My players are level 3 and fairly inexperienced at pathfinder. We are in the first part of the Kingmaker campaign.
I want them to come across group of hobgoblins arguing in a forest over the best way to cook this giant egg they found. (a little larger than a basketball).

I'm looking for ideas on fun creatures to give them. But nothing that can fly. Any fun baby monster stories?

Owlbear cub? Wait, that could fly until the bear part gets heavy.

Crocodile? Those seem to be nice, but their eggs are not that large. Crocodile mothers could help crack the shells of their children, and if their children does not completely develop, they will eat them.

“Catch the red dot? I AM THE RED DOT!”

And the other colors of dot as well, but that’s less funny.

Tarrasque don’t fly. They eat a lot though compared to other pets.

A baby hydra would be awesome. And adorable.

A darkmantle! It's cute, affectionate, and surprisingly smart, and happily bonds with the PCs upon hatching.

Of course, it doesn't quite get that its friends don't have Blindsight, and may decide to 'protect' them with some magical darkness at inopportune times.

A satyr egg. No, satyrs don't come from eggs. Why was it in an egg?

Creatures with Chaotic alignments can do whatever they want.

It's a Faberge egg. It will hatch into an effigy creature of something glamorous like a half-sapphire dragon peacock, or possibly an animated Carnival float.

Fwiw owlbears do feature somewhat prominently in the first few books of the Kingmaker AP.

Personally, I've always wanted a pet Bulette.

Add a twist, make the egg a mimic who likes taking the shape of egg shells. Many fun ways for the party to discover that its not really an egg, and many fun scenes you can do as a DM.

That sir, is a beautifully evil plan. I can just imagine the faces of the pcs when they discover it.

My SO came up with a good idea.

Its a big egg right? Well, out of it hatches a large (as in beachball sized), but perfectly ordinary baby blackbird.

Its non-magical. Its not intelligent. Its a baby. But the party doesnt know that.

Hopefully, they will cart it around, feeding it, taming it, hoping for it to grow into something cool. It does not. What it DOES do is squawk at inappropriate times, giving them away in stealth, or upsetting some animal they are attempting to handle.

The obvious choice would be a dragon.

The less obvious choice would be an Ankheg, a Lizardman, or a baby Aboleth.

An ancient one / elder evil. After all their hard work nurturing the egg and making sure it hatches... It turns out to be a world destroying monstrosity. Plot hook!

Not really a serious suggestion, but what about an opossum inside a pumpkin?

A Dragonborn of Bahamut (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/iw/20060105b).

Maybe name it Mork, if you want to do a Robin Williams tribute.

He can even have been an Orc before becoming a Dragonborn, and therefore be Mork from Orc :^)

A baby triceratops that size will be cute and interesting. A year or two later it might be large enough to fight a little. It should become full-sized when they are a high enough level that it's a reasonable mount for one of them.

but it loses the fun shenanigans you can do with a mimic the shape of an egg. And the mimic thats the shape of an egg can still be your pet. How about a mimic egg, that hatches, but the players are too busy to notice the mimic hatching, and so the mimic then takes the shape of an egg. When the players come check their egg, they will see that it hatched... into another egg!

What about an intelligent egg that hatches into another egg?And then another, and another, and another, each smaller than the one before. The PCs could make matryoshka omelets for a few days.

Perhaps a yu lung? It's an eastern flavor dragon found in OA. It will eventually gain flight... after a couple decades... probably.

The goblins and PCs believe it’s an egg, given its size and shape.

Whichever side ends up keeping it realize that nothing’s hatching and a few nights later, the party may regret not leaving this “egg” in goblin hands.

For you see, it’s a gem. Egg shaped because its owner, a Moonbeast (MM2), left it around as such creatures are wont to do and their alien mind must’ve found the egg shape rather fetching for a gem.

Now it wants it back. It will stalk whoever is in possession of the egg shaped gem and visit mad inducing pain on the poor fool that has it... and anyone close to him.
