In 1e / 2e / 4e, a PC was usually just one class. The exceptions were dual-classing (1e / 2e for humans only) and multi-classing (for non-humans; or in 4e for anyone via hybrid classes).

3e introduced a new type of multiclassing, which is what 5e uses -- but I'd like to consider a rules variant which used 1e / 2e / 4e class mechanics instead. I'm going to use the 4e term hybrid for this because "multiclass" already means something else in 5e.

For the purpose of this thread, let's stipulate:
A PC has one class. You can't dip into another class.
Class-feature feats might be a thing (4e style); some already exist in 5e, like Magic Initiate and Martial Initiator. There ought to be more.
A Hybrid PC will effectively level up in two classes at once, but you are somewhat behind a single-class character in terms of acquiring spells & class features. The specific mechanics of what you get at 1st level and what you get as you level up need to be worked out.

For hybrid character mechanics, maybe something like...

- Derive effective caster slots by calculating the (multiclass sum / 2), then looking that up on the multiclass table. So a level 12 Wizard | Cleric would get slots as a level 12 caster, but a level 12 Druid | Barbarian would get slots as a level 6 caster, and a level 12 Sorcerer | Paladin would get slots as a level 9 caster.

- Derive level for other class features in a similar way? How in specific?

- Maybe derive initial class features by looking at what you'd get by multi-classing in, so Heavy armor is rare on a hybrid? Or maybe get half the sum of armor proficiencies, so you only get Heavy armor if both classes in your hybrid mix have Heavy armor?
