So, the scenario is, the GM says "no prerequisites". I've got ideas for low OP (things like finally getting to play with Whirlwind Attack). I've got ideas for really high to TO OP. But not for what I'd call playably-high OP.

So my thought is, Ur-Priest. But... then what? What would be really cool to go into with Ur-Priest as a base, if you didn't have to care about prerequisites? My best thought thus far is Mystic Theurge. Anybody got anything better - especially if it's something you'd never try if you had to care about prerequisites?

Try using Bone Knight, from Five Nations. It's not particularly strong, but it gets d10 HD while advancing spellcasting, and adds a lot more RP-wise than most other prestige classes.

I would take Bone Knight at 1st level for proficiencies, grab Ur-Priest 2, and trade the Ur-Priest Rebuke Undead for Rebuke Dragons in Dragon Magic (since you don't need its "Cleric or Paladin" prerequisite). That way you'll also have Rebuke Undead from Bone Knight so you get double the turn/rebuke uses to power divine feats. You should be able to take Divine Metamagic: Persist without taking Extend or Persistent Spell, even.

With no prerequisites, be sure to pick up Weapon Supremacy in PH2. I'd also get Martial Stance for a high level stance, like Balance on the Sky or Supreme Blade Parry, and Martial Strike a few times for Time Stands Still and Inferno Blast. The maneuvers are only usable 1/day, but still definitely worth it, especially if you can Psychic Reformation it to something else (Iron Heart Surge) later on.

As far as your build goes beyond Ur-Priest 2/ Bone Knight 10, you could get Hierophant (Divine Reach to persist touch spells), or even look at the epic prestige classes (http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/epicBasicsAndClasses.htm) since prerequisites are irrelevant.

Bladesinger.

Not because it's particularly good, but because its got particularly awful prerequisites.

Ur Priest + Sublime Chord, and then theurge the two :smallcool:

Since there aren't requirements, you'll have 4th level minimum slots from sublime chord, but is that a bad thing? :smalltongue:

Oooo, on the subject of Theurge... how about Wizard ~> Sublime Chord ~> Ultimate Magus.

Wizard caster level stacking for the SC ought to remove the need for the usual Ultimate Magus shenanigans via Practiced Spellcaster.

Beside the fast progression spellcasting classes, you may want to look at monster prestige classes.

In particular, have a look at Fiend of Possession, Fiend of Corruption and Illithid Savant.

Beholder mage and mystic theurge... double 9s by level 11, thanks.

If no prerequisites, Fochlucan Lyrist is better than mystic theurge.
I will also second Sublime Chord generally

Apostle of Peace (or some other Exalted thing like Exalted Arcanist), just for the laughs.

Epic spells, Beholder Mage, Illithid Savant, etc, are on my "oh, we're playing TO level?" list. I've got that covered. :smallwink:

Sublime Chord and Mystic Theurge get a lot of virtual ink, so I'm guessing that they'd be good, even in a normal game. They sound like a good fallback plan if i can't build something more clever.

Fiend of Possession / Corruption - now that's an angle I'd never considered. I'm not sure how to make that work well with Ur-Priest, though. But I like the fluff of being evil, stealing and granting power.

I'll have to read up on most of the rest of these...

Malconvoker, Constructor, and Mind Mage, with Dual-Plane Summons. Double fiend summons in ectoplasmic power armour.

Edit: Obviously, UP isn't arcane, so uh, not Mind Mage, but Psychic Theurge will do. You only need ML 9.

I'd be eyeing epic content, like epic vestiges (https://web.archive.org/web/20090619191821/http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/drfe/20080407a) and epic invocations (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ei/20061027a). Not to mention epic prestige classes, like those ones from Draconomicon.

Ur Priest 1/Warlock 1/Eldritch Disciple 9/Sublime Chord 1/Eldritch Theurge 8

Get double 9s and 18/20 Invocation levels (gets 2 Dark)

This is of course ignoring all the prereqs
Can swap in Beholder Mage for Sublime Chord if you feel like it

Not to mention epic prestige classes, like those ones from Draconomicon.

Start taking Dragon Ascendant at 1st level, get divine rank 0 (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/divine/divineRanksAndPowers.htm) at 12th level.

Take the epic Warlock feats Shadowmaster, Master of the Elements, Morpheme Savant, and Paragon Visionary to have some of the most powerful at-will abilities of anyone in the party. Getting the three core Power Word spells at-will, and Summon Monster IX at will, and Shades at will, will make your DM wonder why he would have even considered trying this.

I'm not saying those aren't amazing ideas for this situation, but sometimes you need to limit yourself to what will be fun for everyone. Just go with something that looks like it would be fun but not too powerful, that wouldn't have been playable otherwise due to limiting prerequisites.

Ur-Priest into Stormlord, using Gloves of Endless Javelins (costs 3,500 gp, 280 xp, and seven days to craft, assuming you don't need to meet the prerequisites) would probably be pretty cool.

Ur-Priest 1/Sublime Chord 1/Fochlucan Lyrist 9/Dragon Disciple 9

Dual 9ths, using DD to get extra 9th level slots.
