View Full Version : DM Help Weirdly Specific Background Music Needed

I need some music suggestions for a very specific sort of effect, and I’m not sure whether it’ll be possible, but I’d like help getting as close as I can. Basically, my players are going to be encountering two versions of the same god-like entity; one aligned with peace and natural cohesion (not quite law/order, but more a Bambi-like “everything works together as it should in the forest (as long as humans don’t shoot deer and start fires)”), and one ‘corrupted’ version aligned with random violence, sickness, and disproportionate destruction fueled by hatred. I’d like it if the background music for the first version could be something really calming and holy-sounding, like evoking that really serene feeling you’d get meeting a deity of peace, but then the harder part, I’d like it so the second version’s background music could sound really similar to a distorted/broken version of the first song, like, really familiar, but in a “dark/horrific reprise” sort of way, or like getting a corrupted file of the first song. Is there any combination of two songs that could possibly give me that kind of effect? Thanks in advance for any help.

Under Pressure/Ice Ice Baby, for sure.

The first thing that comes to mind is "P Is For Perfect" and its reprise, a la TFS.

The second thing that comes to mind is something simple, like church bells, followed by a discordant version.

The third thing that comes to mind is Symphony No 1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eb-efaaygH4).

For most ambient music, I find heading over to Freeplaymusic.com (https://freeplaymusic.com/#/) will almost always yield exactly what I'm looking for.

Some of the music associated with the Advent faction from Sins of a Solar Empire (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7jVG6mwjF4&index=3&list=PL4033568B6970D286) might do you nicely, particularly using Advent Rebel pieces for the good side and Advent Loyalist pieces for the evil side.

Particular possibilities:
"Expulsion (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcQX4o1HCmI)" with "The Expanding Empire (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPcULxdb-zU)
"Purity of Memory (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1FpfXXEkoA)" with "Inevitable Retribution (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1xaq8fVCgE&feature=youtu.be)"
"A World in Isolation (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WX9SwWrL9i0)" with "The Prophecy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5NElaINuUk)"

There's not quite a direct "good/evil reprise" in the soundtrack (at least, not one that would fit; "To the Victor (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mf4MRBgRq00)" reprises "Strength in Separation (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnOU55mw7yA)" and elements of "The Emerging Empire (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=By0alXGznPM)", but I imagine they have too much of a militaristic bent for what you are looking for), but the sets above share a lot of elements so as to be recognisably associated nonetheless.

I suggest actually going to the Dark Reprise page on TVTropes, finding two themes you like, then pulling their instrumentals on YouTube. Bonus points if you can find a pair that your players are less familiar with.
