DONE! All praise to Glorious Leader!

I will be cruel but fair.

On a different note I have always disliked the way blazers and suits fit on me, the jackets don't have enough cling to feel comfortable moving in. I believe this is due to the dumb 1-2 buttons that work rule, so the jacket just doesn't have enough contact to fit snuggly.

Anyone worn a double breasted suit? They look better anyway, and they seem like they could be snugger due to the way they grab the waist.

An opportunity truly lost to time. I feel like that band and the Lonely Island should make a music off video, "I hate sports" versus "I like sports and I don't care who knows." Do a whole Scott Pilgrim scene with it.

As penance for starting a duplicate thread, the first post of my version shall be retained for posterity. Look upon my shame and mock me! It is the least I deserve!
Ok. Here are the rules for this thread:

1. Spam. For the purposes of Random Banter, one word posts are generally considered spam. Like, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Gamed or Structured Game forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe."

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to Random Banter. Random Banter has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for Random Banter and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in Random Banter. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to Random Banter.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status such as I'm here or I'm back. Seriously it's meaningless and annoying.

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It'll move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will on deaf ears unless you cam add something more meaningful to the conversation. Ignorers of this rule will be fed to beasts in gladiatorial combat.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic? or what are we talking about?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. Also, try to use proper punctuation and capitalization. Or, just Play Pin-the-Tail-on-the-Donkey with CapiTALization like a proper DWARF!

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with ust one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts.

13. Don't double-post. We have edit buttons for a reason. If you want to reply to multiple people, please use the multi-quote button.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another thread.

15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.
16. You don't have to hate sports to post here, but it helps.

All hail the tyrant! Long* may he reign! I above all appreciate the arrival again of alliteration.

Picking up where we left off:

Wooden stakes were mentioned; those also kill people who are still alive.

Clearly a typo. Peelee was offering you some delicious wooden steaks fried in garlic. Which may kill you eventually, I guess, but only if you have weak arteries.

*Well, about three months, if the last thread was any guide.

Why are your steaks wooden? I could understand charcoal-like, but wooden doesn't make sense to me. What abomination have you wrought upon delicious meat?

Do you accept payment in vague promises? How about free rental of my children? I've been trying to rent them out to childless couples, but none has yet taken me up on the offer. This despite my very reasonable rates. Obviously people don't actually want practice with small children in a (relatively) controlled environment. I am beginning to think I could not get people to do it for free.

Hmmm. This has some potential. Can the small children watch other, smaller children? That would be ideal. Or, if the vague promises are of unbound riches, that is also acceptable.

We will surely find mountains of platinum larger than the earth (https://www.space.com/38493-gravitational-waves-neutron-star-gold.html)! And before you ask, my thesis is related to astronomy, so we might actually find multiple planetary masses worth of gold or platinum, just millions of light-years away.

As to the other option, my oldest child is only 5. I don't think you want her trying to watch smaller children unless you enjoy fires, blood, and general chaos.

steaks

Speaking of steaks...

In my copy of Cook's Illustrated Cook it Right MEAT the "Pan-Seared Thick-Cut Steaks" recipe advises cooking the steaks in a 275 degrees Fahrenheit oven, and then searing them in a pan, while my copy of Cook's Illustrated 25 Years of Your Favorite Recipes the "Perfect Cast Iron Steak" recipe advises putting the pan in a 500 degrees Fahrenheit oven, then putting it on a stovetop and cooking the steaks on it (flipping them about every two minutes).

So which do I do?

I don't want my iron collection to only ward off Elves!

Unrelated - from the 4th edition D&D DMG:

"A grim, hulking fighter disembowels the high priest of the serpent god on his own altar. A laughing rogue spends ill-gotten gains on cheap wine in filthy taverns. Hardy adventurers venture into the unexplored jungle in search of the fabled City of Golden Masks.
A swords-and-sorcery campaign is old-school D&D, a tradition that goes back to the roots of the game. Here you'll find a dark, gritty world of evil sorcerers and decadent cities, where the protagonists are more motivated by greed and self interest than by altruistic virtue. Martial characters tend to be far more common than arcane or divine ones. In such a pulp fantasy setting, those who wield magic often symbolise the decadence and corruption of civilisation."

