This is the 19th section of the Order of the Stick Trivia thread

If there are any newcomers, here are the rules:

The first player to answer a question correctly, asks the next one.
If that player doesn't have a question immediately in mind, then state "Open Question" ("OQ") and let someone else ask.
Questions have to have an answer that is demonstrated by at least one, and no more than three, canon online strip. (No bonus material either online or in the books)
No counting questions with more than 3 parts. For example: how many times has Roy said "the".
If the answer given is not the answer expected, but still technically answers the question, allow it. You can rephrase and ask your question again later.
There's a difference between rephrasing—finding a different, more precise way to word the question so it has a smaller number of possible answers—and just simply rewriting to rule out the last answer. Over and over again. Don't do the latter.
If an answer is given that in no way is correct, then players can call attention to the fact. At that point, there may be 2 questions occurring at the same time. The 1st question that was incorrectly answered is the valid question. The second question may be answered, but for no prize (aka asking the next question).
If your response is ninja'd, that is if someone beats you with the correct answer, please edit your post stating, "ninja'd, please answer above question".
After 24 hours without an answer, please provide a hint. After an additional 24 hours pass, please provide the answer and take pride that you have stumped us all.
Recognize that this is a game. It is supposed to be quick and fun. If a question seems to go beyond the rules, assume that the author is not familiar with the rules, and point them out. If the author affirms that the question is allowable within the rules, then continue with the game. If the question turns out to be not allowable, it becomes an open question. Groan and move on.
Questions along the lines of "when was the first time X happened/was mentioned" are not allowed because to prove that they never happened before, one would have to link to every strip before it, which is unreasonable and would break the no-more-than-three-strips rule.

9170378 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=9170378) find me a roach that is NOT demonic.
9219323 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=9219323): Well, I look at is as a way to possibly learn another "minor overlooked trivia". ie, the demon roach who is supposed to look like the guy on the Monopoly game.
9226398 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=9226398): [Find a demon screaming for mom.] By the way, I think the real answer to the demon question is the demon roach in this strip .

10121804 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=10121804): Now your question is going to be bugging me for ages...I wouldn't have got the demon roaches thing, to be honest, but you're saying that's not what you were thinking of anyway! Any chance you could tell us, or would you have to kill us subsequently?

15086501 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=15086501): Which strip has a tiny demon roach doll?
15364326 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=15364326): [who's going to make a fortune on the internet?] The demon roaches (Telepork! (TM)).

15435302 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=15435302): Actually, the dinosaurs. See what the roach says. We'll use your question, though.
15484773 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=15484773): Find me someone, other than Xykon and Redcloak (and I suppose the Demon Roaches), who knows what the MitD actually is. And, no, "A Good Man" is not the answer I am looking for.
15697426 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=15697426): [Find a comic where an animal is wearing something in one panel but not in the next panel, without an explanation of why.] one of the demon roaches is wearing an Indiana Jones hat and belt, and in their next appearance the hat and belt are gone.

16905957 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=16905957): That's the one. The reference was to Redcloak saying MitD was going to attract more demon roaches if he didn't clean up after himself.

21231019 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=21231019): Could it be the MitD and roaches? (panel 5) I count 8 though, 6 from MitD and 2 from roaches.
21477995 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=21477995): The king of all roaches
21913483 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=21913483): [Find a lightsaber fight.] Who else but the demon roaches?
22203933 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=22203933): Hmmm.. I guess that answers the question. The Roach King certainly feels he should get cake. I was thinking of a more explicit "this person/these people get cake" kind of a thing. There are roaches present when the opinion is expressed.
22205369 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=22205369): The demon roaches are listed as major characters in that thread, so the last answer still holds up.
22820950 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=22820950): [Taking the OQ, who says "Make love, not war"?] Demon-roach [Note: same panel as in 19944910 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=19944910).]
23134158 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=23134158): [Find me a light sabre fight.] The demon-roaches, of course. [Note: same question as in 21913483 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=21913483) and 9328002 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=9328002).]
23150683 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=23150683): [find] someone stepping on a demon roach.
23310913 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=23310913): [Who reminds us that more buffing probably happens off-panel?] The demon roaches .
23336810 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=23336810): Find 2 different species of roach.
23401023 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=23401023): Try checking the demon roaches' lines.
23401680 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=23401680): That’s what I was going for, but now that I look back, there are a bunch of people that are not evil that the roaches talk to.
23401370 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=23401370): Find a demon roach taking to a non-team evil member, hobgoblin, and non-O-Chul character (SOD doesn’t count)
23434131 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=23434131): That was indeed what I was looking for. While we might have seen them all by now, the demon roach didn't think so at the time of that comic.
23454747 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=23454747): What do we have over— Hint: It was said by a demon roach in Gobbetopia
23458937 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=23458937): What causes the demon roaches to keep appearing?
23495677 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=23495677): Divination spells from the dark one, according to the Demon Roaches
23477724 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=23477724): [Find someone with monocle and white mustache.] Depends on your definition of someone . Roaches count, right?
23502277 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=23502277): What joke did the demon roaches find to be a stretch?

