Sequestered in your classroom in Your School, an air of boredom has crept in from seemingly nowhere. The day of your math teacher's lecture on polynomials has "finally arrived", as she claims. You probably aren't actually interested in polynomials, but maybe the chance of getting to sit in relative peace while the teacher talks has you at ease. Maybe you'll get some work done? Probably not, first period classes always suck.
It's still early in the day, sun straining to glisten through the frosted windows and stilted blinds of the school's far side in its slow ascent through the heavens on a largely clouded over day in December. The staff of Your School are notoriously quick to turn on the heat, however, and you are pretty sure they don't need to set it to "boiling hot" when it's still pretty cozy outside.
With a quick look, you can spot your various friends, acquaintances, etc. Somehow, these classes don't shift students around too much. Casey and, of course, Mercedes, Gorri and Stat, Raine, Wako, Lance and Catrina, Neville, Tiera, Gazella, Chris, Ralph, Suzy... though the last three, as usual, seem off in their own world, hogging the back corner also as usual. There's a couple of other students, but you don't really know their names - they seem to be a rather nebulous, faceless bunch that shift seats and never answer questions or cause a ruckus.
Somehow, you three were lucky enough to end up immediately adjacent to each other. The seat immediately behind Casey, however, is empty. It'd normally be Sadie's, but she doesn't seem to be here today. Perhaps she's sick? You might be glad for this, as most of the students are, or you might be uncharacteristically worried for her.
The teacher has her back to you, drawing several complicated mathonomical expressions on the whiteboard with the squeakiest marker she can find. Perhaps if you are quiet, you could sneak in conversation with your friends...? Or you could try texting. That usually works.
