that this just became an acceptable distraction from hunting.

(Grumblejack and his group are out collecting seals.)

That night, the captain is dismissive of leaving in the morning. "It will take the rest of the night for the barrels to dry. Another day to reload them. We easily have another day for seal hunting. After all, I'm owed that as your priest messed up the first day, and we had the distraction today."

It does not take that long to dry and refill the water barrels, in fact, the barrels are already refilled and on board. He is determined get another day of hunting in.

Caleb has learned enough that Odenkirk's strength lies in focusing his rage and that the man is a barbarian in character of class and class of character.

An Intimidate roll of 20 or a Diplomacy roll of 15 will convince him to leave tommorrow.

The Half Orc watches with a curious expression as Mira approaches. Surely she knows the primitive fool is offering an outrageous price for simple armor? He eagerly awaits her words, but reads the expression just before she closes the distance. His curiosity shifts into amusement as he stands in the sand, watching his colleague all-but disembowel the young fool. As the primitive huntsmen flee, he chuckles quietly.

Back on board the Frosthamar, the cowled sorcerer watches from the railing as the crewmen load the barrels. He turns to the captain at the end of his comments and grunts. "You lie." He steps forward, rising to his full height, placing a hand on the grip of his blade as if he maybe, just maybe intends to use it. "The ship is prepared, and we've already wasted two days on this errand. We make for Lake Tarik at first light." Woo! I'm good at those!
[roll0] (+18, if this counts as "welding a 2-handed weapon")He turns away from the captain, and mutters over his shoulder with a chuckle, "besides, we have much coin in ivory to show for the delay."

The Half-Orc's face takes on an expression of almost manic glee. Only during the heat of battle as Caleb seen him bear such a fierce and joyful visage. He grips the tusk with both hands for a long moment, admiring the unusual, spiral-shaped tooth. He rests the butt end on the floor, and turns back to the cleric. He nods back in acknowledgement before turning away and marching off to a relatively secluded portion of the main deck.

Under the faint moonlight, he can be seen admiring his new prize late into the night.

Amber looks at the half-orc speaking to Odenkirk. While she is not convinced the ones who brought the tusks will be fast enough to be back tomorrow for a fight, thinking they hail from further away, even she, as she views the half-orc's display, finds his argument convincing enough to leave at first light.

When the half-orc desires the sea unicorn's horn, she looks in thought, as if trying to figure out what the purpose the half-orc will give to the horn given the possibilities.

We never did learn what would have happened if the seal hunters rolled a 1. Probably just as well.

More days pass. Ice chucks appear in the water. At night, the temperature drops below freezing. Ice rime appears on the rigging. The Sailors light torches for warms as well as light. It is miserable when the wind blows.

The ship turns east into a wide fjord shoving aside chunks of ice in the way. The ship is aptly named.
On the night after the Frosthammar finally makes its way into fresh waters, a new danger appears. While huddled around a torch, the crew hear a chill laugh from a top the mast.

The next morning, the Frosthamar sails up the River Taiga. Kargeld, more relaxed with less giants and fire onboard, demonstrates his skill nimbly sailing the heavy craft through fields of floating ice. He barks his orders in Norspik and his sailors comply. Again and again he turns the boat at the right moment to pass between the broken shards craved from ancient glaciers.

After a few hours of this, the dangerous headwaters of the Taiga's entrance change to the open water of a mighty and mostly uncharted forest river. It is a savage land you are now in. And the forest before you likely has no name in common.

The wind is with you and pushes the Frosthamar upstream. And after miles and miles of picturesque pine trees frosted with snow, the ship comes to a great mountain range. In violation of natural geological features, the river flows through a great rift in the mountains that looks as if some impossible huge primordial giant smashed a pass through the rocky slate.

You head south, though this does little to change the cold. The direction of the river reverses in the mountains and carries the Frosthamar along. And you reach the the great interior sea of Talingarde, the Great Lake Tarik. Across the lake, to the south, is the Watch Wall. On the northern banks in a wide wooded valley is your destination – the camp of Sakkarot Fire-Axe.

There is only one place to dock the boat – a crudely made pier jutting out into the river. You can see the camp from the river. Thousands of bugbears have assembled. Worse, there are more that just bugbears here. The occasional polar bear lumbers around the camp untended. Fur-clad goblins scamper here and there laughing with frentic glee. Even a few hill giants gather at the camp's fringes.

As Kargeld docks, four hulking bugbears stoll towards the ship with weapons drawn.

The Half-Orc paces the deck throughout Kargeld's skillful display. Though the ship is in good hand, the sorcerer is more than a little uneasy by the close proximity of so many potential icy graves. As the ship creeps towards her destination, he seems more and more jumpy, eager to be at their first destination.