-----

find me a brown-skinned non-humanoid with grey hair standing next to another non-humanoid with black skin and black hair. This one's a toughie, it got me occupied for a long time. The only non-humanoids with hair that I can recall are the lizardfolk, horses, dogs, cats. We see lizardfolk in #676 (prostitutes) (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0676.html), #413 (throwaway joke for pre-painted miniatures in randomized boosters) (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0413.html), #777 (Ganji and another gladiator) (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0777.html), but they all have green skin. Lizardfolk probably aren't supposed to have hair because they're reptiles, not mammals, but everyone was too preoccupied with the boobs so that didn't get much attention. Kobolds are yellow and have no hair, although the Oracle is wearing a shower cap to protect his nonexistent hair and a shower brush to wash his scaled body (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0329.html), and he even calls the humans “disgustingly-hairy mouth-breathing ape-people”. Dragons are of various color and usually have no hair, although one of Tiamat's head has a suspicious attachment (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0331.html). #55 has a blue monster with red eyes and red hair among the monsters imprisoned by Dorukan's amulet (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0055.html). It must be horses then. In #173, Haley is riding a horse with black skin and black hair, but Durkon is riding a yellow-skinned horse with brown hair, so that's only half of the pair. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0173.html) In #141, we see that Vaarsuvius's horse has brown skin and gray hair. And in the tenth panel, it's walking right behind Haley's horse with the black skin and black hair, so that is my answer. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0141.html) Is that what you were thinking, qbits, or did you have some other monsters in your mind?

If so, What brand of popcorn does the MitD eat? I generally don't just search for phrases of the question in the transcript anymore unless I already know what strip I'm looking for, because it feels cheap, and it only answers easy trivia questions anyway. But looking at the index of strips about the MitD (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=23206731) is another matter altogether, because I compiled that index. The descriptions in the first half of the index suck, I should rewrite them at some point to include all the important details. For example, they don't mention popcorn at all. Anyway, in #82, the MitD is eating “Nifty Pop” popcorn while watching the scrying ball (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0082.html). He's eating popcorn again in #369 when watching the fight between Redcloak and Miko (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0369.html), but the brand isn't identified. OQ.

Find 2 stacks of plates. Durkon tries to help her mom doing the washing up, and she ends up dropping them and breaking. Since Durkon's mom is in it, it must be in one of the flashbacks that Durkon shows to Greg, but I think it's one of the earlier ones presented in the comic. I think it's right before the giant frog scene. Yup, here it is all right in #963, first panel. The second stack of plates is still on the table. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0963.html) OQ.

Those are in fact the horses I had in mind, although not the specific strip (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0207.html) that I looked at. I commend you. Ah, #207 matches the description better because the horses are standing in place rather than trotting.

Find the king of all roaches. Dude! I don't normally care about too easy questions, but I'll chew you out on this one.

The title of this thread is “Order of the Stick Trivia XIX: It's Always the Demon Roaches ”. In the first post of this new thread, in the spoiler box clearly labeled “Incomplete list of questions mentioning of demon roaches (compiled by b_jonas)”, you can literally find the word “king” referring to the king of roaches no less than four times. All four of them have a link at the front of the line that leads to a post in previous Trivia threads. The first one is 13690312 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=13690312), which is a question, and the answer is the post right after it (www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?246764&p=13690337&viewfull=1#post13690337), linking to #116, the strip with the “King of All Roaches” with a crown in the second panel (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0116.html). For what crime has a bearded man, who can be found standing on an upturned bucket, been convicted? Oh, a two-part question! I know that one. This bearded man in Azure City prison is standing on a bucket in #458 before Nale breaks out. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0458.html) (Nale uses a better footstool than a bucket.) That man has class levels, and was committed for kidnapping, as we found out in #420, when Hinjo releases Tsukiko, Belkar, and that guy who wants to assassinate Hinjo. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0420.html)

Update: Personification answered faster, so I won't ask a question. Personification: does the word "no" still count if Haley speaks it ciphered, such in #393 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0393.html)? It's unlikely to matter, he doesn't say "no" enough times for what you asked, just wondering.

