View Full Version : Ghostly Gaze vs. Petrifying Gaze

So I had a random thought the other day and wasn't sure how it would play out. So one of the warlock invocations in XgtE is Ghostly Gaze, which allows the warlock to see through solid objects as if they were ghostly transparent. How would this match up against Petrifying Gaze? Petrifying Gaze (at least the version that the Medusa and Basilisk have) requires both the target and the user to see each other, with the target having a chance to avert their eyes to avoid being turned to stone.

So let's say our warlock puts on a blindfold and uses ghostly gaze to see. If they come across a creature that then uses petrifying gaze, would the blindfold protect the warlock, even though the warlock can see the enemy, since there is a physical object in between their eye contact? And in a follow up question, if petrifying gaze is used against a mirror reflection of the user, it turns the user to stone, so what would happen if the warlock was holding up a mirror and used ghostly gaze to see through the mirror, would the physical object protect him, or would both of them turn to stone?

In the hypothetical with the blindfold, it looks like the warlock would still be vulnerable to the petrifying gaze. The rules for petrifying gaze require the warlock to be able to see the medusa's eyes, but only require the medusa to see the warlock in general.

For the same reason, the warlock would still be vulnerable if he was covering his eyes with a held mirror. The Medusa would also be vulnerable to the gaze, tho.

Then again, it wouldn't be unreasonable to rule that the ghostly, transparent images the warlock sees are different enough from looking at the medusa's actual eyes to not subject the warlock to petrification.

Given how limited Ghostly gaze is, I would salute the player for their clever and inventive problem solving.
