So I was having some fun worldbuilding with a friend, and we decided to do a fairytale themed world, and we got on to how magic works, and decided there should be a cost. Now in fairy tale style magic, that cost is often trading something of value to The Beneficiary personally. Their firstborn, their true love, or their deepest desire. Some similar motif.
What I was wondering is how that could be mechanically implemented in a system. Can you have such a rule when one character might sequentially declare and murder their 'true loves' for power? How can a GM unbiasedly adjudicate that? I know Unknown Armies has at least one such thing in Entropomancers, with what they have to risk to get a greater charge.
Does anyone else have experience or ideas about this kind of mechanic?