Update: Personification: nice tough question by the way. It's not #694, that only has eight instances of "no" in two panels together. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0694.html) Nor is it Miko's “NO! No more compromises, no more delays, no more backing down before the battle is won!” in #406 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0406.html). And Belkar only exclaims a single big “NO!!” (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0411.html) when he realizes that he'll never kill Windstriker. It's not #894 either: that's when Nale says “No no no no no no NO!” as he sees the message on the gate in Girard's pyramid (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/images/rTRsdf9ewds03kqew894.gif).

Find me something dramatic (not) happening. I think that's after the Escape scene, when nothing dangerous pops out to kill O-Chul after he taunts fate with his words (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0663.html). I know this one because the Escape is one of my favourite story arcs, and I've re-read it many times, often to clarify the clues we have about the MitD. You might mean something else, but Elan saying “dun dun dun” when Trigak died in #21 doesn't seem to fit (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0021.html) because I expect Trigak's dramatic return later, not right then. The other time that Elan says “dun, dun, dun” also doesn't seem to fit (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0968.html). It could perhaps be #855, when Roy expected a cutaway panel (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0855.html), but we didn't get one, because we already one in #844 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0844.html), and #843 showed that Vaarsuvus has fallen into a trap (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0843.html).

an aquatic goblinoid species Aquatic goblinoids? Wow. I didn't know those existed. Even #1038 only mentions goblins, hogoblins, bugbears, norkers, nilbogs (who may or may not exist), and the Dark One of whom it's unclear what species, if any, he comes of (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1038.html). Fun fact about goblinoids: if I understood correctly the explanation on the latest 5th edition books, they are a group of distantly related (or even not at all, it's not that clear) species, that were unified under the "goblin/goblinoid" umbrella whem Maglubiyet defeated and subjugated the gods of each race. Hm? No, you'd only need two strips- one with the page with MITD, and one where the demon roaches appeared, which took place earlier. You don't need to find their FIRST appearance, because if you can find ANY earlier appearance that means it takes place after they first appeared.

Although I think by the point you need to add a condition like that to your question, you might as well scrap it and find another.

Except that doesn't answer how the question (Just how sexy is Belkar?) was worded. Answering with the "As stubborn as he is stone cold sexy" using "Stone cold" to measure how sexy he is, even though "Stone cold" is part of the adjective. Easily fixed by changing the question to "How can you describe Belkar's sexiness" or just inferring "very" from the previous panel where his illusion is refusing to eat to answer.

It's not a bad thing to have questions guessed quickly. Difficult questions aren't necessarily better.

There are also ways to narrow it down without making it too obvious- you can indicate what chapter it's in, mention who it is that says something, point out something that happens on the same page, etc.

Gah! I've flicked through every page until Elan became a Dashing Swordsman, as well as every occasion I could remember where Elan sung afterwards, and I still can't find it! Did I flick past it by accident?

The closest I've found is this (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0238.html) which has 11 notes, and this (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0385.html) which has 10 but none of them are Elan's.

Comics I tried after Elan became a Dashing Swordsman include Elan singing while having his blood sucked (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0958.html), rub, rub, rub my father's face in my uselessness (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0918.html) and Therkla's death (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0593.html).

The most notes in one comic seems to be on #41 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0041.html) with 14.

That'll rule out some possibilities for whoever tries after me.

I'd say it's a consequence of rule 3: Questions have to have an answer that is demonstrated by at least one, and no more than three, canon online strip.

The index is not a canon strip, and none of the strips include the title, so an answer that depends on linking to here (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots.html) is not valid.

Find a gold candlestick holder. This is a tough one. The Giant depicts heaps of treasure as being made of gold coins and gems only, with the occasional sword, but no jewelry and helmets and gold candelabrum sticking out of it like I see in other depictions (like Réber's at least). Nale's demon summoning pentagram (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0361.html) has candles on the floor, with no candlestick holder, and the same is true for Durkon praying for help (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0007.html). #25 has a candle holder (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0025.html), I think it was even featured in this thread recently, but the holder is not gold. Perhaps the candlestick holder we're looking for was not used as a fixture in a building, but as a mobile lighting source carried by a human adventurer in a dark dungeon corridor. But Rich rarely draws dark corridors either, dungeons are just assumed to be lit unless the darkness matters for a joke or plot.

