2018 Stick Tales Calendar

This year's Order of the Stick calendar is now available for pre-order. The theme this time around is Magic Items, with each picture showing characters getting their hands on some classic magic items, cursed and otherwise. Here's a cursed one, the Mirror of Opposition:

http://www.giantitp.com/Images/Calendar2019_UnifiedSample_6in.png

The calendar is the same 12" x 12" glossy full color affair as it has been in previous years, but it's also available as a digital edition. The digital edition is great if you just want to see the jokes and look at the art but don't need to actually hang it on your wall.

You can get the print version from Ookoodook (https://www.ookoodook.com/products/order-of-the-stick-2019-magic-item-calendar) and the digital edition from Gumroad (https://gum.co/ootscal2019#).

In both cases, it's important to note that this is a pre-order at this time. The calendars are scheduled to arrive on December 10th at the Ookoodook warehouse and they'll jump into action to mail them out after that. But sometimes stuff gets delayed at the printer, so that date is not a solid promise on our part. It's our best guess. For those who buy digital copies, those will arrive in your email inbox on December 17th, one week later.

OK, now let's talk holiday ornaments and t-shirts. As usual, these are coming from our partners at CafePress (https://www.cafepress.com/orderofthestick), and here's what we've got that's new:

This year's Battle Ornament features Lien and Oona (and Lancer) in a recreation of their first encounter.

For those days when you're feeling like a 12-foot-tall vessel of celestial justice.
http://www.giantitp.com/Images/CafePress2018/Deva_Forum.png (https://www.cafepress.com/orderofthestick/15694465)
For those days when you're...not.
http://www.giantitp.com/Images/CafePress2018/FerociousDinosaur_Forum.png (https://www.cafepress.com/orderofthestick/15692149)
It's important to remember your place in the cosmos...

http://www.giantitp.com/Images/CafePress2018/OuterPlanes_Forum.png (https://www.cafepress.com/orderofthestick/15692208)

...and that the grim specter of noogies hangs over us all.

So don't take yourself too seriously.

We also have three new kids' shirts with Saha, Oona, and Sigdi:
http://www.giantitp.com/Images/CafePress2018/Kids_Saha2018_Forum.png (https://www.cafepress.com/orderofthestick/15693550)

http://www.giantitp.com/Images/CafePress2018/Kids_Sigdi2018_Forum.png (https://www.cafepress.com/orderofthestick/15693603)

And I've also redesigned most of the old kids' shirts to feature the current art designs, because no kid wants to be wearing art from before they were born. Here's three of them:
http://www.giantitp.com/Images/CafePress2018/Kids_Sample2018_Forum.png (https://www.cafepress.com/orderofthestick/15693620)

You can click on any of those images to be brought directly to that design, too.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Why should I pre-order rather than just waiting until the calendar is in stock?
A: Pre-ordering lets me to judge how many copies I should print, and accurately estimating that is what allows me to produce a printed product at all. Even more so than with a book, I tend to order on the low side for calendars, simply because they become outdated very, very quickly. I'll have to place the order in the next few days, after I've seen the first round of sales, and as a result the calendar may very well sell out before it arrives in the warehouse. It happened the year before last! So if you want to be absolutely sure you get one on paper, the only way to do that is to pre-order.

Q: Why is the overseas shipping so expensive?
A: Because overseas postage rates are expensive, and most of the companies you're thinking of that charge less have international warehouses they can ship from, or use bulk rate shippers due to the large volume of products sold. Ookoodook is a very small company that does not have those kinds of resources, so they have to bring them to the post office like everyone else. If the postage is too high for your budget, we suggest purchasing the digital edition, or coordinating with friends near you to ship together.

Q: Why are you delaying the PDFs until the 17th? Why can't I download it today?
A: It's being delayed until the physical calendar is published so that some customers don't have to wait longer than other customers to read the jokes. We don't want some of our customers spoiling the others.

Q: Why would anyone want to pre-order a digital edition?
A: Mostly so they can get it done and not have to worry about remembering to order on the 17th, and also so I can avoid people asking me whether or not I'm releasing it digitally. Feel free to wait until the 17th to order, if you'd prefer. Unlike with physical copies, it doesn't really affect my planning whether or not you pre-order the digital.

Q: Will you be donating any portion of the calendar purchase price to charity this year?
A: Yes! For every calendar pre-ordered before December 7, we'll donate $2 to help the victims of the California wildfires. (We're still deciding which charities to support, but we'll probably pick 3-4 and spit it between them.)

