i have a player wanting to play as a centaur and wield a lance and shield, but does a centaur count as mounted or not in this case?

Before people start bringing some kind of real world physics into this:

Sure, why not?

It’s one of the trade offs for having to sleep uncomfortably, be completely confounded by stairs, and unable to change direction in tight corridors.

RAW, no. Realistically, possible if they have a specialized saddle on their back to help hold it. You're the DM, you decide.

If they're riding another centaur, then yes.

I would allow a centaur to use a lance, yes.

I would say "yes." Part of the reason a feat is needed for Mounted Combat is because that counts as the bipedal player having been trained in the art of wielding a weapon on 4 legs instead of 2. Since a centaur is born with 4 legs, it would already know how to do that.

I would say yes otherwise whats the &***)@ point of being a Centaur.
Also I'd use that against the players with NPC's so fair is fair.
