Click.

The door at the top of the rickety old stairs behind you is locked shut and secured from the other side, trapping you in the basement. And you're not alone. There's something down here with you. Something skittering, crawling, clawing, gnashing.

Hungry. So hungry.

Red eyes peer out from the darkest corner, a moment before a dark shape rushes toward you.

SQUEEEEEEEEE!

What do you do?

I'd like you all to answer these questions in your posts, whether directly, or integrating in your narration.

Zarthorox, you wouldn't have agreed to come down to the basement without there being something in it for you. Why did the adventurers come down here and what are they hoping to get out of it? Follow-up: Who locked the door behind you, and why?

Kari, it is dark in basements. Is there a light source down here, or did you bring one of your own? Also, you suspected there was something down here, something hungry. What gave it away, and did you take any special steps to prepare for an attack/ambush?

Jack, you beautiful rogue. You have your own reasons to come down here that you didn't share with your fellow adventurers. What secrets about this situation are you keeping, and why?

"Watch out, my lord!" Kari darts past Jack, the light of her torch revealing the nature of the beast. She knew by the foul stench coming under the door and the piles of droppings that covered the staircase that she'd have to be on the guard for a winged monstrosity, yet she didn't fret too much about preparations once she gauged the size of the filth-dropplets. Whatever was down here was small and acustomed to the dark, thus the only counters neccecary were a strong lightsource, a favorable weapon and a catchphrase.

"One-handed: Hell's Decent!"

The light of her torch glinting off the steel of her Signiture Weapon, Kari swings Bianca down at the bat, attempting to remove it's areial advantage.

Jack clicked his tongue as he stepped in some filth drops. Nothing he wasn't used to, from his life on the streets, but he was trying to aim for better now and these were some of his best boots. "Yes, protect me!", he called as he stepped aside, letting poor, deluded Kari take care of whatever foul beast was headed for them. "I'll just be... looking at some things over here." He knew... or well, believed that there were some... important papers in this place Completely worthless and ridiculously out of date, of course, but the signatures on them were real. A few clever... modifications and they might pass muster enough to help him further his charade. As long as no one looked too hard at them, of course. The shelves near him, especially seemed like a good candidate for that sort of thing, so he went to have a closer look at them.

Kari's swing was fierce and true, but the Bat twisted in mid-air, causing the blow to glance off its matted, filth-slick hide. Splatters of something, not blood but rather filth, splash back at the brave Fighter, settling on her face, and across the front of her armor. Some might have splattered onto her lips. And she thinks maybe there's some in her eye, or at least on her eyelash. Ugh. The smell. Just being down here smells like filth, but that stuff that splattered off it. Like rotten fruit and animal feces, stuffed inside a corpse's infected, buzzard pecked lower intestines.

Jack gets to the shelves and begins picking over them. He gets a whiff of the Bat-Stench, and its bad from here. Oh gods, is there a droplet on Kari's upper lip, dangling there, threatening to plop into her mouth?! Nasty.

Kari: You'll need to Defy Danger with +Con to resist the nauseating filth as you feel your own bile rise up. It's like the Bats are Filth-Pinatas with Flurrying Wings and Piercing Shrieks.

Jack: If you want to keep looking through the shelves, you might find something. You can roll for the Discern Realities basic move, and you'll get +1 thanks to being a Professional.

Also, I updated the map.

"Aw ****--" Kari manages to get out before a wave of it crashes down on her. She gags a bit, her torch making an awful sizzling sound. She tries to keep her eyes open, even with an ugly grey mass blocking her view of the even uglier mass. She takes a breath...

Zarthorox glances back at the door they just came through. Who had closed that door behind them? He was certain this building had been abandoned for years, and the three of them were the only ones inside. After all, most people were wary of places once dwelt in by wizards, even those with good intentions. And even moreso where one had died there under mysterious circumstances. "Happy is the town whose wizards are all ashes" and all that.