Here you’ll find a dark gritty world of evil sorcerers and decadent cities, where the protagonists are motivated more y greed and self-interest than by altruistic virtue. Fighter, rogue, and barbarian characters tend to be far more common that wizards, clerics, or paladins. Magic items are therefore rare and often dangerous.

Certain Dungeons and Dragons novels follow in the footsteps of classic sword-and-sorcery novels. The world of Athas (as featured in numerous Dark Sun novels and game products), with its heroic gladiators and tyrannical sorcerer-kings, belongs squarely in this game."

Wholesome family entertainment.

Isn't law considered a hot career? Why are people suggesting against it?
It's incredibly overcrowded, law school is frighteningly expensive, and the pithiest I've heard was a lawyer talking to an L1 class, "oh, if you thought it was hard getting into law school..."

Of course, some fields like Space Law are relatively obscure, have only a few colleges in the country offering certification on space law, and judging by the direction several governments and private companies seem to be going in coupled with the fact that a lot of the old legislation and treaties were written during the space race, one could wager that there'll likely be more demand for that speciality than many others in the near future.

Of course, there's also always corporate or government work. Nice, soul-deadening, spirit-crushing work. Or private firms that insist you try to find new and revolutionary ways to squeeze in more billable hours in your already overworked day.

Bytheway,if anyone wants to donate a new building in my name so I can get into an ivy league school, please feel free. Screw specialty at that point, C's get degrees and networking is WAY more important there.

They are half dragon. Also, I am a small, fuzzy, green dragon. We run toward neutral good, unlike our large, scaly counterparts. Well, good-ish. Good is a factor in my alignment. I am fairly certain that my children follow their mother in being rather chaotic. I still remember her turning and kissing me passionately when I introduced a particularly absurd rule to Mao.

On the subject of steak, my advice is to sear the steak on a cast iron until the surfaces are nicely browned, and then stick the pan in the oven for 10-15 minutes. I haven't ever actually done that, but we have done the "sear on stove, put in oven" a couple times with non-stick aluminum pans and a cookie sheet and it turned out well.

So, technically, they both made a Random Banter thread, it just didn't stay made. :smallwink:

At my university, the only graduate students whose spouses have a support group are law students. We don't have a medical school, else there would probably be a "doctor in training spouse" support group. The law school also keeps a weird schedule with no Friday classes and starting at different times from the rest of the school. The law building used to be across a road from the rest of campus, but they recently removed that road. It is now much easier to walk to the law building.

Also, I hate sports. In all seriousness if I find some classes near me might make a dedicated thread.

In other news, my shifts for next month have arrived, I've got the day off that I wanted and I'm going to make an appointment with my GP to talk about potentially having depression or anxiety. Hopefully I'll be able to go on the magic calm pills and be referred to a therapist soon.

As far as dancing goes, I know I have heard of a few dance clubs that alternate through various styles over time, so you can pick up a few. Otherwise, I think something energetic like swing or salsa. They at least all look fun to do.

As far as the Thread making goes, I can be a bit faster on the ball to grab the next one. Then I can work on my own style of the rules list.

I will bide my time, waiting for your order to rise up in a coup and seize the means of production. It will be a bath of blood.

It's incredibly overcrowded, law school is frighteningly expensive, and the pithiest I've heard was a lawyer talking to an L1 class, "oh, if you thought it was hard getting into law school..."

I thought about going into law a long time ago (around 2000), but I wanted to do high tech and computer-stuff law, and I realized that my choices were working for the people I was generally mad at, but who had money, or working for something like the EFF and being broke. I decided not to go into law.

So that's another thing to think about. If you're passionate about an issue, but one side of the likely arguments is not the side you'd want to be arguing in court, then it's probably better to get into activism for that issue rather than go into law to work on that issue, unless you're very pro the side that has lots of money to hire lawyers.

