CHAPTER 1
~~~~~~~~~~~~
a FRIEND IN NEED
It's a busy night at the Yawning Portal - one of the most popular taverns in the city of Waterdeep, among adventurers, at least. The taproom is dominated by the titular Yawning Portal - a massive well that descends into the depths of Undermountain, the massive dungeon complex that lies beneath the city.
You've gathered in the tavern to celebrate the formation of a new adventuring party. You were introduced to several fellow would-be heroes, explorers, or thieves (depending on who you're asking) by Meloon Wardragon, a veteran adventurer who works for Force Grey, the city of Waterdeep's special operatives adventuring force. You've recently finished your first excursion as a team, and are now celebrating with a hearty round of food and drink at the Yawning Portal, owned by the gruff former adventurer Durnan.
You sit around a sturdy wooden table lit by a brightly burning candle and littered with plates cleared of food and half-drained tankards. The sounds of gamblers yelling and drunken adventurers singing bawdy songs nearly drown out the off-key strumming of a young bard three tables over. What are you doing?
"Think of the fallout, if horses could fly!" Suraelia sings along to the finish of the bawdy song it seems like half the room had been singing along to. Still laughing, she takes another gulp of her ale. At least, it was probably hers. It was to her right anyway.
"I could get used to this I think." She remarks to the others, meaning adventuring. "Not quite what I thought it would be like."
"The Yawning Portal! It's the coolest place in the whole city! And you guys are just.. like, real adventurers! And I guess I am? It's so crazy!"
Clink expresses his laughter through a horse's whinny enjoying the amount of viviality around them. When a server comes by, the Kenku literally echoes one of his newfound companions, "Uh, another pint please.". When the conversation turns to some of those new to the city, Clink adds his own admiration for Waterdeep. A man's voice attempting to hawk his wares quietly shouts, "This is Waterdeep, my fiend! If you can't find it here, it can't be found!". Waterdeep was a city of many stories and personalities, of lights and colors, of highs and lows.
All of a sudden, both your conversation and the background chatter of the tavern are eclipsed by the sound of the front door slamming open. A group of figures in dark clothing rush into the taproom. Yagra Stonefist, a tavern regular who some of you are acquainted with, stands to face the newcomers. She's met by a shout: “Ya pig! Like killin' me mates, does ya?” Then the seven-foot-tall half-orc is hit by a wild, swinging punch from the group's leader: a male human whose shaved head is covered with eye-shaped tattoos. Four other humans stand behind him, ready to jump into the fray. Yagra cracks her knuckles, roars, and leaps at the tattooed figure—but before you can see if blood is drawn, a crowd of spectators clusters around the brawl. What do you do?
You make your way through (or more correctly, over) the crowd of spectaors, clambering up onto your table and jumping across the other tables in the room until you approach the front of the surging masses. You see that the scene has devolved into a full-on brawl: Yagra has the man with the eye tattoos in a half nelson with one arm and is punching him in the face repeatedly with her other hand. The man does not look to be in good shape. The four other darkly clothed men are warily circling the half orc - it seems that they're looking for an opportunity to tackle and dogpile her without crushing their leader. Yagra roars a wordless but fearsome battlecry - she seems too invested in the brawl to respond to your shout.
2018-12-08, 08:41 PM
Well if Yagra's Suraelia's friend then she might be Aislynn's friend too. Someday. Once she's had a chance to prove herself! Anyway, she wasn't just going to to let a bunch of guys team up on one person, no matter how big she was.
"Save some for me," she yells, as she struggles to squeeze through the crowd, "nobody messes with the friends of Force Grey!"
You hear murmurs from the spectators as you invoke the name of Force Grey. Bystanders turn and look at you, and many of them step aside to clear your path to the brawl at the center of the crowd. You make your way to the front of the thronging masses, and lay eyes upon the same scene Suraelia did moments earlier. You can see your teammate perched atop a nearby table, poised to leap into the fray.
He imitated the shouting of various guards, "Alright, that's enough there!" and "Make way for the guard!" in hopes that the fighters might stop if they were to be arrested, but wouldn't otherwise interfere. The tattooed man, Krentz, grunts from underneath Yagra. Aislynn and Rick, you hear the telltale sound of steel being drawn, and let your magicks and arrow fly, respectively. They both connect, and Krentz cries out in pain and flails about wildly with his scimitar. The two men who were cowed by Rick's threat earlier move to accost Aislynn, each of them also drawing blades to attack.