The sight of so many ferocious warriors gathered in one place stirs him into an odd glee. The air is practically humming with pent up violence, as the ship is poled closer to the dock. From beneath his hooded cowl, the warrior looks on the gathered masses with an impressed frown. Though some part of him still regrets his relative inaction the night before, even he is forced to gaze upon the gathered army and swallow his pride.

He steps forward to meet the bugbears, leaving his falchion sheathed over his shoulder. Raising his arms in a gesture meant to be placating, he calls out loudly, "Easy, friends. We bring gifts for Sakkarot the Fire-Axe."

Gonna actually go for a diplomacy check here, though its untrained. Too bad that's not a skill for sorcs, guess it'd be too good with all the Cha floating around. [roll0]

Caleb steps up behind the Sorcerer. His longspear is pointe at the ground, but held ready. He lets his cloak fall open to show the glint of heavy armor beneath it. "Gotta show these tough guys that we're ready to throw down if they start sum'tin", he mutters under his breath.

Amber looks wide eyed at the gathering of so many bugbears. She's completely unused to such a sight and it shows. Noting the polar bears, the goblins and the hill giants, she draws in breath and moves a hand through her hair. Glancing between grumblejack and the gathering now in sight, they certainly share the lumbering gaid.

After the geographical feature she was impressed by on the journey, this meeting is another thing that leaves a sight to remember. Not knowing what to say in such company, also because if they are as skilled in the common tongue as some of the sailors here, the conversation may not go as she wishes. Happy to see the orc step forward and take up the conversation, Amber stands at the ready to interject if her social skills are needed, though she's not exactly experienced at the face of such a large group of bugbears.

While it may have been clever to use her disguise, she forgot to do so as she was thrown off guard at the sight of so many gathered bugbears, despite being warned ahead of time this would be what they encounter.

"What gifts you bring? Give gifts to us and we take to him." The lead bugbear says. The bugbears wear dirty leather armor that desperately needs cleaning. They carry primitive clubs apparently made from hacking off a tree limb and then wrapping the handle with rope for grip. The leader of the squad has a stone piece inset to the club for added weight.

Matching Caleb's tone, the Half-Orc mutters "These four don't worry me, but those giants?" He turns just far enough to peripherally note the cleric's expression with a smirk. "If you're not scared of them, you're even dumber than you look." He chuckles quietly as the Bugbears come to a halt.

Turning back to face their apparent hosts, the sorcerer nods at the speakers words. "Odenkirk!" he yells over a shoulder. "Have your men bring one of the crates, eh?" To the Bugbear he responds, "It will take more than you four, and I think you will find them much to your liking."

He draws his blade slowly over a shoulder- clearly more for show than action. "Those sticks and leathers won't be much help to tear down the wall." He waits a moment, to make sure he has the attention of all four Bugbears. He grips the blade and stares them down, rolling his shoulders both in a deliberate stretch and a clear display of comfort he doesn't feel and strength he very much does.

"You will lead us to your chieftain, for we also carry a message for him."

Gonna go ahead and intimidate the bugbears. He's better at that than diplomacy, anyway. XD

The lead bugbear sizes up the sorcerer and decides his small group would not be able to take him. "Make way for the Fire-Axe. he says, "His ship has arrived."

Within five minutes, a great black-furred bugbear carrying an orange great-axe that periodically erupts flame arrives on the pier. He points his axe at X. "WHO SENT YOU? Sakkarot demands in unaccented common. Thorn had briefed you on this. This is for show you would know. Sakkarot knows who sent you, but his horde does not. As Caleb shouts out the blessing of Asmodeus, his voice booms out the arcane words Amber lets out, weaving the spell Silent Image to bolster his announcement.

Above the cleric Caleb, five blood red dots flare up, set in equal distance apear. Like blood flowing, the red drips along lines to the other dots to create a foreboding pentagon.

The air around it is palpable with power as the light dims, just as does the air around Caleb itself. As Caleb intones "HE SENDS US!" his eyes flare a flaming red, as if he peering from Hell itself. The darkness rolls from the symbol in the air and along the ground from Caleb, pulsing with power.

The red star appears above. The gathered bugbears stare. Magic is a rare thing for them. Few have the wisdom for divine magic. Less have the intelligence for arcane magics. They begin with awe that turns to clapping. They are genuinely impressed as if watching a fireworks display. A chant in goblin begins.

Sakkarot Fire-Axe smiles a toothy grin, “They are Welcome here!” He boasts. “They are my guests and our Allies! I will deal with any who harms them.” He walks over to the boat and rips open one of the crates, revealing the finely made battleaxes within. He tosses one to the leader of the group that met you on the dock. “BEHOLD. They bring STEEL!” The chant gains a chorus of howls and cheers from the monstrous assemble.