In more typical "stuff that neither makes the news nor decides important new precedents" law, most of the lawyers I know are not doing particularly well financially. It's hard to find enough clients who can afford to pay the kind of money they need to charge to meet their expenses, particularly if they went into law because they wanted to help people (since many of the people who need help do not have a lot of money). I've heard that's gotten even harder to get hired by a firm out of law school since there's an oversupply, and everyone I know with their own practice is stressed about finding clients. (Well, one person who does something pretty obscure seems to mostly be doing ok, but that has to do with just how few people are in that particular highly-regulated corner of financial law and how few other lawyers want to mess with it.)

If there's a specific legal specialty you're into that you've confirmed has actual demand (back when I was considering it this would tend to be things that involve both being a lawyer and being very knowledgeable about x, where x is something that most lawyers know nothing about yet is something that people with money go to court over - finance topics are probably the best fit here, but tech stuff might be too), then maybe law school will be a good idea. If it's just because it's a "path to a professional career through school", it's really not as much that thing anymore (I recommend nursing or welding if you want to get a job as soon as you're out of school, and I don't know of any "insta-hire into a job where you wear a suit" career anymore).

Of course, as already mentioned, if you get into an Ivy for law school, that's different and have fun working at a large firm where people spend more on a single suit than I spend on a week's worth of clothes. (To be fair, if I spent that much on work clothes I would probably be wearing, say, a velvet doublet, hose, boots, and an enormous hat to work just because I could, so maybe it's for the best that I don't have that clothing budget for work wear...)

Depends on the steak.

The first (cooking the steaks in an oven, and then searing in a pan) is the "Reverse Sear" method. IMO, it's great for thicker steaks (>1 in. thick).

The second recipe, where you preheat the pan, is better for thinner steaks (i.e. flank steak).

So you say, but assuming that's true, then even if only you appreciate them (or even if others do but are too shy to admit it), tonight I celebrate my love of 1983 pop music references. Sorry, but I couldn't resist the temptation. Perhaps this post is less clever than I think it is. Certainly it will appear in nobody's diary, and if I'm told how bad it is I may cry just a little bit, but at the end of the day I'm still standing and not to rock the boat, but if you have criticism you can rip it up because even if I haven't found favour in your eyes, I'll never never stop making references because when it comes to post formats, you just can't beat it. Unless there's a reason not to do this. Is there something I should know in that regard?

Running out of references now, so unless somebody can think of a new song I can use, it's over and I'll have to give it up. If you missed any of the references, quote the post and look at the size tags. They're a dead giveaway.

Hey Enderlord when you see this PM me your email so I can send you my current draft so you can beta-read.

Also speaking of which, I'm into draft 2 of my manuscript (officially, I've got more drafts below that). If anyone's interested in beta-reading it and stuff just PM me your email. It's a modern fantasy about a bi girl who discovers hidden magic and stuff.

Slightly related, I got my manuscript evaluation back. The negatives made me kinda depressed but I managed to bounce back.

How long is the novel? I have enough stuff in my life that I don't know how good I would be for a real long novel, but a smaller one could work for me since I have a 45 minute bus ride that I could potentially help with a smaller novel (~200 pages) in a fairly reasonable time span.

I'm currently at two chapters for this draft, around 20 pages. I get abooout two chapters a week done though.

Well just had an initial telephone interview. Didn't go brilliantly, because I wasn't kept on past the time limit, but we got through all the questions and the interviewer seemed to like my answers to some of them, so I'm filing this one under 'longshot but technically possible'.

Interesting I seem to be one of the few people this interviewer has called who seemed to be able to give a clear description of what the job entails, including extrapolating from the information given. At this point it'll probably come down to a mixture of interview quality and final year project interestingness* versus interview length and only having a third.

* A friend of mine pointed out that my FYP is really unusual as I essentially built something from the ground up, despite being inspired by an existing project.

Best of luck. Something to keep in mind with a promising interview even if you don't get this job is to apply for the next one they have that's applicable to you. They may well have notes on your file if you end up in the final round of the selecting process.