I'm not sure if we're using the optional flanking rule or not. So I'm just rolling with the advantage from it and we can just ignore it if we're not using it. I don't care either way personally, just figured it didn't make sense to wait to ask and get an answer at this particular point.
If somehow the first strike magically KOs the first guy, the second would go to the guy south of Aislynn. (Unless that's not a foe? (Not 100% sure since these guys don't have labels.) In which case the guy next to Yagra I suppose.)
Clink, you scramble through the crowd, stepping nimbly over the unconscious body of one of the humans, and your mace makes a resounding thud as you hit the man in the stomach, winding him. The man turns to face the two of you, a manic resolve glinting in his eyes like that of a cornered animal. However, that glint quickly dissolves into a look of pure panic as he catches sight of something behind you and screams in terror.
Shouts of alarm begin to ring out from all around the taproom as a hulking creature climbs up out of the shaft in the room's center—a monster with warty green skin, a tangled nest of wiry black hair, a long, carrot-shaped nose, and bloodshot eyes. As it bares its yellow teeth and howls, you can see that a half-dozen bat-like creatures are attached to its body, with three more circling above it like flies. Everyone in the tavern reacts in fear except for the barkeep, Durnan, who simply shouts, “Troll!” He pulls a sword out from under the bar and vaults over the bar, towards the monster.
Aislynn, you weave your eldritch magics into a curse which you place upon the troll, and then attempt to follow up with a blast of force. However, the troll's leathery hide seems to absorb your magic.
Rick, you climb atop the table next to you to give yourself a clear view of all the monsters who have entered the tavern. You take aim at one of the stirges nearest you and shoot it out of the sky with a single arrow, causing the mosquito-like creature to pop in a splatter of blood and gastric fluid.
Yagra muscles through the doorway and attempts to tackle the fleeing man to the ground. "I have this dastard! Go help Durnan with the beasties!"
Clink turns and shudders at the ghastly sight of the bursting blood-filled bug. He reaches for the holy symbol at his side and begins the proper motions to confer a blessing to the three capable fighters who seemed ready to charge into the fray. The sound of coins exchanging hands leaves his beak and seems to amplify through the room for a moment as he casts.
Casting Bless on Suraelia, Ivor, and Horst.
As the warmth of divine blessing fills Ivor, Horst, and Suraelia, the monsters that emerged from the well begin to wreak havoc.
"Oi, beastie, lookie 'ere!" You hear Durnan's voice rise above the clamor of fear in the tavern. Glancing over, you can see that he's gesturing to the troll with an open hand. He appears to have cut himself with his greatsword, and a rivulet of blood marks his palm. The troll, smelling the fresh blood, shambles towards him, flailing with its fearsome claws before lunging forward with a bite.
Meanwhile, the six stirges that had been attached to the troll languidly detach themselves and drift back into the well. Their bloated bodies and slow movements give off the impression that they are returning home to digest their meals in a quieter and darker place that a tavern taproom in broad daylight.
However, the remaining two striges are not so easily deterred. They seek a meal before returning home. Both flutter towards Durnan when he cuts himself, drawn by the scent of blood, but they quickly change course when the troll barrels towards the barkeep in order to stay out of its way. They flit into the thronging crowd at the front of the tavern. One bites at Suraelia while another attempts to attach itself to Horst.
"Don't worry everyone, we can handle this!" Suraelia says to encourage the party as well as to reassure anyone else in the area as she then takes tries to cut down the stirges.
She attacks the stirge next to her first and if she kills it she moves on to attack the one near Horst. If she kills both she uses her remaining movement to get as close to the troll as she can.
"Aw c'mon weird ancestor magic, don't fail me now!"
With her plea, Aislynn feels the fury of her ancestor surge forth again. This time, her eyes briefly turn black as a baleful curse is laid upon the troll, and she launches another eldritch blast.
Bonus action: Hexblade's Curse. Aislynn deals +2 damage on all attacks against the troll and crits on a 19-20. Standard: Eldritch Blast. [roll0][roll1]+[roll2]
