View Full Version : Player Help Building Karna(Lancer) from Fate Apocrypha

Heya,

So basically I got my self balls deep in the muck and said I'd be playing Karna from Fate Apocrypha but after weeks of research boy oh boy is a he hard to build.

The issue within this being that the DM said we're allowed to absolutely break her and play borderline broken cheese (but like the proper mouldy horrible type) because she will be. Which is great, for my friends who've played for nearly 5-10 years but not me... having only played for 3 months. As long its only core printed books with no home brew. We're allowed to multi class and we start at level 12. No magic items as they'll be randomly rolled.

Overall, I'm out of my element here so any help on how to build Karna would be great because I wanna keep up with the vets I'm playing with. I know I wont do him full justice, because a Demi-God is strong. The massive reduction to damage he has with insane agility and big hit spear attacks on top of the nuke like fire explosions is a lot to cover.

So far I thought some sort of Sorcerer Paladin Fighter? I don't mind having like lots of classes, I can keep up there, but building him is insane.

Thank you for any help I do get. Got a week or so til the game. We haven't rolled stats but I'm allowed to use point buy to get a prototype sorta build til we roll.

I think you should go at least 13 in sword bard and then take some levels in battle master. The reason why you should go the route of the bard is it gives you access to Mirage Arcane which can be used to replicate his noble phantasm by turning the terrain molten. It also grants you some awesome/thematic arcane secrets like destruction wave, haste, erupting earth, etc. Also, mobile flourish is pretty badass due to pushing your enemy back with an attack.

Battlemaster is all around great for a melee fighter and can get you some extra attacks or disarms with bonus damage. Another viable option is hexblade if you don't want to be too mad with your stats and gain some pretty useful combat spells that you could use with your bard slots.

I'd also definitely take mobile for one of your feats to avoid opportunity attacks. It also works very well with haste.

So to me there's a few notable things that stick out about Fate/Apoc Karna.

Golden armor that makes him 'invincible'
He can absolutely nuke anything he wants to
Fire, lots of it.
He uses up resources like a madman
He's just really badass in general.
He's a holy roller who kept his word no matter what.


So yeah. Clear sorcadin, imo.

Here's how I would spec it:

Vhuman Devotion Paladin 6/ Phoenix Sorcerer 6
Cantrips: Greenflame Blade, Firebolt, control flames (for style points), Prestigiditation
Feats:Warcaster, +2 CHA, +2 CHA (elemental adept for style points)
metamagic: Quicken, Empower


Golden armor is just normal plate +a shield + the shield spell + shield of faith (sometimes) for 27 AC. Alternately, you use absorb elements instead of shield when you get hit with magic damage.
For the up-close-personal-nuke, you've got smite. For long range nukes, you've got mantle of flame + upcast scorching ray. 5th level scorching ray hits 6 times for 12d6+30 = 72 damage. You can also just chuck out empowered fireballs or fire wall or other such fantastic spells.
You're a paladin-sorcerer. Blowing through resources is what you do.
You're pretty badass! Use your channel divinity for a whopping + to your attack roll, hit people running away from you with GFB, have crazy high AC.... sounds good!
Devotion paladin. Check on the Holy Roller box.