I don't like it when someone offers solutions to the problem they assume I'm trying to tell them about, rather than the one I'm actually trying to tell them about, and which they would understand if they listened. I sometimes do the same thing, admittedly, but it's not on purpose; it's a habit I inherited from my dad.

See, the proper way to deal with that is to use a lash to beat the recalcitrant fools into submission. If they continue to spout independent thought or to rebel against your just and proper authority, simply bind them to the wheel of pain for a month. Then they will be much better thralls.

I've actually started making jokes along those lines, although generally I'm one of the bit characters (generally the jerk boyfriend who showed up in one episode of least year's series).

Unfortunately I couldn't turn my love love into a TV show, the main character is unbearably pretentious and inherently unlikeable. Also a) is autistic and b) acts like a horny twelve year old at anything with some vague relation to sex.

Don't worry, I'm sure I'll come to terms with the fact I'll end up alone one of these years. (I, uh, really don't know if I should put that in blue text at this point)

Is there something wrong with the air conditioner in here? It keeps squeaking!

Also, smacking people who give solutions to the wrong problem upside the head with the big blue bat of motivation has never steered me wrong. Albeit I mostly threatened to do that to my idiot younger brother. And I suppose violence is rather looked down upon as a solution to strictly social problems. Nevertheless, the threat of violence (or the miming of violence at someone) generally communicates frustration with improper behavior.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think we've ever met in real life. Also, you've never been subjected to my rants About the changes and inconsistencies in Peter Jackson's version of Lord of the Rings (for starters, what was wrong with Erkenbrand? He is easily established as leading a large host, unlike Eomer who's got maybe a hundred people following him the last time he appeared on screen. Also the Prancing Point scene just doesn't work as well without The Man in the Moon stayed up too late, which was actually a very clever move by Frodo in the book as it stopped it from being obvious that he was trying to shut Pippin up, and Pippin himself was being much less oblivious...)

But taking it seriously yeah no, no one has ever thought to reverse the names of other vampires to make characters like they did with Alucard.
I imagine because reversing names is seen as rather trite and cliché at this point. The first one in the area gets to have the okay-ness grandfathered in, but anything else will just be seen as trying to copy the first one. So, unless you're going for a deliberate parody, it probably won't happen. (Also, not every name reverses to something that feels like a proper name.)

Had a strange urge to look up the story of Fabio getting hit in the face with a goose during a roller coaster, to see if I was allowed to laugh at that story or not. Wanted to make sure Fabio didn't actually get hurt.

Turns out the real story was that the roller coaster people were SUPER unsafe in how they built it. A goose hit a camera and the CAMERA hit Fabio and the roller coaster owners basically gaslight the media into going "hah what a goofy story!!!". And that's kinda ****ed up!

also to answer my initial question with this: aside from being sUPER pissed that they allowed a camera to hit him in the face and then claimed it was a goose to cover their asses, and like...the blood, obviously, he was fine. But now it's not laughable at for a different reason!

I don't mind most of that (though the hate against Jerry isn't funny to me; it and the talking heads are the biggest relics of how the show started off trying to be The Office but not really getting what made The Office good), but what really gets me is Ron's blatant hypocrisy. Other than that, I enjoy it alright.

Hey guys I need your opinion on a created I made. I actually made 4 Pokemon. All Wolverine Pokemon. There Type are all Steel/Fighting Pokemon. The Pokemon named is Mauler, Wolvon (Mauler second evolution form), Feralon (Mauler third evolution form) and Mega Feralon (Mauler Mega evolution form) Here are there stats.

Mauler:

HP: 50
Attack: 50
Defense: 100
Special Attack: 50
Special Defense: 100
Speed: 100

Wolvon:

HP: 75
Attack: 75
Defense: 125
Special Attack: 75
Special Defense: 125
Speed: 125

Feralon:

HP: 100
Attack: 100
Defense: 150
Special Attack: 100
Special Defense: 150
Speed: 150

Mega Feralon:

HP: 125
Attack: 125
Defense: 175
Special Attack: 125
Special Defense: 175
Speed: 175

So what do you think of Mauler and his evolution forms stats?

