I noticed that the hellbred in FCII seem to have a lot of characteristics that WotC is saying that races will have in 4e:
1. As CL/HD go up, they gain more/improved abilities.
2. You have a choice of different options as you gain CL/HD.

What do you think?

Already been done with certain MM things. Especially templates. Half-Fey in Fiend Folio got spell-like abilities with almost every other level, with some where you could choose which one was used each morning.

That's monster templates, though; the hellbred get all that as an LA +0 humanoid race. I think it's a strong possibility that it was a covert test for 4e race ideas.

The racial abilities of the Dragonborn of bahamut also improve with HD.

Flight for Raptorans.

Templates were probably the initial trigger for this, leading to the Raptorans and Dragonborn, and evolving to 4E Racial Power.
