Hello guys !

I'd love to discuss with you about char optimisation if you don't mind ! (I'm sure you don't :p)

So I want to use the Minotaur from Revnica's Guide and I am using point buy I want my minotaur to be qui the strong dude, quite defensive. Of course I dont want its strength to be lacking.

I now have :
STR 16
DEX 12
CON 14
INT 10
WIS 14
CHA 10

I don't necessarily wanna min max it but I'd like to know a couple things: am I right to put more STR since CON wud only raise hp by 1 ? Should I go for defensive archetype ? I prefer the defense and will play with a shield but I feel like Dueling is giving way more. I could be wrong so I figured I'd ask ! Last but not least, from what I understand the minotaur is a little nerfed compared to UA ? Are the horns still worth using when can be ?

Thanks a lot for your help !!

You can use Dueling with a shield.

Your CON is fine. STR 16 is very good for a lvl 1 Fighter, and it'd be overall more useful than STR 14 CON 16 for you.

Okay good, so you think dueling + shield is kinda better than defense + two handed weapon ? for defensive build ?

Depends what you mean by "defensive build".

What do you want to do beyond level 1?

Defense + Shield is better defensively but it completely guts your offense, and since dueling applys to your horn bash you really want that boost.

If you want more AC consider eldrich knight or a level or 9 in cleric for Shield of faith or the free +2 AC of forge. If you want more defensive utility look into expertise athletics for grappling, Battlemaster for manuvers, EK for spells, or Cavalier for their mark. Sentinal + PAM is also a known defensive/offensive trick. Shield mastery is also extremely good.

13/15 wis and res(wis) would be better. Con adds +1 hp per level so a 16 is almost mandatory later on.

That all said your spread looks perfectly usable and I would focus more on the fluff/skills side to really enjoy playing out the character. Mechanical choices and direction will solve themselves once you chose your fluff and know the options.

Using sword and shield the fighting style depend of what you or your group need.

- Dueling is the best for damage, offensive is a good defense the faster you kill something, the less it will hit you

- Defense is the best for your own survival, every AC point help specially at low level

- Protection is probably the best "tank" ability for the group, it's a reaction so you can only use it once a round but when the the DM rolls a 20 and still miss when attacking the party rogue because of the disavantage you caused, that feels great :-D

Guys really I'm so happy that I found so many great great answers to my questions, just reading the questions you asked me back helped me figuring out most of my concerns !

1 - I checked and really dont think the horns are included in the dueling bonus but that is still interesting cause i think warrioir dont have so many usages for their bonus action

2 - Why I put more points in dex and wis instead of having a con of 16 ? cause having 2 more points in con costs me 4 points (in point buy) which means 4 points to get +1 though with my way I get +2 with the same amount (+1 wis/+1dex) I understand you might think its not worth it but the reason I did that is, since I want a pretty solid character, I think increasing WIS and DEX help me a lot for saving throws. Again, you opinion matters to me so if you think I'm wrong please teach me !

3 - I think going shield + defense is super solid but it's not as effecient as dueling + shield for what I mean to do, I like what you said : offense is a solid defensive option !

4 - I wont grab shield mastery cause then it cancels the small interesting point of being a minotaur but indeed its pretty solid ! I'll check all of these specialisations/multiclassing you proposed, thanks for the tips !!

Looks good to me, I agree with Shield + Dueling.

With regard to your point #1 above, Dueling would not affect your horns since the ability specifically says a weapon in your hand. Though, I mean, I guess you could keep your hand empty and grab them when you attack if you really wanted to get that + 2.

Yeah I'll admit that it's wonky as hell, but the silliness of duelings wording has just led me to handwave an "ok we'll just assume you do the insane string of item interactions that lets this apply to everything if you only have one weapon" after one player just started carrying around a friggin bag of hammers.
