Has anyone ever run a wizard character from level 1-20, or heard of someone doing so? I'm just curious if it is possible to do so.

Why shouldn't it be possible?

The only thing it really depends on is if your DM and party are willing to stick with the characters long enough.

That is, in fact, the default. Multiclassing is a variant rule-though a very common one.

I've never been in a 1-20 campaign myself, though.

I have a few times, and some of my group members have as well.

It just seems that with a wizards low hp and armor class, it would be difficult for them to survive that long

That is the trade-off. Wizards are very powerful when they reach higher levels, but they don't have a glut of HP to rely on. Team members help a lot, but many DMs from 3e onward tend to target wizards specifically because of the impact they have on the battle field.

Of course, it doesn't matter how much Damage you can do when there is a Wall of Force between you and the aggressor. Or a Demon. Or a forcecage. Or you are trapped in a maze spell... etc.

Wizards start squishy and become harder and harder to squish as levels progress.

Use that 20 Int and fight smart, and make good friends. That's how a Wizard makes it to level 20.

Well, that's why (non-abjuration) wizards don't facetank dragons.

Wizards are actually pretty survivable vs. other casters. Mage armor + shield spell alone gives them over 20 AC when they need it. Then there is the teleporting around, invisibility etc. They really have no problems, espesially not the abjuration and war mages.

They ARE pretty terrible at low levels so you DO have to be careful, but it's still not that hard to keep them alive as long as you're careful. I'd say probably by level 5 or so their weak AC and hp aren't as noticeable anymore. Once you get into the mid levels, they are one of the 4 or 5 best classes in the game probably.

But has anyone ACTUALLY SEEN a wizard make it to 20th level?

Sure, oodles of times. Done it myself more than once.

My Mountain Dwarf Abjuration Wizard got to level 19 before we stopped. I was walking around in +2 Half Plate armor and had my Abjuration shield to help me survive attacks. The only reason we stopped at 19 was because real life problems happened. But Bunkum Bloodcoat is ready to be played again at any time to get up to 20!

An abjuration wizard has a grand total of one level of squishiness, and everyone is squishy at first level. By level 2, she's already got more HP and AC than the fighter.

And by level 5 or so, nobody is squishy any more.

It's no more difficult to get a wizard to 20 than any other class or combination of classes. In any case, the biggest difficulty will be finding a group to play with that sticks together and with the same characters long enough.
