Y'know, back in #691 Elan found a treasure chest in the desert of which the contents have never been mentioned. I can't decide if they were entirely inconsequential or if later Elan will pop up some trick and go "Remember that chest I found in the desert when we were looking for Girard's Gate?"

Also, what's "overthinking?"

Pretty sure that's just a joke. It may explain what they're paying the pirates with, though.

The Girdle of Femininity/Masculinity was a joke too, until it wasn't. :p

It was shown on screen, you know. And what it was and could do were described.

I think if there was more to this one, at the very least there'd have been a 'passing around loot' scene, even if only as a funny background event.

It's clearly a Hobbit reference. I hear it still smells of troll.

Trolls in the Desert? No, no, no this obviously belonged to the Wild Were-Worms (http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Were-worms) of the Last Desert.

Maybe what it was and what it could do were described. Obviously Elan and Roy are going to be put in a situation where they need to escape assassins with a clever mimic disguise.

It didn't come with a note did it?

You see, I believe it's mostly a joke, since Roy just states that he "just figured there's like an 80% chance that if he (Elan) walks around enough, he'll trip over the entrance or something." (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0691.html)

That said, I don't doubt Rich could use it later as a callback, even if I think it wouldn't be central to the plot (like the tumor joke or the movie snacks).

Haley is the one who called it back in a later strip (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0727.html).

She made a callback to the joke that he'd trip over the plot, but not exactly about the treasure chest.

She made a callback to the joke that he'd trip over the plot, but not exactly about the treasure chest. The way I read that, Rich set up the joke with having Elan trip over something real... and the punch line (or the reveal) was Haley breaking the 4th wall a bit in describing what was going on as Elan tripping over something abstract: a plot, or the plot. That actual tripping over something after Roy's comments in the set up strip are like the rim shot used (drum and cymbal, bad dum, tsch!) by a stand up comic ...

Elan thought he found a treasure chest. But what he really found was the casket with the remains of Master Fyrion's Son.

They'll use it to regenerate Sigdi's arm.

So the rimshot happens before the punchline?

There is no reason that one rimshot can't service two jokes. The original Roy joke, and Haley's payoff. Rich, as The Creator of OoTS world is also its Master Joke Teller, and is unbounded by time.