The Frosthamar is unloaded. Sakkarot's lieutenants see that each case is distributed and a visible transformation occurs in the camp. Where once there were a thousand bugbear savages, now there are a thousand bugbear soldiers each armed with uniform axes and shields, all bearing the emblem of a firey axe. What a terror you have helped create. . .

“A FEAST!” Sakkarot calls. “To honor this shipment!”

Odenkirk and his men are less than excited. “We shall stay with the ship. Perhaps sail out into the river and set anchor for safety. . . I don't want my men to be snacks” he says.

A feast is held. The highlight of the party is when a great shaggy dire boar, captured from the northern woods, is dragged in by a dozen bugbears. Sakkarot beheads the wounded animal with his fire axe. One ton of pork in then spitted and roasted over a great open pit. You are given a place at Sakkarot's table, a front row seat to a spectacle of savagry.

In an instant, the Half-Orc is at home. As the sailors lay anchor in the middle of the river, he gleefully dives into the practicality of distributing blades and armor. More than a few punches are exchanged. Perhaps to the bewilderment of the crew's less-savage members, none of them seem particularly injurious, though the Half-Orc is severely bruised about the shoulders and a few of the Bugbears retain less teeth when they depart with their newly claimed blades.

As various game roasts over several open flames, the sorcerer prowls about the camp, eyes reflecting the fire they tend to linger upon. He comes across a small group testing their newfound blades, many using them ineffectively, unsure where to grip and tiring themselves out with inefficient swipes. With a cry, "No, that's all wrong!" he claims the attention of a few of them. Wrenching one of the battle-axes from a nearby Bugbear's misplaced hands and claps his chest loudly until all eyes settle on him- it seems some of them don't understand the common tongue, but for those that do... "Take the blade like this!" He grips the axe tightly- hands spread, with one near the base of the haft and another higher up to control it. He demonstrates, facing the fire, how this grip allows the wielder to both direct the weapon carefully and make use of its heavy head for delivering brutal blows. One stump- previously a seat- is nearly reduced to splinters as the axe-head plunges through it. The second blow makes it worthless, but effectively punctuates the demonstration. Thrusting the blade back into the hands of its owner, he gruffly nods before tossing the ruined seat into the fire. As they grip their blades, many of the Bugbears smile at the way it feels. It isn't a pleasant sight, but the Half-Orc responds in kind before stalking back to Sakkarot's table.

"Your army needs work," he grunts, by way of greeting. As the chieftain turns to respond unkindly, he breaks out into laughter. It fades shortly, but leaves the most genuine smile on the sorcerer's face that any of you have yet seen. "But they'll do. They learn quickly. The axe is a good tool."

Nodding slowly, he locks eyes with the Sakkarot. "The Mitrans won't know what hit them."

For the rest of the evening, he relaxes in the chieftain's presence. The drippings of half-cooked meat mingles freely with wine and fruit juices as he eats haphazardly, making a mess of virtually everything within arm's reach. Several hours later, he turns to Sakkarot again. "Tell me, chieftain, how do you control the bears? And how are there Giants that heed your call?"

Sakkarot gulps from his tankard. “The hill giants come because a fight is coming and they want to fight. The bears have similar reasons I am told. I don't speak their language, though they call themselves Naatanuks. The Mitrans believe rumors that Bugbears ride these beasts into battle. We don't. But I see no reason to correct the Mitrans.”

At this moment, a fight erupts from another table. A female Ogre, with a bone piercing her nose, has started the fight by stabbing a male Ogre with a spear. The pair is wrestling on the ground now as other ogres and bugbears encourage their fight. As the male gets the upper hand, and a few bruises, the female breaks free and runs off. The male ogre looks up and grins. It is Grumblejack. “What a woman,” he says to you. “Me in love!” He chases after her.

“Such is the mating rites of Ogres.” Sakkarot says sipping from his tankard. Unlike the other bugbears, Sakkarot paces himself never getting more than a little tipsy. As the bestial festivities die down, he invites you into his private chambers. His private chambers is an A-frame hut made of mud and pine branches, which actually gives the building a clean smell. The hut has a cozy fireplace and fur rugs from previous hunts. A pair of bugbear women and waiting here, but he dismisses them with a growl.

“My followers do not need to hear our conversation,” he speaks softly as he places his flaming axe in the fire place.

“When they saw your display, they were chanting “Red Star” in Goblin. The hoard is not knowledgeable enough to recognize the symbol of the Infernal Father. Red Star may yet be your organization, your master, or even one of you. Rumors among the men will be plentiful. . . But that is not why I asked you here.