Zarthorox knew there was truth in that. Magi tampered with forces not entirely within mortal ken, and amateur magic-users like the former owner of this place could be even more hazardous. Graylse Ollander had been an important official in this city, which was why the townsfolk had tolerated his presence. If only they had known what he had held in the hidden rooms beneath his stately home...

"Bah, typical ham-handed steel-swinger," muttered the wizard to himself as he saw Kari attempting to contend with the bat. He spared a glance at Jack, rifling through the papers in the desk. "And a typical sticky-fingered cutpurse, grasping at worthless trinkets when real power lies below. If only I could do this without their aid...!"

He raised his staff and waved his hand through the air, intoning the magical words and tracing the signs before him, readying to cast a spell at the bat should it come for him.

Jack turned as he heard a noise and shuddered when he saw Kari covered in filth. Fighting back the revulsion, he turned back to the shelves, still hoping that they would contain what he needed. Kari, hopefully, would be able to take care of herself.

[roll0]

What here is useful or valuable to me?

Jack spotted something interesting among the dust-covered bottles of mysterious embalming fluids in which strange things floated -- tiny reptiles, fetuses of unknown origin, a dismembered hand, an eyeball, etc. There were clay jars containing strange herbs and spices, or perhaps old, expired components for the kind of Hedge Magic and backwoods Thaumaturgy practiced by Graylse Ollander, more successfully in his youth, but increasingly incompetently in his elder years. But enough about those things, which held little to no value in their current state. No, Jack had spotted, on the top shelf just outside of reach, a few scroll cases hanging over the edge, cases that would have preserved (mostly) any documents within, cases that were used to hold important legal documents, titles, deeds, fiefs, and what have you. Or sometimes magic scrolls.

The only complication is, they are on the top shelf out of reach, And these shelves don't seem .. exactly .. stable.

Oh and one more thing. Kari's attention was on the bat, and rightfully so. But Zarthorox lurking back, the Wizard had a good vantage point to spot any skulduggery that Jack was up to.

Kari's predicament was more direct. That nastiness that had splashed her was a major distraction, but her hands were full and she couldn't spare one to wipe the filth from her face. Unless she dropped the torch to free a hand. Then she could continue fighting while wiping that nasty off.

Zarthorox saw that Jack was still up to no good, but he couldn't tell what exactly it was. Kari on the other hand, Zarthorox could see her trying to wipe her face off with her shoulder, which wasn't working, and that she was thinking about possibly dropping the torch. The only problem? The floor was so dirty and dusty and filthy that the torch would possibly sputter and go out.

Possibly? There were few Magickal Laws that were more reliable than the Law of Maer-Fegh, the Demon of Bad Luck. If something could go wrong, it would.

Jack has spotted valuable treasures on the top shelf. However, danger lies between he and it. Dare he defy it? And what of the watchful gaze of Zarthorox upon him?

Kari has a tough choice to make. Drop the torch and wipe her face, or continue to battle distracted, taking a -1 ongoing until she can get that bat-goop of foulness off. Or maybe she can call for someone to dab her face clean, but whoever did so would surely be endangered by the Bat. Of course, the torch would probably keep burning if she dropped it right? It's not like she'd be dropping it in a bucket of water or something.

Zarthorox has played things a bit passive, inviting me to make a move. I revealed a danger to him. That if Kari drops the torch, it will almost certainly go out, plunging them in darkness. Maer-Fegh's Law demands it!

What do you all do?

Kinro

Of course, there were barrels right behind Jack that might have provided a perfectly reasonable leg up if he had had the temperament or inclination to look around himself, or even bother thinking for a moment. He didn't, though, too focused was he on the tantalizingly official-looking scroll cases and too busy scaling up the shelves, without a thought to their safety or to his own well-being. Or, for that matter , that of the filth-covered Kari, still fighting off the diseased-ridden flying... whatever it was.

