View Full Version : If you could start with 20 in any TWO stats, what character would you make?

For the other four stats lets assume you have 10 points to buy with. That would get you 14, 10, 8, 8 or 12, 10, 10, 10 for example before racial boosts. Oddly this actually promotes uncommon race combos. I expect to see a lot of +2 Con races.

Personally I would probably make a Lizardfolk Barbarian with 20 Str, 20 Dex, 16 Con, 8 Int, 10 Wis, 8 Cha or Lizardfolk Monk with 10 Str, 20 Dex, 16 Con, 8 Int, 20 Wis, 8 Cha

Monk. Invest in Wis and Con, and add Dex as you go, allowing you to take more feats like Mobile, Mage Slayer, or Elven Accuracy that you would otherwise struggle as you try to balance Con, Dex and Wis as a Stat.

having 2 maxed stats at level one makes paladin and monk pretty attractive, since you don't have to delay stat progression to get the feats you want.

a 20/16/20/x/x/x Eladrin Barbarian for the typical beat stuff up playstyle but a free teleport when you need it would also be pretty cool, and you get to take a bunch of feats here as well.

Any sort of "I'm a caster but I want to run in with a sword" build would also get a lot from just having starting 20's, and lower HD classes can take more con when they're out of feats they want.

I would do a mountain dwarf eldritch knight/wizard multiclass. Max int, max str, 16 con.

I'd probably go Battle Master. Enjoy the game on easy mode with my +5 HP per level and ridiculous saving throws at range. I can afford to grab all the feats I can dream of, including things like Crossbow Expert and Sharpshooter. Maybe grab Tough, Lucky, Medium Armor Master. Enjoy my 18 AC and being able to shoot people at point blank range. Grab a level into Hexblade for Hex, because why not?

Ooh, I would probably play a Barbarian-Stone Sorcerer multiclass because that stuff is MAD as hell and having two 20's in there solves a lot of issues. That would be the dream.

Hey ;)

For a single class, Monk would be my intuitive choice, with Paladin possibly next, or Ranger.
For multiclass, I'd enjoy a Bladesinger Wizard with anything, but particularly Moon Druid (Mage Armor + max INT bonus to AC and concentration is tasty) or Monk (absolutely marvelous)...

Or a Barb/Monk/Rogue/Druid heavy multiclass
Or a crazy multiclass of 7/8 classes with just one dip on Hexblade Warlock (so CHA is primary) and CON the other 20 (using racial bumps and possibly one ASI to make sure I can cover whatever attribute requirement may arise), like my cherished Cantripper that I'd like to play (objective: have as many cantrips as possible while still having 4 SP for Subtle and either Quicken or Extend, as well as a decent array of 2nd level spells).

Elven hexblade

10,14,20,11,10,20 or 10,14,20,10,11,20 after racials, then Elven Accuracy to take wis or int to 12. Mix in another 3 or 4 feats, since everything you need is capped, or take one more point of int for ritual caster (wizard) because cool

Edit: would do pally mix, but can’t, well, I could, but that would defeat the awesomeness of soooo many feats. sigh

There aren't even rules for what I'd get back for selling down those 20s to 18s or 16s...

A fun idea for a Deathknight inspired PC comes to mind.

6 Cavalier Fighter/14 Fiend Bladelock Hill Dwarf.

Str: 20
Dex: 10
Con: 16
Int: 8
Wis: 9
Cha: 20

Fighting Style: Dueling

Level 4 ASI: Polearm Master
Level 6 ASI: Sentinal
Level 10 ASI: Inspiring Leader
Level 14 ASI: Resilient (Wis)
Level 18 ASI: Lucky

Invocations: Agonizing Blast, Improved Pact Weapon, Lifedrinker, Misty Visions, Beguiling Influence, Tomb of Levistus.

Weapons: Spear and shield.

Cantrips: Eldritch Blast, Minor Illusion, Mage Hand, Prestidigitation.

Mystic Arcanums: Mass Suggestion, Forcecage.

And a lot of flexibility in spell choices, as this isn't a character that relies on darkness/shadow of moil.

