Has anybody else noticed how many choices there are for classes that in some ways are just slight variations of other classes?

Yes? It allows for a greater spread so that someone with a concept in mind has more options in order to bring it to life. If they like X part of one class but they really don't want to deal with Y from the same class, they might be able to use the X mechanics on a different chassis, or trade of the Y abilities for something else.
The way I tend to approach character creation for adventure paths is see what everyone else is making. If someone is passionate about making one character concept, and another wants a different one, then I see what roles those particular characters are going to fill and then pick something to fill the gap. With the plethora of options available, I can make just about anything work, and have fun doing it.