Jack was hanging on the side of the shelves, the old wood was creaking in a way that indicated that the craftsman who built the shelves hadn't intended on anyone climbing up the side, especially someone geared up for Adventuring. The rusted nails that held the short end of the shelves to the basement wall were pulled out, bent, or broken, and the shelf wobbled insecurely. But despite all that, Jack managed to maintain his grip, and his balance, and had a hand free to grasp the cases, one at a time, and secure them away on his personage.

Which of course left Jack hanging from the side of rickety-wobbly-creaky shelves, even more laden than he had when he climbed up.

Jack, add Mystery Scroll Cases, Load 1, to your gear. You'll have to take some time to look over them and figure out what they are, exactly. But they must be valuable/useful, right?

Kari, you are too distracted in your fight to notice Jack's pilfering the scrolls, but you do notice him climbing the shelves.

Zarthorox, I'll leave it up to you if you want to have seen Jack steal those scroll cases or not.

Oh, also Kari, when you failed the Hack and Slash roll, you should have marked experience.

Illogictree
2019-02-15, 11:41 AM
The wizard spared a glance at Jack's antics, making note of the scroll cases he was taking. Those would be interesting to examine later, even if they contained no magic of their own.

But for now, Zarthorox was more focused on the bat making a nuisance of itself. To have his meat shield hobbled by their first fight would make anything to come more difficult for him.

With a disdainful sigh, he flicked his fingers toward the winged rodent, releasing the spell energies he'd been gathering. A spray of tiny sparks shaped like tiny screaming skulls leaped from his outstretched hand, swerving through the air to impact the foul creature.

"Kari! What do you think you're doing?", Jack called out imperiously from his spot, hanging off of the bent shelves. "It's been whole seconds and you haven't even managed to rid yourself of that flying pest?" He let go of the shelves and had his bow out before he even hit the ground, already ready to shoot out of the air the bat that was assaulting his protector.'

The bat rebounded off the ceiling, turning over sharply to go at Kari again from another angle. But she was ready for him, and through filth-veiled eyes, she jabbed at the nasty winged vermin.

A volley of spellcrafted and mundane missiles struck it as well, and right before Kari's eyes, the bat exploded into chunks of gooey, sticky, plague-ridden meat and gore.

And it splashed all across her, like a bucket of chum.

She'll be picking bat-bits out of her armor and gear for weeks.

Now what?

"Fools!" grouses Zarthorox, lowering his staff. "If a simple bat gives you such trouble, how can I expect you to fare against more dangerous foes? Who knows what forces Ollander might have put in place to guard the Thurible of Writhing Shadows, or what he may have accidentally caused it to call up in his clumsy manhandling of it."

He pokes at what's left of the bat's corpse with the end of his staff, examining it for any clues.

"Ap-poligies Lord Jack, I failed to register my opponent as a threat, and let my guard down. Won't happen again." Kari cleans her sword, sheathes it, then cleans the rest of herself, blood and droppings slopping off all around her. "And thank you, Zarothox, for your well-timed spell. Glad to see you're ready for Ollander's uh, thimble of shadows..."

Kari trails off and looks down at the corpse Zarothax is poking, taking a moment to reflect. How could she have let herself be bamboozled by such a weak creature? Her mother would have gutted it in half an instant... Why couldn't she do the same? Shaking a few more droplets off her head, she holds her torch high and takes several steps forward, examining her surroundings.

Zarthorox examined the remains, and there was a lot to see among them. Around them. All over the place. Bits here, bits there. The biggest chunk gave the Wizard a hypothesis, and that hypothesis was born out by studying more bits and chunks.

The Dire Bat was of such unusual size due to an active and fluctuating imbalance of its humours, causing it to swell and grow in an attempt to find a balance. The cause for this is unknown, but due to the actively fluctuating state, the cause is likely notably beyond the natural.

Where did Zarthorox study Natural Philosophy and the Humors and Anatomies of the Body?

Kari was slowly getting used to the smell that now covered her. Or her nose was getting numb.

