Let's face it, Dungeons & Dragons hates monster PCs. How do y'all fix this when you're playing yours?

EDIT: I should probably specify I play 5e

If someone wants to play a monster and I am okay with it, I usually just change the LA or HD until it's roughly balanced. If an ability is way out of whack and I'm still allowing it I might just change the ability.

This thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?569969-The-LA-assignment-thread-V-Escape-from-LA) and its predecessors have been popular for 3.5, though, so I guess I would reference those if a player asked for a monster race. It doesn't come up often, and there are some monster races that are pretty strong out of the box anyway, so if players want those, they usually don't need changing.

The ones released for 5e are decent enough. Or are you thinking more of playing Dragon, Troll and Naga rather than Centaur and Lizardmen.

Pretty much this. If Wizard 10 and Fighter 14 are balanced at your table, play that, if balance is what matters to you. Balance for what works at your table, be it races, classes, items, spells, whatever.