Q: Will there be a holiday ornament and/or t-shirts from CafePress this year?
A: Yes, I'm just running a little late on getting them posted. Check back later today; I'll update this thread when they're available.

Q: Can I get the holiday ornament and the calendar shipped together?
A: No. The ornament and the calendar come from different vendors and cannot be combined in one shipment.

Q: Will there be a comic today?
A: Yes. A little later.

Please Note: Don't clutter this thread asking questions that are already answered in the FAQ above, including questioning/complaining about the overseas shipping rate. Moderators may remove redundant questions or posts. Posters who derail this thread may be asked to stop posting in it.

Also note that Gumroad is reeeeeeally slow today, probably because of "Cyber Monday." If you can't get through to make a purchase, try again later tonight or tomorrow.

I have an odd question that I hope isnt considered derailing: is there a reason the preview images for calendars typically aren't high enough resolution to read the speech balloons? Is it intentional to help prompt sales without giving away the full page in the preview, or just a graphical limitation on the site or images' end, or something you just don't really think about? I've tried rewriting this twice now to not sound accusatory, but just in case, this isn't supposed to be accusatory, and is just an honest question.

It would have to be full sized, 12" x 24", for it to really be legible, and that would not work out well within the forum post. It's much larger than a typical comic.

So, this may be a silly question. Typically when I get the calendar, I hang it from a nail on the wall in my bedroom. Since the entire weight of the calendar is hanging on a single page, this tends to create a tear in the top, which gets perpetuated each month in the new page, since the old page isn't helping take the weight due to the tear. Thankfully it hasn't actually fallen off yet, although I suspect it might if I forgot to change it for a month. Is this normal for calendars hung from the little hole in the top? Is there anything I can do to stop this, besides not hanging it until april?

The Giant
2018-11-26, 11:41 AM
No idea, but maybe if you hung it from something more like a push pin or hook, rather than a nail? Just guessing though.

Found this (https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/alt.home.repair/as0OgdqAPno) that may help. The reinforcing ideas sound more annoying to do but likely look better than hanging it from a clip.

I just hang the front cover and any previous months together on the nail in my wall.

I do that as well, but has not prevented November from ripping and having to be fixed. But I too recommend the reinforcement stickers as the standard way to solve this issue. They even come in various sizes, so I found one that was about right for the hole in the calendar.

Hello!

Great news! I've thoroughly enjoyed my digital version of the OOTS calendars! However, I’d like to inform you that the “2014 OOTSCalendar DigitalEdition v1.pdf” ’s back cover is that of the “2015_OOTSCalendar_DigitalEdition_v1.pdf” one. Would you, please, send me / make available the correct back cover / calendar?

Thanks! Can’t wait to purchase this.

Actually I have a question: I purchased Good Deeds on gumroad and downloaded it as a guest. However, I had some computer trouble and lost the download I made. I can’t find the link to download my purchase on my email. How would I be able to download the PDF of this comic again without buying it again? I can send you a screenshot of the debit or credit card purchase so you can see I already bought it.

Even if you purchased it as a guest, you should be able to download it directly from Gumroad's site. Just make an account now, using the same email you used when you purchased it. Once you're logged in, you should be able to go to the Library link and everything you've ever bought with that email will magically be waiting there for you to download.

----

Also, I have now updated the first post with the holiday ornament and new t-shirt designs.

I also forgot to mention that Ookoodook has put a whole bunch of games on sale for 66% off if you use the code BLACKFRIDAY2018. I have no idea how long that's good for, but you can see what games qualify for the discount on this page:

Great designs, Rich! Might get the "Learning is Happening!" one for my nephew.

Do you have any plans in the future to do more coffee mug designs? I suspect my significant other will be getting me the Redcloak "Revolution!" one for the holidays, but I'm still curious if any others are planned for a later date.

Alternatively, will they be relisted individually in the future? I missed 2018 before it left gumroad, and I was hoping to fill the gap in my collection.

Calendar question:
For European fans, any chance of a version starting weeks with Mondays? Maybe? Ever? One day?
I've been using the OotS calendars for years, but the weird Sunday-1st day format keeps throwing me off. :(

Hi Giant,

I've been a huge fan for years, so thank you for all the great stuff you've been producing over the years. You're awesome!

I was wondering if it was possible to get the older calenders in digital form from Gumroad. I'm just sorry I missed out on those and would love to get my hands on them for a second run.