I invite Kari to make the Discern Realities move.

"See that it doesn't.", Jack replied, unable to repress a shudder of disgust at Kari's poor state, thankful, at least, that it was her who took the brunt of the attack and not himself. Warily, he peered into the shadows. "Yes, Zarthorox's thimble. It's why we're all here, isn't it.", he said. "Tell me, dear wizard, should we expect more horrible beasts like this one if we progress further?"

The wizard strokes his black, bushy beard and narrows his red eyes. He briefly reminisces about first learning the humor theory of disease on his grandmother's knee. She had been an apothecary and knew ways of applying natural substances to balance the various fluids found in the body. Later, this formed the basis of the self-sought knowledge that had brought him to the attention of his first master, Alkemides the Calcinator. The old mage had taken him under his wing and given him a proper education in natural philosophy. That had started him on his path to being inducted into the Rubicund Tower... and, of course, later being forced out...

"Hmm... clearly, something unnatural is at work here," he says sagely, trying to keep it simple for the others. "Given the Thurible is an object sacred to Zul-Ahk, the Ur-Lich, and an object of dark and terrible power, it is a simple conclusion that this corrupt and deformed being is the result of its influence." He looks sternly at the two of them. "Be on your guard, we are likely to encounter more of its ilk. And perhaps things yet more terrible."

"The question now," he continues musing, "is, where did Ollander conceal the entrance to its resting place?"

Kari moved into the center of the room and examined the various crannies and nooks of the old Hedge Mage's basement. There were smaller storage rooms whose wood-slatted walls had been chewed through by ...something. The trash and debris were filthy, mixed in with the junk was feces and guano, and it crawled with scavenging beetles, roaches and centipedes all of whom were sustaining a healthy population of juicy spiders.

Kari's sputtering torch struggled to pierce the darkness of the far corner, but as she turned her eyes from the nasty crawling details of the trash pile, the light seemed to push the veils of the darkness aside just enough for her to pick out four shapes. One Dire Bat was dead, its corpse erupted with sores and rot from within. Three other Dire Bats (designed 2, 3, and 4) were surrounding it, picking at it with their needle-like talons and fangs, having turned against their compatriot after whatever plague they were carrying, likely the same plague that caused them to swell and mutate into their current forms, had finally overcome it.

As if on cue, all three of the active Dire Bats turn their gaze to Kari, one of them with a torn chunk of rotten-from-within sister-bat dangling from its needle-like fangs. Their eyes uniform gleam red as they reflect the torch light like malevolent mirrors.

"SQUEEE!"

What do you do?

Don't forget that every time you fail a roll, you get to mark experience. Kari's incompetent delving in the unknown has uncovered more threats to the party.

Because of the current positioning of the party members, Kari is the only one currently threatened by the new Dire Bats, but if Zarthorox or Jack move to aid Kari, they may be placing themselves in danger.

"Incoming!" Kari shouted, drawing her blade and slashing at the oncoming wave of bats.

• On a 7–9, you deal your damage to the enemy and the enemy makes an attack against you.

"Incoming what?", Jack asked, but Kari was looking behind the shelves. He cleared a few things to get a look through the shelves, only to jump in surprise as he saw the bats beyond. He didn't stop there, though. Quickly, he scaled the shelves again, but, not content to merely bend them towards himself, this time he tried rocking them the other way, trying to loosen them fully off of the wall and send them crashing into the bats beyond.

The screech of the bats and Kari's shouted warning snaps Zarthorox out of his contemplation.

"Of all the -! Didn't I just say to be on guard?!" he cries. He moves slightly to see what's going on. Just as he spots the bats, he sees Jack spring up onto the shelves and attempt to collapse them. He winces at the thought of all that magic equipment and documents being damaged, but he has to admit it's a good idea. He shoves the end of his quarterstaff into the corner of the shelf at what he rapidly guesstimates is a critical balance point and levering, attempting to give Jack a hand toppling it.
