I was just starting to stat up the piscoloth for 5th ed., and to get it right I went back to the original Planescape description and stats from AD&D.

And I realized this creature pretty much already exists in the game. It's the chuul!

Not only do they look identical, they also have the paralyzing tentacles.

Well, this does make the conversion pretty easy. Just take the chuul, give it the standard yugoloth abilities, and bump it up to CR 7.
But I am still somewhat disappointed. I really quite like chuuls and thought they are one of the best original creatures from 3rd edition. I wanted to have them both in my campaign, but players probably would immediately spot the similarities. If they even assume they are dealing with two different creatures.

No offense, but what's your point with this thread? I'm a little confused as to what this is about. If you're saying that's a thing, sure. What about it?

Well, shrimp is shrimp.

That was also my reaction when I first saw the troglodyte in the MM. Didn't I already read the slaad entry?

Edit: If you are going to use both, how about making that confusion a plot point? One or more piscoloths have become the leaders of a group of chuuls, under the pretense of being special chuuls sent by an aboleth.