I'm hanging the calendar from the snap hook of a lanyard (don't ask). That works pretty well, as the weight is distributed more. So try using something that isn't as slim as a nail.
Also, as others have suggested: Make sure to add the front cover to the hanging part.

No, sorry.

First, printing two different versions of the calendar, with no way of knowing in advance how many to print of each one, is not financially feasible. The calendar already teeters on the edge of whether or not it makes or loses money, depending on how many I order, due to the fact that by mid-March they will be dramatically reduced in value to most customers.

Second, I write the jokes for the bottom of the calendar to fit the amount of space that each month has before and after the days. If I were to change to a Monday-first version, it would shift all of those spaces one over, which means it wouldn't fit the characters who are telling the jokes without me rewriting them to maybe exclude one character or add another. That is far too much work for very little return, and that's why there won't be a digital version regardless of the printing issue.

And since I know the next question is why I make it the American way in the first place when the rest of the world does it differently: I sell something like five times as much stuff in the US as I do the entire rest of the world put together. There may be more people in the world who start their week on Monday, but there are more paying customers who start theirs on a Sunday.

By any chance, will there be a PDF bundle of Calendars of Years past? Would love to round out the whole collection :)

Yeah, I'll see what I can do.

If I remember correctly I was shown a different screen.
And I got an email confirming my pre-order.
The pre-ordered Item also appears in my Gumroad library (without download link, obviously): https://gumroad.com/library

If you don't yet have a Gumroad account, just create one with the same email address that you used to pre-order.

Hi Rich,

I ordered the holiday ornament, as I do every year and honestly didn't pay much attention to the order other than "Ornament? Yes. Buy!" However, when it arrived I noticed that the design has the year 2019 on it. Then I went back to cafe press and double-checked, and the image does in fact show the image with the year 2019 on it, even though your preview image in this thread shows 2018.

Might bear looking into.

Whoops, I forgot about this. They're up now; you can buy last year's calendar (https://gum.co/ootscal2018) or the previous four (https://gum.co/calbundle) (2014-2017) as a bundle, all at 30% off.

This is now live, too. Just go to the page with the calendar bundle here (https://gum.co/calbundle) and you should be able to re-download the files, with the 2014 correction. If that doesn't work, log in and check your Library.

Oof. Yeah. That's not good.

This is entirely my fault, it looks like. I originally set it to 2019 because my brain was frazzled and I had just finished working on the calendar, which uses the upcoming year's date. At some point, I noticed the problem and fixed it...and then promptly made the actual ornament from the wrong file. The preview picture here was the right file, but not indicative of what I'd given CafePress.

The upshot is, this is my error not their's. But it's an error on everyone's, and due to the way CafePress works, I can't send everyone fixed versions even if I was willing and able to absorb the cost—they just don't have an option for "send everyone who ordered this item another one." So rather than fix it and have two different versions floating around with different years, I'll just leave it as-is and maybe starting next year I'll put 2020 on it. Turn it into a New Year's Ornament. There's already a gap for 2012's battle ornament anyway.

Anyway, sorry about that.

Every year, I think about it, and every year, I realize I don't have any characters that represent Law without being more Good or Evil than Lawful. The most hardcore Lawful character in the strip is probably Malack, but he's so definitely Evil that it would change the meaning of the shirt. Same goes for Tarquin or Gontor or, on the other side, Celia or Durkon. After that, you've got, what, Jones & Rodriguez? Eh.

At some point, I'll either have a new LN character or maybe I'll think of an angle on an existing Lawful character that doesn't get overshadowed by their Good/Evil axis. Until then, it'll have to wait.

Oh! I almost forgot why I came here in the first place:

The physical calendars are running about two days behind schedule but they're on the truck heading to Ookoodook right now. They should arrive tomorrow, and shipping notifications could start as early as tomorrow night and go through the weekend.

EDIT: There are also approximately 135 physical calendars that are not already spoken-for, so it's almost certainly going to sell out this year, probably before Christmas. If you want one, you should place your order now.

Just another update:

Everyone should be getting shipping emails today-ish, with the calendars hitting the mail before the end of business in Houston (where Ookoodook is). You can now download your PDF calendars if you pre-ordered, and if you want to buy a PDF you can download it immediately.

Also, there's about 50 paper calendars left before we sell out, so if you still want that and were waiting for whatever reason, now's the time.

