We’re playing a gurps supers campaign and one of my players has 7 levels in binding with unbreakable. How we understand it is that if he his with a binding, I make a quick contest roll to try to roll higher than his binding ST score (7).

Are we doing this correctly?

It seems that an exceptionally strong character should have an easier time of escaping than your average joe.

Also, what happens when he gets his binding over level 18 (ST 18) are npcs unable to break out or escape?

So with binding the binding also rolls. So its not roll and succeed by more than 7, its roll and succeed by more than the binding did on its roll versus 7. So with bindings past level 16 you are increasing the amount by which you succeed need to succeed to break free (as a roll of a 17 or 18 is always a failure).

And yes exceptionally strong or agile (you get your choice of strength or dexterity) should be better at escaping what amounts to a couple of ropes wrapped around them.

I think I’m still not understanding.

So in our scenario the player hits on his binding attack

The players binding is 7th level so it has ST 7

The next round the npc tries to break free and rolls against his own ST (we’ll say his ST is 12) he rolls a 6 beating his ST by 6.

The player rolls against his binding ST of 7 and also gets a 6

So since the NPC had a greater margin of victory he breaks free?

Yes. Also if they fail by less they also break free.

Ahh ok, that makes more sense. We didn’t think we were doing it right. Thank you.

The important thing to remember is with GURPS, absent damage, you are always looking to roll under something. But no problem.