Qwertystop
2019-03-08, 09:12 PM
Megas generally get +100 BST across whichever stats (unless the previous form was notably bad, I think) and never get a boost to HP, so that bit is both balance-broken and impossible-broken.

Unsure about the rest off the top of my head; I haven't done competitive in ages and don't know benchmark stats.

Somehow I doubt that. A total of 750 is higher than all but six other Pokemon (the five mega-evolved legends plus Ultra Necrozma). A total of 900 is absurdly broken, higher than anything else by more than 100. This is not difficult to look up (https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_fully_evolved_Pok%C3%A9mon_by_base_stats).

I'm considering going clean shaven.

It's not the best look considering my weight, but as I'm wanting to be able to appear more feminine when I'm agender(/female) it's the easiest first step to making it practical.

This essentially boils down to my gender not being constant and me not being certain exactly how genderfluid I am. It'll likely not ever come back, because removing it is a conscious decision to try and help me be more comfortable.

WRT pronouns, I'm still happy with he/him/his, although I'd prefer they/them/their. I spend more time as male than female or agender, partially due to work, so it's something I'm going to have to be comfortable with anyway.

Okay.

vBulletin is cool because it usually can understand what you're trying to do even if you overlap tags instead of nesting them; there are very, very, very few languages that can accomplish that.

EDIT: It doesn't always, though.

As a programmer, I consider this very bad practice in a markup language. Not only does it introduce inconsistency, as you have to know which tags can't be interleaved (like quotes and spoiler boxes), but it also makes it a lot harder to delete a tag and all content within it, because you'll first have to search the content for any interleaved tags which may not be deleted. Point in case, see my unedited quote of your post.

I believe that a "viral" [thing], is best evaluated by long term viewing trends. Most things have a somewhat exponential growth of viewership. When something goes viral, it experiences exponential growth from hundred or thousands to millions over a fairly short time.

Are you looking for chemical composition (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_human_blood_components)? Or the free/black market value? If the later, a pint of blood is typically sold for between $100 and $300, depending on where in the chain the transaction occurs. However, a pint of blood not in a human body requires a significant amount of handling by skilled professionals.

If you are looking to make money off your blood and have veins that are easy to pierce and are willing to go near needles twice a week, you can donate plasma. There are 3 or 4 plasma donation centers near my university. You don't make great money, but it takes about an hour and you can make $15 - $30, making it better per hour than most student jobs.

I was asking about the free/black market value, but only as a joke. I was also asking for it relative to an equal volume of orange juice, rather than in absolute terms.

I googled the price of orange-juice, and it said about $3 for a gallon, so (going by your estimate of $300 for a pint for blood) the conversion rate is about 800.

In other words, if I wanted to profit by donating blood, it would require some very expensive cookies.

What I was trying to say was that what it costs to give blood (some elements, amino acids, time, and pain) is not the only reason that hospitals charge $300 to patients who need a pint of blood. There are also the phlebotomists who drew the blood, the costs of beds for people to lie on as their bodily fluids are removed through a drinking straw, the refrigerated transport to move blood from donation to use, the various levels of bureaucracy involved in all this, and so on and so forth. I suspect that if blood donation could be compensated, that the price paid to a donor would be in the $30 - $80 range.

All this makes me wish that artificial blood were easier to gain approval for clinical trial.

Well, the Red Cross sells blood to hospitals for about $100 - $180 (based on a very cursory google search). And hospitals in the US charge between $250 and $350 to give a patient a pint of blood. Presumably you could buy blood from the Red Cross if you could convince them you were a medical type person. And if you figure out a way to have a false vein to put the pint of blood in, you could buy from a hospital.

I had a tongue adventure today!

So today I needed to go to the dentist to get a fibroma removed from my tongue. This is the story.

