I don't want a generator...I want something that looks good and lets me design dungeons/inns etc myself.
~~I would love to add visual elements and draw on a bank of art to color the dungeon. I also need to be able to add text and lettering to the map.

It doesn't matter if this is free or not. I really want/need a tool like this.

what do y'all prefer?

I've just been using Roll20. It doesn't have good pre-set art, but you can upload anything you want... which means you have access to any tile pieces you can google up.

I'm poking around the site but I'm not seeing a dungeon designer, not even in the tools section. Image search with Bing brings up a LOT of tile sets.

I do it in Roll20 itself. In the same interface that you run the actual games, not a separate tool.

You could try Dungeonographer. I've mostly used another tool from the same people called Hexographer for world maps but this looks similarly well designed.

I've found a tutorial on YouTube that may help you figure it out. Hope this helps

I really like Dungeon Painter Studio.
It's available on steam.

Here's a quick video of what it does.

edit:

the export feature of the program has support for most of the online gaming sites, so you don't need to worry about sizing or pixel issues.

Roll20 lets you drag images from its image directory onto the main map, for use as various details like furnishings.

The broader map, the shape of the rooms etc, needs something else unless you want to use Roll20's selection of pre-made rooms. I use Mipui, a mapping program, along with an image editor like paint.net to generate maps with textures I like. They look pretty solid if I do say so myself.

With Dungeon Painter Studio, I adjusted the grids on my maps to match Roll20's grid size, so things match up well. First time I exported a DPS map, there was a lot of issues with Roll20 not aligning properly. Also, if you have a free Roll20 account, and are limited by upload size, you may have to keep an eye on your file size with DPS and scale down the resolution, or break it down into smaller sections that you upload and reconstruct.

I'm seconding Dungeonographer. It's a download, and the free trial is pretty limited, with a vastly larger tileset if you get the commercial version. Similarly Hexographer, a tool by the same people for similar purposes pairs nicely with it for overland maps.

I like inkarnate (https://inkarnate.com/), the free version is pretty limited, but the pro isn't all that expensive - especially if you have a ton of maps you can do all in a month and cancel the sub until you need it again.

I've never had issues with roll20/DPS.
Just configure the map in roll20 to have the same squarexsquare size, drop the map in and pull to the corner!

How far into "or not" do you wish to go? It sounds like you want a drafting/ modeling program. Ever heard of Revit?

I've done a number of maps and boards for other games in AutoCAD, but nothing for D&D yet. My DM doesn't use maps. I'm thinking about taking commissions.

I haven't used it enough to know if I like it, and some of its features are paid-only, but DungeonFog (https://www.dungeonfog.com/) is worth taking a look at.

Accomplishes the same thing! Haha.

I just wanted to bring up that there may be one or two extra tinkers needed to make DPS and Roll20 work nicely. If someone just went from one to the other, they may wonder why it doesn't line up.

Hi! Mipui author here. Combining Mipui maps with Paint.net for textures sounds neat, would you mind sharing an example of how it looks?

I used a trial of Dungeon Builder, and the results were of my liking.

That looks great, but DAMN that price tag.

Yeah, it is indeed very expensive. I seem to remember that during the Kickstarter phase one of the rewards was the program for 30 bucks or so. Should have taken advantage of the opportunity.
