So if I plan on a multiclass build that’s Sorc 17/Lock 1/ Pal 2

My sorcer spellcasting level has me at 17 which is
4 3 3 3 2 1 1 1 1

But according to my multiclass spellcasting level as seen on the table (1/2 of 20 plus 1/3 of 20 rounded down) I would then be at 16 not 17 spellslot level.

E.G. 4 3 3 3 2 1 1 1 but no level 9 slot thus capping me lower then my actual capabilities...

Is this right? And if so being Sorc 16 nets me the same final result in slots so I might as well bump Lock to 2 right? Or am I messing up the rules?

I’m not sure where you’re getting those calculations.

To calculate your overall slots, you take all of your full caster levels (so 17 Sorcerer levels), and half of your half-caster levels (2 Paladin divided by 2, which is 1).

So you’re a level 18 spellcaster from a slots perspective, but a level 17 Sorcerer from a spells known/sorcery points/etc perspective.

You need sorc17 to know a 9th spell, otherwise you'll need to upcast a lower spell to use that spell slot.

But yeah, you are confused. All normal caster use the same slot progression table, every class level adding a progression level. Paladin progress at half speed, every 2 class levels adding a progression level.

It's ok, remember you use the same slots for both classes, so for example you could use paladins cure wounds in a 4 lvl slot if you wanted.