Lizardfolk Barbarian, start with maxed STR/DEX and rely on the 18 AC from Natural Armor (13 + DEX) until ASI's can bump your CON to 18, at which point the barbs unarmored defense becomes better.

Playing on the "I am so very tough" theme, a Hill Dwarf Dragon Sorcerer with 20 Con and 20 Cha would be pretty formidable. 13 hp at first level, 11 at each level afterwards, and you have powerful casting. If I had a decent Strength or Dex I might be tempted to take GFB and dabble in melee.

Half-Orc Bladesinger Wizard with 20 Dex and Int

Half-Orc Swashbuckler Rogue with 20 Dex and Cha

Half-Orc Hex/Bladelock with 20 Con and Cha

Mountain Dwarf Abjurer with 20 Con and Int with Heavily Armored, Heavy Armor Master, Tough, Durable, and Dwarven Fortitude

Goliath War/Life/Tempest/Forge/Nature Cleric with 20 Con and Wis with Warcaster, Res(Con), Heavy Armor Master, Sentinel, and Magic Initiate for Booming Blade

Dwarf Storm Sorc/Tempest Cleric with 20 Wis and Cha. Take all the Lightning/Thunder spells and cantrips

Lizardfolk Lore Bard with 20 Dex and Cha. This character sounds ironically awesome. Take Inspiring Leader, Magic Initiate Warlock probably.

I'm going full on puss in Boots. 20 dex and 20 cha. Be the more charming than the most charming rogue ever.

Or 14 strength 20 dex 20 wisdom aracockra ranger. Or ooh. Death domain cleric. I am death from above incarnate.

The same classes I would normally choose, they would just start out better.

Wizard with a 20 Int is always fun to start out with. The other 20 could go into Dex or Con.

A Rogue with a 20 Dex and a 20 Cha is super. Starting out with +5 mods in your favorite skills is always great.

I think Half-Elf
a Pair of 20's and 10 points gets 20/20/13+1/11+1/10/8+2 for CHA.

Either a Fighter 1/Wizard X with INT 20 / CON 20 / STR 14 / WIZ 12 / DEX 10 / CHA 10.
First Level as Fighter then Wizard all the way; gives you Heavy Armour

Or a Rogue with possibly a Cleric dip.
WIZ 20 / DEX 20 / CON 14 / INT 12 / STR 10 / CHA 10.
Skilled with Rapier and Bow; AC 17 in Studded Leather AC 19 with a Shield (from Cleric)
Could be AC 20 with Forge Domain or Knowledge Domain for even more of a Skill Monkey.

Human Conquest Paladin X/Hexblade 1 - 14 Str / 10 Dex / 20 Con / 8 Int 8 Wis / 20 Cha

Pickup Heavy Armor Master at level 1 for 15 Str to wear plate
Sentinel at Level 4, PAM at level 8, GWM at level 12

You'll be a high damage super tank with lots of battlefield control

I'm thinking paladin, because they get a lot of benefit out of maxing both Cha and their combat stat, and they also have a lot of feats they'd like to have. Usually, there's no room for all of that, but with starting 20s, there could be.

Either ... a Monk or a Bard.

I've always wanted to play a half-orc bard that sings dark war chants, so this could be really cool. 20 CHA/DEX (since the bard class really wants dex over strength), 14+1 CON (and take resilient con at level 4). Probably go Valor Bard or something like that.

Alternatively, I could play a wood elf barbarian with 20 STR/CON, 14+2 DEX, etc. Probably go totem to really hone in on that "uncivilized/at home in nature" feel.

Firbolg Hexblade Bladelock3/Ancients PaladinX switch-hitter

STR 14+1
DEX 10
CON 20
INT 8
WIS 8+2
CHA 20

Polearm Master, Sentinel, Great Weapon Master

Devil's Sight, Agonizing Blast

A Champion of Nature, equally adept at swinging a 2H polearm in melee or striking with Eldritch Blast at range. A more militaristic take on the typical Firbolg.

