Just over three hundred years ago, the nation of Grymsol was first founded in the name of the dark god Nerull. It started as a single city, rapidly overrun by undead, but over the course of 200 years, slowly expanded into a true nation. But, the Grymsol has not continued its expansion since the beginning of the hundred year war with the neighboring country of Falgan, a theocracy worshiping Vecna. The war may soon be ending however, as rumors are circulating that king Yol wishes to make a final push and exterminate the Falgan heretics once and for all.

Our story begins at Hylle keep, far from the warfront, but a mere 15 miles from the border of the Nation of Three Rivers. More specifically, we are in the stone office of Sir Vrailan, a vassal of the keep’s lord. Sir Vrailan is an imposing man. Incredibly tall and thin, but with a noticeable feeling of raw power, wearing a skintight black bodysuit and long dark cloak. Behind him on the wall hangs a massive blade, far too large to be considered a mere greatsword, and a blank white mask. In front of him is an old but sturdy oak desk, which you all are standing before. None of you know why you were called, but he does not look happy to see you.

((im going to wait for at least most of the party (bartman seems to be offline) to describe their character's current state before i continue, to let everyone have a chance to make a first impression))

Kranz calmly wears a polite, confident smile with his hands behind his back, regarding the man respectfully.

Sir Vrailan stands up from his chair and sighs. “I had asked lord Froma for an elite team of specialists. What I got, was you four. Two untested recruits so newly risen there’s still grave dirt on you, a record of misbehavior a mile long, and a ****ing Necro of all things. He seems to think you have potential, but im not so sure, so we’re going to give you a bit of a test run. Nothing too difficult, so you all should have no problem if you’re as good as Froma thinks.” He then pauses for a moment. “and, I suppose, if you manage to **** up enough to die, I might be able to request someone new. Win-win for me.”
He pulls out a map and points to Hylle keep.
“King Yol has a constant demand for troops to join the front lines. Which means, we need a constant supply. You four are going to go to this location.” he points to about 15 miles south west of the keep just past the border. “there’s a small thorp there, and you’re going to be doing a bit of “recruiting”. I don’t care how you manage it, but you need to bring as many as possible here to be transformed into ghouls. Might as well bring any dead, while you’re at it. Give the necromancers something to do. Any questions?”

JNAProductions
2019-03-04, 07:49 PM
Ashley raises her hand. Do we have any information on the thorp? Do they have walls, do they have a militia, are they protected by the royal military, or anything like that?

Alucard 109
2019-03-04, 07:56 PM
according to our scouts, there is only a small militia guarding the town. the worst you should have to deal with is the local priest, of which there is only one

Ashley nods. Okay, thanks! she says, smiling. She hopes that Vrailan will cheer up a little-being dead is no reason to be so dour!

Interesting. What do we know about the priest?

Actually, good question! Ashley says. Because if he's the "shelter the weak and diseased" type, I could TOTALLY pass myself off as a leper or something, get into his home, and then WHAM! Knife to the back of the face!

ScrubbusofYore

He looks over at her a little.
Not how I would go about it, but you've got the right enthusiasm.

Alucard 109
2019-03-04, 08:09 PM
Vrailan looks almost impressed. not a bad idea... we believe he worships Pelor, the sun god. Pelor's clerics are known for being particularly goody two shoes, but they're also known for their burning hatred of undead

ScrubbusofYore
2019-03-04, 08:11 PM
And just their burning of undead. He may have a particularly potent Turning capability. We should be on watch for that. Disable it, if we can.

Alucard 109

I like the face-stabbing idea myself, Ashley says. Alternatively, what if we just lit everything on fire? We might have to prepare a few "safe" trails, but that'd be easy to set up an ambush along... Man, this is gonna be fun!

Alucard 109
2019-03-04, 08:24 PM
Vrailan gives Ashley a blank look. I think you may have forgotten that the point of this is recruitment. bring as many of them back alive as possible, and just burning down the town could destroy the bodies, gaining us nothing

ScrubbusofYore

I'm required to give you these, two, single person, black out tents and a bag of rats, because apparently you folks are completely incapable of taking care of yourselves. I relinquished all of my funding to the party, and fully expected them to make the purchase! I thought it was handled! XD

I specifically put the remainder of the group in charge of funding, as Eldryn set his sights on a Cap of Disguise. Given as my coin was now in their hands, I expected my colleagues to be aware of what needed to be purchased, as it had been stated several times. So...you are correct. I am to blame. For trusting anyone but myself with basic tasks.
Kranz's demeanor is a bit soured.