The strip in question contains Inkyrius. Ok, let's go through the notions then. Inkyrius only appears in three places: the ascension of Darth Vaarsuvius, the summons, and that one really good joke about Eugene's family life compared to Vaarsuvius's. The second one wins here: #679 fourth panel has a flashback to Vaarsuvius and Inkyrius, when the latter has prepared the table for dinner with the requested candlestick holder (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0679.html). Do you mean this (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0518.html) No. That one still has four rows of panels, with a thick black horizontal dividing line between each row (though the lines are often partly covered by speech balloons), it's just extra wide to the right. The page I'm talking about would be extra tall, except it's not because the other four rows are compressed, and it has one more thick black horizontal dividing line than usual. One of the four rows, the one with the projectile, is very narrow, but the other four aren't as tall as the normal one quarter page tall rows. I'm talking about just one book page though, not a full book page and part of another book page within the same strip number (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0429.html).

I made a quick and dirty tally of which OOTS strips are referenced the most often in the posts of these trivia threads. This is not accurate by any means, there are both false positives and false negatives. I count only straight up links to strips or images, and mentions of a hash mark followed by a number in the post text (because new posters aren't allowed to post links, not even to the OOTS strips). I don't count links or text in block quotes. I only count a strip once per post, and further, I only count a strip once when it appears in two immediately consecutive posts, since those are usually either two replies to the same question (ninja), or a comment on a reply.

The strip that is referenced the most often if #389 in which Elan meets airship captain Julio Scoundrél in a bar (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0389.html), with 92 references. Update: answering the question.

Find Belkar and Mr. Scruffy eating or drinking the same thing at the same time. Another nice question. That would be #834, in which both Belkar and Mr. Scruffy taste the river on the Semi-Elemental Plane of Ranch Dressing (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0834.html).

New trivia question: Find me a person damaging another person with a weapon, then giving the second person a hand helping them up when the second person fell on the floor, in the same strip.

Update: yup, Larre Gannd got it. Tarquin damages Nale and then helps him up in #820 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0820.html).

Impressive. Do you plan to share it with the other forumites in some manner? (on dropbox or google drive or something) I think it would be interesting. Ha! No. I'm looking at the strips that were never referenced in these threads, or were referenced only a few times, and ask questions with them as the answer. This way I'll probably be asking interesting new questions, not repeating the same boring questions. #858 was a strip that was possibly never referenced until Jasdoif's answer before, and the new question that I edited to the previous post (but you ninjaed me) was similarly inspired.

I won't post the list of strips that were never referenced, because that would make it too easy to find the answers to my questions. If someone wants, they could just download the contents of the threads and try a similar computation though. I even gave links to all 19 threads earlier. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=23510327) Each thread has about 50 pages. I originally downloaded them to figure out what title to suggest for this thread, that's how I found the mentions of the demon roaches in the first post of this thread.

Update 2018-12-02 21:16:

I don't think this counts (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0942.html), because there's no clear damage. I'll keep looking.

(For the record, even with the rules about double posting, I'd recommend posting your hint separately next time, because without any indicator that there's a new post in the thread, it's less likely people will actually check for a hint. Or at least, I wouldn't.)

Not only is there no damage, but I think Ian doesn't even attack, he only prepares the attack in case Uncle Geoff tries to escape. It's not the one I was thinking of, as you can see from my hint. It's a good find nevertheless.

I don't know what a rot13 is (and I didn't look it up because I like the challenge) but I've translated the hint:

I don't know what a rot13 is (and I didn't look it up because I like the challenge) but I've translated the hint:

ROT 13 is a simple cypher where each letter is switched with the one 13 letters away in the English alphabet. Since said alphabet has 26 letters, it means that the cypher works both ways: you can decypher with the exact same key.

All other ROTs - say, ROT 1 which you just replace each letter with the next one - need a separate decypher key.

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks! Looks like the key I made matches up.

Still, I don't regret working out the key from scratch. It's more fun that way.

Hint time: The clipboard is part of an intruder-detection system. Oh! That must be the captcha in the last panel of #812 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0812.html). The clipboard is where the soldier asks the answer for the captcha.

Before the hint, I was thinking of things like the Deva trying to give a report to Roy (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0664.html), or the private legal battle between Belkar (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0228.html) and Miko (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0230.html), or Haley's truce agreement with the thieves' guild (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0617.html) but those don't match your question.