Or Mountain Dwarf Monk1/Moon DruidX

STR 8+2
DEX 20
CON 14+2
INT 10
WIS 20
CHA 8

Mobile, Alert, Sentinel

Picture a smelly, naked, feral dwarf who attacks with his teeth and bare hands when challenged. He was literally raised by wolves. Like a surlier "Mowgli of the Mountains". When pressed, he casts spells and turns into animals. He greatly prefers hanging out with animals to people.

Wood Elf Zealot Barbarian.
STR 20
DEX 16
CON 20
INT 8
WIS 12
CHA 8

Start with 18 AC at level one. Take wood elf magic at level 4 to get pass without trace. Sneaky, fast, and swoll. Zealot of Obad-Hai. Really passionate about nature, but in a pretty simple-minded way.

Alternately,

Centaur Kensei Monk

STR 10
DEX 20
CON 14
INT 8
WIS 20
CHA 8

You start with 20 AC, that goes up to 22 AC with agile parry before magic items. The centaur race lets you move ludicrously fast and hit hard. Your high AC lets you really just do whatever you want here for development.

Yaun-Ti Pureblood Bear Barbarian
20 Strength
14 Dex
20 Con
9 Int
10 Wis
10 Cha

The Yaun-Ti resistance to spells helps you survive the Hold Person, fear, and other mental based spells. You resist pretty much all damage, and you have ASI to use Resilient or boost mental stats. Good luck stopping him.

Hill dwarf devotion paladin 6 / lore bard 14
20, 10, 15, 10, 10, 20.
Resilient (Con), shield master, and whatever else you want for feats.
Mega saves, big smiting, making the most of shield master, lots of hp, you name it.

... use a lizard folk and have a 23 natural AC with barb ...

You have some confusion over how armor classes work. They don't stack, they are a Cartesian OR. So as a lizardfolk Barbarian you get the following choices for armor.
Medium/Light Armor + Dexterity (limited to armor max per the table) + Shield - Normal
Dexterity + Constitution + Shield - Barbarian unarmored AC calc
OR
13 + Dexterity + Shield - Lizardfolk natural armor.

There is no combining these together.

Ranged rogue with 20 dex and con. Race could literally be whatever worked flavorwise, or that had a feature I wanted to try. Then just take feats: sharpshooter, crossbow expert, tough, mobile, skulker, whatever lol

I’d go for a gnome moon Druid. You can max CHA and WIS, have a high INT, too. Take good social encounter skills, and knowledge skills.

Wild Shape gives you good combat options and mitigates the weaker physical stats. Your saves for all the mental stats will be pretty decent, which is nice.

Hexblade with 20 CON and CHA, dump STR and INT, divide the points between WIS and DEX. If VHuman, start with PAM and use spear and shield.

Halfling/Gnome/Goblin/Kobold Barbarians with 20 Str and Con running around using a versatile weapon in two hands sounds pretty awesome if not too obvious. Gnomes in particular with their advantage on mental saves would be epic.

Another idea is to go vhuman Fighter and start 20 Str and Con and grab PAM, Sentinel, Warcaster, and Spell Sniper with Booming Blade and spam Booming Blade with your reaction. Would you even want Sentinel? It gives you more chances of pulling off the reaction attack, but you don't really want to force your approaching enemies to stop. You want them to take that extra movement damage. This build would be up and running at level 8 though(or 6 without Sentinel) and would be pretty awesome.

Going to echo a lot of folks and go Monk.

Before race:

STR: 8
DEX: 20
CON: 14
INT: 10
WIS: 20
CHA: 8

Then go Mountain Dwarf for +2 CON/+2 STR to get:

STR: 10
DEX: 20
CON: 16
INT: 10
WIS: 20
CHA: 8

Dunno which Monk subclass.

I'd probably end up with a 20 str / 20 con halfling druid, schooling bandits with a quarterstaff, using the ASIs to increase wis to more decent levels over time, getting more druidy/balanced and less whack-em-over-the-head-when-they-look-at-you-funny as he levels.

No need to be more optimised than the rest of the party.