I go there at 11:30, as was the agreed upon time I booked yesterday. However, I'm not in the system. So after some discussing, we learn that I AM in fact in the system...booked for 10:45. But that was the first time they offered me yesterday, which I said no too. They had replaced it with 11:30, which I approved. However in their system, the person then changed it from 11:30 back to 10:45, without providing notice. Woo!

So we rebook it for 12:30, and I come in at 12:30 for it and they're like okay Zodi, we booked you for an hour, let's get that benign tongue tumor snipped off and cauterized. The doctor looks at my tongue for one minute and says that she doesn't have any of the biopsy equipment here and needs to requisition it for me tomorrow, at a time they will tell me at their convienance.

After that I had to update my insurance with them, which took like 15 minutes or so. So all told this uh...took an hour to get finished. My reward for enduring it was 25 dollars gift card for Javaroma.

I bought a large hot chocolate with whip cream and chocolate, two chocolate and powdered croissants, a piece of terramasu, and two nanaimo bars.

A) Why would you even specify century? This forum, or even the internet, doesn't have that kind of history.

B) As mentioned, arguments should be left to lie in peace. Nothing good ever comes from dragging up bitter memories.

C) While 'terriblest' is not a word, no, Peelee was using a common linguistic comparison technique, replacing 'great' with 'terrible'. Entirely incorrect, but still acceptable amongst extremely casual circles.

D) Grammar checkers are not quite the end al to be all. For instance, your quote that I'm responding to could probably use a sprinkling of commas in there.

Nuh uh, my grammar is the greatyest!

While 'terriblest' is not a word, no, Peelee was using a common linguistic comparison technique, replacing 'great' with 'terrible'. Entirely incorrect, but still acceptable amongst extremely casual circles.

Actually, I was (mis)quoting a Harry Potter line I find thoroughly ridiculous, because it amused me. But your thing makes me sound smarter, so let's go with that one.

I got in trouble for misunderstanding a gesture my brother made. Apparently moving your hand (palm up-ish, angled a bit) over a desk counts as "pointing at the floor." After that, I asked how that made sense, and my father tried to gaslight me that I wasn't in trouble for disobeying my brother's vague gesture, but "only" for asking why that gesture meant that.

Not only am I not allowed to misunderstand things, but I'm not allowed to try to stop misunderstanding things... and when I do both, the second one is the "reason" I'm getting yelled at, even though I was already being yelled at before then.

Well, that sounds unpleasant. Though at least the problem wasn't surgical in nature, so hopefully that'll go fine tomorrow.

What was the greatest argument of the century in this forum?

The "problem player" thread(s?) from a few years back probably counts, if it's specifically arguments on this forum you're asking about. Haven't got a link saved anywhere... Anyone else remember those? I specifically remember something about how all summoning spells had a random chance of summoning hostiles in their game, and something about non-tracked spell component pouches being cheating.

I mean in the strictest sense it is surgical. They will remove the fibroma and then cauterize it.

I am having a problem that is far too petty to bring to the Woes and Advice thread.

I am a vegetarian and don't really do fake meat, so I just don't have much in my life that needs to go on a grill. (I know you can grill assorted veggies, but in practice I pretty much don't.)

The last time I lived by myself, someone gave me a hand-me-down gas grill, and after several years of it siting outside my townhouse's front door and doing nothing but accumulating a combination of rust and spiders my neighbors asked if they could borrow it for the afternoon. I decided to give it to them since I never used it, and haven't owned a grill since.

For the past 5-ish years, I've lived with someone with one of those plumbed-in-to-the-natural-gas grills. I used it to make asparagus once. It was pretty tasty asparagus.

I now own my own home, and the backyard screams "summer party house" because it has an in-ground swimming pool and an adjacent yard structure with a plumbed-in sink, a fireplace, and seating. I plan to fill in the small, nasty pond next to that this year and replace it with a patio area. The logical thing to do is also get some kind of grill/barbecue to go on my new pondless patio and throw a bunch of summer potluck grill parties, but I don't eat meat and can't see that I'd ever go outside and cook something if I'm not having a backyard party.