Has anyone getting physical copies gotten their shipping notification yet? I haven't seen anything. :( Once again made the mistake this year of forgetting to separate out the preorder from all the other stuff I wanted to buy, so the whole order is waiting on the calendar, which may be part of the delay...

I have already received the shipping notification.

I got my shipping notification, but USPS tracking still says "pre-shipment".

Wasn't it last year that a box of calendars were left somewhere and never actually delivered to USPS? :smalleek:

I received my shipping information email yesterday. Still in the "pre-shipment" phase.

Last year I got mine before the tracker moved off of 'pre-shipment', apparently because the software can't keep up this time of year.

If they are presorted by zip-code they may not be individually scanned where dropped off but thrown together into the appropriate long-distance bin. Might not get scanned until they need more specific routing at a downstream facility.

Ookoodook sold out of the printed calendar at some point during the day today, so it's now PDF or nothing if you still want it.

Is there any chance for a second print run, or is my only recourse the digital version? Thanks!

Digital only, most likely. Calendars are incredibly time-specific items, and without even knowing the scales required, Id bet that a second print would result in a lot of unsold stock that would at best sell only at heavily discounted rates well into 2019 and beyond, and at worst be a reminder of why not to second print calendars.

Given the lead times for these things (and the fact we're in a holiday period), it might even be the case that a second print run wouldn't produce anything until well into the New Year!

Oh for sure! I'm just saying I would still buy it at listed cost. I like having an OOTS calendar on my wall.

If you can find a few hundred like-minded people who'll guarantee they'll buy the thing then maybe the Giant could do something. :smalltongue:

(Could you not just get the PDF one and get it printed out?).

Wouldn't that be great? Rally up all the late shoppers like that! lol

That's the plan right now, PDF and print. Just not sure where to go to get it printed with any sort of size and quality, as well as copyright issues that could be there for the print shop (not that printing a PDF for personal use would be a violation by my understanding of copyright, unless there is some really restrictive license agreement, but the print shop has their own concerns, etc, etc, etc). I've never tried to get a calendar printed from a PDF before, so I might also be over thinking it.

If you live near a Staples store, they usually (at least in my area) will print anything you give them with little or no questions asked. You'll pay a fee for the job, of course, but it shouldn't be too bad.

If they (or anyone) give you issues about copyright, I believe Rich usually has a disclaimer on PDFs that give permission to print them for personal use. One calendar certainly qualifies as "personal use."

Woo hoo! My calendars just arrived! Thanks, Rich! They look awesome! (Well, from the cursory inspection I gave them. Didn't want to look at the back too carefully, as I don't want to spoil the comics.)

Got my calendar too, and I love it! It has joined the others. I keep wanting to take them apart and frame each month but I don't have the heart to do it (plus I'd need two of each calendars if I don't want to miss all the calendar jokes).

I don't actually use them as calendars, so the "Sunday first" hasn't bothered me.

My tired old eyes can barely even see them, but as a lifelong Dragonlance fan I want to thank Rich heartily for depicting Vaarsuvious holding the Staff of Magius.

So... since I purchased a calendar back around Thanksgiving, got a shipping confirmation on December 17th which still shows as Pre-Shipment at USPS, and I've not gotten a response from Ookoodook to my inquiries, how concerned should I be?

Lord Torath
2019-02-08, 11:00 AM
Concerned enough to contact Ookoodook about it, I'd say. I'd start with the Contact link on their website, and if that gets no response, try PMing ApeGamer (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/member.php?9689-apegamer) here at the Playground.

IIRC, that happened last year too. Next winter when the new calendar goes up there's a very high chance a digital bundle of all old calendars will also go up.

March. A new month. And new information! The Creature in the Darkness has a waist! Quick! To the MitD (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?578378-MitD-XII-This-Space-Intentionally-Left-Dark) thread! The Wylie Coyote reference was fun.

Anyone else scrupulously avoiding looking at future months? Or is it just me?

No, I too do that. I consider buying the calendar the equivalent of paying for an extra strip per month.

Unfortunately, months like this one tend to be spoiled for me in advance by people who did immediately rush to the MitD thread to let me know about the joke.

A lot of people seem to do that. I'm the opposite: I looked at all the months when I got the calendar, then I put it away on my bookshelf with the other ones.

Seconded. Except, after the first physical calendar that I got and never actually used, I just get the digital versions now. Let someone else who'll actually use it get the hard copy instead.

Probably smart, but I have this idea that someday I will take the different illustrations and frame them. It's up for debate if I ever will.
I do buy the digital version too, though.
