View Full Version : Have You Had Success With Champion Challenge?

Oath of the Crown Paladin's Channel Divinity feature. Each creature you choose within 30 feet of you must remain within 30 feet of you if they fail a will save. Seems like this would shut down kiting ranged attackers, but it seems pretty weak as a tanking ability, giving that my squishy party members are rarely more than 30' away in typical combat encounters.
Has anyone had any success with it? Any insights?

Also, is it just me or does Champion Challenge sound like a gameshow?

Takes your bonus action now (thanks to its desperately needed errata (https://media.wizards.com/2017/dnd/downloads/SCAG-Errata.pdf)). Still leaves them with a fairly wide range of movement in most dungeon-like environments. Allows a save. Has a fair number of ways to end the effect even if they fail their save. It even effectively can be used to constrict your own movement if you don't want to lose the effect. For example, if two enemies affected are on opposite sides of you and each are 30 feet away, you can't really move without breaking the effect. And while it'll stop a fast kiter from continuing to run away from you, you still need to get within 30 feet of them in the first place to attempt the Challenge. And many enemies will be able to attack from range or the like even if they can't reach their preferred target.

On the other hand, it's an AoE, so you can totally jump into the middle of a charging army and challenge them all. So there's that. And of course your allies can react to someone being challenged by simply moving more than 30 feet away from you. And the fact that it's a bonus action now and doesn't allow repeated saves (like Compelled Duel does) means you can do some fun stuff with it if your allies have enough room to maneuver and your enemies don't.

When casting it, try to run into a position that allows enemies as little room for movement into advantageous locations as possible. Can help to combine it with your party creating AoE hazards and such.
