On this day in 1983 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983_Soviet_nuclear_false_alarm_incident), A false alarm almost started a nuclear war. LTC Petrov broke a bunch of policy regs and violated procedure, but managed to stop the then-USSR from launching a retaliatory strike against a computer phantom.