“You are traitors to your own kind. You must know that. When Balentyne fails and my horde pours through its shattered gates, we will slaughter the Talireans by the thousands. Yet I see no regret in your eyes. Tell me, How can this be?”

I'm just going to have Sakkarot respond to each of your comments directly rather try and weave a coherent conversation together. We will pretend each of these threads happens on their own rather than simultaneously. Cause this is play by post and it's easier that way.

And to Mira, he raises an eyebrow at the mention of her desire to rule. "Oh? You believe you are the one Thorn will place on the throne in the end?” He laughs, “Or perhaps you plan to marry the new king?” With a snort he downs his drink and pours a refill. You do note that Sakkarot certainly does not believe that he will be the one sitting on the throne.

“Thorn hold his plan close to his chest. But he does not share readily with the other knots. We each know what we need to know. I know the Ninth will break the watch wall so that I may lead my army into Talingarde. I know the Seventh will ensure I establish my foothold by assassinating the local military leaders. I know that the Second Knot is Thorn's personal body guards. And I know that in time the people of Talingarde will turn to an Asmodean leader who will save them from my horde. But that is all I know of the knots. I know nothing of the Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, or Eighth Knots.” He looks at his Drink. “Perhaps I have drank enough tonight. Certainly, I am under no illusions that I am the one Thorn wants on the throne; I suspect he is keeping that honor for someone more easily...Controllable. Still, as we've been frank with one another, I will not betray your trust if you do not mine. You have my word." She nods, then adds, "Back to a more sober note. The Bugbear grins. "Faith. Human Woman. I have faith in Asmodeus, and in you. For each must play their role in this dicey game. As for the Numerous and Plentiful Combatants of Talingard, They have had advantage against Bugbears in the past due to superior armor, weapons and fortifications. All things you will negate."

He swirls his cup, then remembers that he decided not to drink anymore tonight. "Over the next week, more tribes will rally to my banner. I will promise them blood and give them steel. After that I will spend a week moving camp to a valley North of Balentyne. Then I will be poised to strike. I can hold my army together for another two weeks. After that, I expect desertions and squabblings to weaken the force. So I must have faith that you will open the gates of the Watch Wall before then. And you, have Thorn's faith else he would not have sent you."

As the conversation winds down, Sakkarot hands you a rocket. “Use this to signal my forces when you are ready for us to attack. Remember: Two weeks until we are in position. After that two weeks until the Horde suffers desertions and in-fighting. That's one month. Hail Asmodeus!”

Back on the ship. Odenkirk is uneasy. Bugbears are eyeing the ship and the tasty crew, but not brave enough to defy Sakkort and attack. “That leader is trouble. You can tell by the eyes. He's smart, plotting. Bugbears should not be smart.”

Now there is one task left to you this act: Slaying Odenkirk and crew. But when to strike?
A) Attack now with the bugbears on your side.

Advantage-Battle is a rout. No need to even run it.
Disadvantage – Bugbears take all the loot. And someone needs to spend an skill-point on Profession: Sailor and Knowledge: Geography. Trip takes 1d3+1 days
B) During the trip to Aldencross. Battle is run normally.

Advantage- you get the loot for yourself.
Disadvantage – Someone still must spend a skill-point on Profession Sailor and Knowledge: Geography Trip takes 1d2 days
C) Upon arrival to Aldencross. Battle is run normally.

Advantage- you get the loot. No need to waste skill points. Trip takes one day.
Disadvantage – no help from the horde.

Grumblejack is waiting for you after your meeting with Sakkarot. He has a few light wounds, but he seems to be happy. “Grumblejack has girlfirend.” he grins and says her name with a sigh. “Karlotta Bonegrinder. Me has to find her tasty human bones, maybe shiny elf teeth for necklace. And raven's eggs. They're her favorite for omelets and fortune telling.”

The trip is swift across the mist-shrouded Lake Tarik under the cover of darkness. Throughout the journey, Odenkirk complains about not getting paid enough. He sails to a point on the southern shore only a cuple of hours from the Tower Balentyne and the small town of Aldencross.

As the ship reaches the shore, the time to attack comes.

As the ship approaches shore, the Half-Orc seeks a few moments of solitude from the sailors. In private, he voices an incantation of his Draconic bloodline and exhales as he feels the infinitely thin barrier of force spring into existence around his person. "No sense making it easy," he mumbles to himself as he returns to the deck. He eschews the opportunity to make himself useful once more, instead drawing his blade and almost lovingly tending to its oiling and cleanliness.

As Caleb sets aside his spear, signaling the attack, the Half-Orc turns his attention to the captain. He takes only a moment to assess the positions on the deck, choosing the nearest sailor as his first target. Stepping closer, he tightens his grip on the blade. With no warning whatsoever, he brings it crashing down towards the unprepared sailor's neck.
