One of our favorite sorcerer archetypes from 4e was the Cosmic Sorcerer. General enough to fit into almost any setting, it played to our love of space and blasting the living daylights out of our foes with magic. When the time came to build archetypes for our home game, including this one was basically a no-brainer.

Sorcerous Origin: Cosmos
Your innate magic comes from the energy raining down from space. Perhaps you were born during a particularly auspicious alignment of celestial bodies. Phases and astrology and space, oh my!

COSMIC PHASE
When you choose this origin at 1st level, you embody the cycles of the cosmos. Whenever you are conscious you are in the phase of the sun, the moon, or the stars.

Phase of the Sun: While you are in the phase of the sun you radiate heat as the sun does. High heat cannot harm you and you produce enough heat to stave off dangerous cold. You have resistance to fire and cold damage.

Phase of the Moon: While you are in the phase of the moon you attune to the life giving flow of the tides. A perpetual mist clings to your skin and revitalizes you. You have resistance to necrotic damage, and when you roll a hit die to regain hit points, the minimum number of hit points you regain from each hit die is equal your Charisma modifier.

Phase of the Stars: While you are in the phase of the stars your mind is ensconced and protected in the darkness and solitude of the starry void. Your eyes reflect the stars your mind is lost in. You have resistance to psychic damage and advantage on saving throws against the charmed and frightened conditions.

You determine what phase you are in when you finish a long rest by rolling a d4. On a result of a 1 you are in the phase of the sun. On a result of a 2 you are in the phase of the moon. On a result of a 3 you are in the phase of the stars. On a result of a 4 you may choose what phase you are in.

PHASE CASTING
Also starting at 1st level, the phase you are in affects your spellcasting.

Blazing Sun: While you are in the phase of the sun, halve the amount of sorcery points it takes to create a spell slot (rounded up) and the amount of sorcery points you gain from converting spells to sorcery points (also rounded up.)

Full Moon: While you are in the phase of the moon, when you spend sorcerer points to apply a Metamagic effect, you may apply two Metamagic effects to any spell you cast rather than one.

Endless Stars: While you are in the phase of the stars, you may add one Metamagic effect other than Heightened Spell, Quickened Spell, or Twinned Spell to every spell you cast that is of a lower level than your sorcerer level divided by 3 without expending sorcery points.

COSMIC POWER
Starting at 6th level while you have resistance from your cosmic phase, your spells ignore resistance of that damage type. Additionally, you may spend sorcery points to use the following ability of your current phase.

Storm of the Sun: While you are in the phase of the sun and cast a spell that does radiant or fire damage, you may spend 2 sorcery points to release this damage type from yourself in destructive flares. This eruption causes any number of creatures of your choice that you can see within 10 feet of you to take the corresponding damage in an amount equal to your Sorcerer level.

Breath of the Moon: While you are in the phase of the moon, whenever you cast a sorcerer spell you may spend 2 sorcery points to regain a number of hit points equal to your Sorcerer level + your Charisma modifier.

Shield of Stars: While you are in the phase of the stars you can spend 2 sorcery points to erect a scintillating shield of stars around you. The glinting stars swirl and distract opponents, granting you ¾ cover until the end of your next turn.

CHANGING FATES
Starting at 14th level, you gain greater control over your phases. You may reroll a d4 to change your phase during a short rest. Once you use this feature, you must finish a long rest before you use it again.

COSMIC ALIGNMENT
At 18th level you gain the ability to briefly channel all of your phases. As a bonus action, you take on the visage of the cosmos, and are simultaneously in all phases. This ability lasts for 1 minute or until you fall unconscious. This ability can only be used once before requiring a long rest.

We have one player currently working this out for balance, and it seems okay, but we are always open to feedback and constructive criticism! Thanks, and enjoy! - T
