Hi everyone!

I know it's totally insane and broken - but seems also totally insane and broken FUN as a thought experiment, sooo....

If you could choose from the different subclass/archetype features of your class every time you reach a level that provides such a feature, what would you do?

So as a fighter you could choose for example the level 3 Champion features at level 3, the level 7 Battle Master feature at level 7 and so on (but no level 3 features a level 7 and the like)...

Now... What would you do?

If given a choice between subclass Features, I would choose to play a Rogue with the following.

Roguish Archetype Features
Level 3: Rakish Audacity (Swashbuckler)
Level 9: Superior Mobility (Scout)
Level 13: Ambush Master (Scout)
Level 17: Thieves' Reflexes (Thief)

Rakish Audacity + Ambush Master + Thieves' Reflexes = x2 Sneak Attacks on the first round because of the high probability of consecutive turns.

Oh, that would be very, very easy. I love Damage Redirection, and the Oath of Redemption has that to the hilt...except it misses a few things, like Warding Bond as part of its Spell List. (Coincidentally, that's something the Paladin is missing). The Oath of the Crown has the other half, except...well, I can't return damage to the enemy. Well, how about mixing and matching the two and get exactly what I've always wanted on a Paladin build!?

Let's go for Crown as Red, and Redemption as Blue.

Oath Spells
3rd - command, compelled duel
5th - hold person, warding bond
9th - aura of vitality, spirit guardians
13th - guardian of faith, stoneskin
17th - circle of power, hold monster

The Oath of the Crown spell list is pretty solid. Both Hold spells and Stoneskin means I get a ton more resilience, and nice CC spells on top of the awesomesauce that is Spirit Guardians.

Channel Divinity: Champion Challenge, Rebuke the Violent

Combine an "aggro" effect with a sweet retributive effect if the enemy attacks someone other than me? Yeah, they'll want to hit me, that's for sure.

7th level feature: Aura of the Guardian

This is what Divine Allegiance would have wanted to be - does the exact. Same. Thing. ...but with longer range. At the end, that aura reaches 30 ft. With Tunnel Fighter, Champion Challenge and Warding Bond, you're effectively controlling the flow of damage even if you stand in one spot - either they hit you, or they hit you.

15th level feature: Protective Spirit

Advantage against paralysis and stun is very good, but you already have Charisma up the wazoo added to your already sweet saving throws. You're gonna get hit. A LOT. So, having a minor form of Fast Healing/Regeneration/what

In short: take the chassis of Oath of Redemption, but replace pretty much the entire spell list for the Oath of Crown one. And switch one of the CD options, for completion.

Warlock
1 - Hex Warrior, Hexblade's Curse (The Hexblade)
3 - Pact of the Blade
6 - Misty Escape (The Archfey)
10 - Raven's Shield (The Raven Queen)
14 - Hurl Through Hell (The Fiend)

Melee Warlock, wearing medium armor and a martial weapon, using charisma to hit and damage. Misty Escape let's me bamf out of an attack, Raven's Shield gives me fear immunity, along with advantage on death saving throughs and necrotic resistance, and Hurl Through Hell is just a badass ability. I mean, look at it!

I'll take a look at my spell selections in a bit, and edit this post to reflect my findings.

Level 3: Bear totem (Totem Warrior)
Level 6: Mindless Rage (Berserker)
Level 10: Battlerager Charge (Battlerager)
Level 14: Rage beyond Death (Zealot)

Solid. I'd go this route too.

Edit. I might actually go Zealot at 3. The radiant damage has been Awfully nice in my current campaign.

Definitely OP. Also definitely awesome. Good pick.

=============

I'd go with some Paladin stuff.

Spell List:
Swap out the OoV Protection from Energy in favor of the OoC Fear

3rd Level:
Oath of Vengeance Vow of Emnity
Oath of Devotion Sacred Weapon

NOTE: There's a little overlap here, but whatever.

7th Level:
Oath of Conquest Aura of Conquest
Oath of Ancients Aura of Warding

(Toss up here. I'd take whatever fit the character better at the time)

15th Level:
Oath of Conquest Scornful Rebuke

20th Level:
Oath of Vengeance Avenging Angel
Oath of Conquest Invincible Conqueror

(Another toss up. Invincible conqueror is probably more widely applicable, but the fly speed from Avenging Angel [and the accompanying visual image] is badass)

=============

Another even more broken thought experiment would be: what class features would you take for a character level 1-20, without any regard for staying within one class?

Interesting thought experiment. I'll bite.

For Druid I would go:
2nd: Land- I prefer caster Druids. This gets you a cantrip, recovery, and bonus spells
6th: Shepard- makes Conjure x spells ridiculous
10th: Dreams- I was tempted to go Moon for elementals, but teleporting is fun
14th: Shepard- not a lot of great options here, so I'll go with not dying

Monk:
3rd: Hand- adds a ton of versatility and control
6th: Shadow- again teleporting is fun
11th: Death- death saves can nope the hell out of here
17th: Hand- gotta respect the only save-or-die in the game

Personally, I'd use a Devotion/Ancients blend.

Level 3: Devotion
Level 7: Ancients
Level 15: Devotion
Level 20: Ancients

Agreed; this route looks like Rage incarnate!
