View Full Version : 3rd Ed Tendriculos and rescuing allies from a grapple

The scenario:
The Tendriculos is spotted fairly far away, too far to be a threat.
The party decides to engage.
Knowledge checks are insufficient to inform them of its grab/swallow/paralysis/acid combo.
They notice its regeneration partway through, realize that the unarmed fighting Battle Dancer can overcome it.
Battle Dancer gets grabbed in a tendril, transferred to mouth. Without a lucky check, she basically has one round of freedom, not long to live.
Tendriculos is at 50 nonlethal damage, in addition to 7 lethal.

The party:
A tauric giant wasp (Savage Species template. Large, fly speed, hiiiigh str) Mon. Humanoid 6 with no class levels. Grapple +17. Adjacent to tendriculos. Elven Double-bow, Duom
A Grey Elf Wizard 3/Cleric 3. Grapple +3. Riding the wasp. Longsword.
A Tiefling Warlock 5. Grapple about +6 (don't have the sheet in front of me). 50 feet away. No weapon.
A Tiefling Battle Dancer 5. Grapple about +8 (ditto above), currently grappled. Down to 37/50HP. +1 Shocking Burst Greataxe (which she uses rarely)

The only potentially useful spell the caster has prepared is Summon Monster II.
No useful Warlock invocations picked.

My question:
What does a good, cooperative party do about this?
Tauric giant wasp tied a rope around Battle Dancer's leg, opposed strength checked the Tendriculos, succeeded. The battle dancer took another 13 damage (ruled as if removing a stuck harpoon by force) and was pulled clear.

EDIT: I just remembered, we also have a Ghast. Don't see that helping, but still.

Feats: EWP (Elven Double-Bow), EWP (Duom), Point-Blank Shot, Rapid Shot, Hover, Flyby Attack
Custom flaws: Gullible (automatically fails Sense Motive against feints), Ignorant (-4 to all knowledge and appraise checks, which are very important in my games)

Elf's inventory:
Longsword
Shortsword
Shortbow
100 arrows
Spell component pouch
Silver unholy symbol
Wiz spells prepped:
0: Disrupt Undead, Prestidigitation, Light, Acid Splash, Ray of Frost
1: Ray of Enfeeblement, Magic Weapon, Magic Missile x2
2: Command Undead, Levitate, Summon Monster II
Clr spells prepped (domains War and Travel):
0: Create Water, Cure Minor Wounds x3
1: Endure Elements (he doesn't have a ring like everyone else), Inflict Light Wounds, Cure Light Wounds, Longstrider
2: Spiritual Weapon, Cure Moderate Wounds x2
Feats: Quickdraw, Two-Weapon Fighting, Two-Weapon Defense

Tiefling (Warlock)'s inventory:
Ghost Touch chain shirt
(a custom) Ring of Endure Elements (continuous)
Invocations: Devil Sight, Eldritch Spear, Beguiling Influence
Not sure of feats right now, but I know he has Combat Casting.

Tiefling (Battle Dancer)'s inventory:
+1 Shocking Burst greataxe
(a custom) Ring of Endure Elements (continuous)
ditto, unsure of feats, but I know she has Improved Grapple and some skill boosting feats.

Aff, see OP. I can't think of anything, but the Playground is a magical place.
