View Full Version : Random Subclass Idea: Non-wizard based Partial Casters

I think it'd be pretty cool to see subclasses similar to the Arcane Trickster and the Eldritch Knight that dip into the spell lists of classes besides Wizards.

For example, there could a "Path of the Shaman Warrior" subclass that grants the barbarian limited spellcasting from the Druid spell list that they can perform while raging (possibly only while raging). Or a Rogue subclass, Inquisitor, that gains partial casting from the Cleric spell list.

Just some ideas I was thinking of.

Before the hexblade was released i imagined it as a warlock partial caster on the fighter.

Turned out pretty well in playtesting

Someone brought up the idea of using Arcane casting for a Horizon Walker, using Abjuration and Conjuration for your two wizard spell types.

The main concern with doing this with other classes is how "all over the place" the other spell lists are.

Evocation for Wizards is JUST blowing stuff up, so it's pretty clear what it does. However, Evocation in Cleric or Druid trees are blowing stuff up AND healing. So if you just wanted to make an elemental specialist using the Druid spell list's Evocation spells, you end up with a elemental caster with some nonsensical spells like Moonbeam and Cure Wounds.

my main concern with this is that, while wizard itself is potent, it is also the only actual class to use Int primarily. I think it'd be more interesting and better for the game, if there were more int using subclasses.

I view all of the pieces as interchangeable, for the most part.

If you really wanted to make a Rogue with the Ranger Spell list, go for it.

If you really wanted to make a green knight by making a Eldritch Knight Fighter with the Druid spell list, knock yourself out.

There's a possibility that some things are too powerful (a Sorcerer twinning Foresight, for example), but in my mind if a player wants a cool concept that needs a bit of a push, I say let them.
