What's the lowest price I can get for a custom item that grants constant Mage Armor and Shield. Assume the guidelines in the DMG are being used.
This is for no reason other than interest.

2,000 GP each.

See pricing for the Bracers of Armor.

An item that provides a continuous Mage Armor or Shield should be priced according to the armor/shield enhancement bonus chart, not according to the spell effect chart.

2,000 GP each.

For both effects on the one item?

I believe that according to errata, spells that provide numerical bonuses must be priced according to the bonus pricing guidelines and not the spell guidelines. So an item of continuous Mage Armor would cost the same as Bracers of Armor +4 or 16,000 gp. Shield bonuses aren't specified in the table, so you'd have to use the AC Bonus (Other) heading, meaning that a continuous shield item would cost 2.5 times that of a comparable armor bonus, or 48,000 gp.

He said lowest price following the guidelines. That is the lowest price. It's just a matter of semantics. You don't get a continuous mage armor, you get a use activated mage armor with an activation condition of "the wearer takes a breath".

It's legal per RAW but no DM should ever allow it.

 Very cheesy. Let's assume the DM has some common sense and doesn't allow that :smalltongue:

Uh, the condition on which a use-activated item is that the item is used. So you kinda need an item that is used by you breathing...

...Maybe a gas mask?

The mouthharp of mage armor! I love it!

If possible you're supposed to use existing items of similar effect as a guidline.

Indeed. That is part of the guidelines. To ignore the part about comparing similar items would be to ignore the guidelines.

There is much more to the guidelines than the table.

The guidelines are NOT rules, people. Stop talking like they are. They're simply generalized guidelines to try to help you on your way in houseruling up some new items.

It seems that the entire combo of allowing "use activated" with buff enchantments is broken, is it not?

I would bump the price of shield as well, as it gives more than just an AC bonus.

The proper response is "about the cost of Bracers of Armor +8", assuming the item is in a slot affiliated to AC bonuses. In other words, 64,000 gp.

OMG guys, stop being such dirty munchkins on a thread that has no relevance to any actual game being played now or in the future. Also, sarcasm is now illegal.

Wait...damnit.

Personally I prefer greater mirror image instead of mage armor, as it allows for matrix reinactments as well as pissing off people who don't have trueseeing.