I'm torn between getting a nice, fancy grill of the kind that seems like it goes with my type of yard and vague party plans (probably the plumbed-in gas kind since they involve the least hassle if you're having a large group over), getting a small, low-end propane or charcoal grill that could grill a few token burgers, getting an indoor-outdoor electric grill, or not bothering with the whole thing since I don't really cook on a grill. I can afford to get a nice grill, but don't really feel like spending my discretionary yard fun times budget on a new theme park for rust and spiders that I won't actually use.

Thoughts? Opinions? Anecdotes? Recipes for delicacies involving rusty spiders?

Get an electric coleman grill and use an extension cord. It can be used inside for pancakes, hashbrowns, etc. and will make for a make-shift grill during the times you want summer grilling. If you end up using it a lot then invest in a better grill.

I grill 2-3 meals a day in summer myself, guaranteeing myself cancer and decent tasting meat. You seem unlikely to be in that position :)

If you're not going to grill things don't bother getting a grill, and especially don't bother getting a nice grill. That said, if you do start hosting more now that you can that might push you to do some grilling, especially as you absolutely can grill vegetables (I eat meat, but if I'm busting out the grill odds are it's mostly veggies going on it. By which I mean lots and lots of shish kebabs that have more veggies than pieces of meat) and make some pretty tasty dishes that way (the aforementioned marinated shish kebabs).

followed by

though

Which gender is Chaotic or Lawful and how does that relate to anime and medieval carpentry?

may be a contender as well.

So contentious were these threads that they've been stricken from search functions, but a good web search function will surely find them!

I have outdoor outlets in the yard structure, so adding an indoor/outdoor electric grill would be pretty straightforward. The previous owner had one on the counter in the yard structure. (We've been calling it a "cabana" but I'm not sure that's correct. It has a roof, one open side, and the other sides have counters/cabinets but are open-air above the counters. There's a kitchen sink with running water, a fireplace, electric overhead lights, and electrical outlets. I think the real estate listing called it an "outdoor kitchen", but that feels like it's stretching things to me. In practice, it's where we go to drink beer once it's reasonably warm outside. It also is in need of some pretty serious maintenance, but that's another thread.)

Yeah, that's why I'm having trouble figuring out what to do. I don't see myself grilling when I don't have company, but the "everyone bring something to throw on the grill" potluck party is about the easiest kind of food event to host in the summer.

I'm allergic to peppers and have trouble with onions, so veggie shish kebabs don't hold much appeal for me either, unfortunately.

Well I decided to pop into my FLGS, because I was in central anyway, and they had a copy of Cyberpunk 2.0.2.0.! I mean, I know it's been back in print for a little bit, but I missed it the last time they've had a copy in and I've been trying to get a decently priced copy for literally years. While I understand that the rules aren't incredibly well balanced and that it very much suffers from the Decker/Netrunner problem it's still oozing with style that you don't really see in modern cyberpunk games (and it can fit nicely alongside Shadowrun 3e in my collection).

I mean, there's a lot of great stuff in here, from the art, to the lifepath system, to the setting information itself. I'm really glad I managed to get it before they sold out again.

"Everyone bring something to throw on the grill" is potentially enough to justify a pretty basic charcoal grill (the cheap ones), especially if you host parties. As for the shish kebabs there's always potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, and a few other options though peppers and onions being out really does hurt the options there.

On an unrelated note, I have survived another Pi Day. Every year I throw an all-ages-invited Pi Day party at the k-12 school where I work, and it has very much turned into an Elementary School Thing over the years, because high schoolers are mostly too cool for voluntary attendance at math parties even if there's food. I finally wised up and started asking for parent volunteer helpers last year, which has helped, but there is definitely a reason why I do not teach elementary school and usually work with older students.

I am now celebrating "at home with a bottle of wine day". I may celebrate it again tomorrow evening!

The greatest argument of the century was probably in one of the roleplaying game sections, so I probably havent seen it, but I think the greatest argument in the OotS section might have been the "Morally Justified" discussion. This one went on for two threads and wasn't really that toxic, but it left quite a mark on the subforum for years to come, both in references and changes in mod rulings.