Eldryn joins the party as they walk, having been directed there by the Lord. He had been out looking into the possibility of having his former king raised, but their apparent new Lord didn't seem to enthused about having a risen king who might take his place in Nerull's service. He had been criticised for his tardiness, but he didn't take offence, since it was in a good cause, and since he was used to the caprice of the higher classes.

He wore a cap on his head, which seemed a little incongruous with the rest of his clothing, but not terribly so. "I am Eldryn. Sorry I have been so late, but it was unavoidable. I have been given the outline of our mission, and the threats we face in it. I must say, my hat is magical, and can disguise me as a member of the living. I can probably get in close enough to the Pelor priest to be able to kill him quickly and fairly quietly."

Rather than have everyone detail the plot again, I will just make the assumption that someone brings me up to speed.

The party walks tirelessly through the moonlit night, unhindered by the limitations of living flesh. The forest is quiet, woodland predators having long since become used to more dangerous beings than themselves stalking the night. You eventually come across a dried river bed which you remember from Vrailan’s map as the official border between Grymsol and the nation of three rivers. Were it still flowing, it would have been a trial in of itself, but now it makes for simple crossing. You move on. An hour before dawn, the settlement comes into view.

Really? I thought the spike trap could use a welcome mat reading 'We love our mortally challenged friends!'
Kranz breathes for a second.

I guess I got my hopes up that it might be something more than a simple trap. Perhaps the other end of an escape route, or a bunker of sorts. But hey, Occam's Razor's a bitch sometimes.

Eldryn shrugs, then says, "If you are willing to take the risk, then so be it. We will meet at the campsite. Good luck." He then takes the tents, and heads off to find a good place to erect them, far enough from town that they shouldn't be immediately seen and investigated by the townsfolk, but close enough that they can get to the town quickly.

Daniel thought of something. "We need to think of a plan." Daniel was thinking very hard to come up with a plan.

ScrubbusofYore
2019-03-05, 06:58 PM
You see Daniel, a plan requires intelligence. Intelligence requires espionage. So, we will develop a plan after we successfully infiltrate the town. We shouldn't dawdle, though. I imagine our superiors will make a mockery of us if we take very long to dismantle an underpopulated peasant village. We'll need to combine finesse with speed, and hope we strike the balance effectively.

But, on to more serious matters! I'm thinking something like this, she says. I'll go into town, pretending to be a leper. I'll go for the priest, ask for sanctuary, and wait for him to sleep. Then... STABBING TIME!

ScrubbusofYore
2019-03-05, 10:22 PM
Well firstly...yes. Those dasies are lovely.
He smiles genuinely, having a legitimate appreciation for their simplistic beauty.
Secondly, I actually have a better idea. This priest is highly likely to be a tough cookie. Not the type to go down in a mundane stroke, even well placed. ScrubbusofYore

Kranz's eyes pulse red as he focusses his breathing. The very air grows tense as he poises himself for his maneuver. In a moment, he then relaxes, casually throwing his sword into the air, as it spins a few times. As it becomes close to landing in front of him, he hops off the ground, spinning several times in almost an instant, and kicking his sword(dealing 18 damage). It sounds almost like a shotgun blast as his foot rends the air, and shatters his sword into thousands of tiny flecks of shrapnel, launching them in a wave in the general direction away from camp and the town. He slides his foot into the ground as he lands, steam rolling off his foot as purple lightning dimly crackles up and down his body. He stands straight, poised from landing cleanly on his feet, but it's obvious from his steady breathing and expression that that took just about all of his effort and attention.

Thank you, Ashley...it is...by far the most impressive thing I can do at this moment. But it is ultimately a mere parlor trick. We will need much more than muscle and vigor to fell our foe. Our entire squad must remain vigilant and committed...but I believe I should be the one to deliver the killing blow. Steel has an average tensile strength of 841 Megapascals, while human skin boasts a meek 20. If I get to him in his sleep...what I did to that blade will be put to shame.

ScrubbusofYore
2019-03-05, 11:24 PM
Hey, I plan to get solid into all the Knowledge skills when the opportunity presents itself, let me establish my character as the know-it-all while we're doing the Character Establishing Moments. XD
Heh. Then? Call it open season. The villagers are weak, and easily cowed by terror. We could turn them all ourselves, or intimidate them into being led to slaughter while parading the corpse of their beloved savior in the streets. Although...it is pretty rudimentary as far as a "plan" goes. So, if you've any better suggestions, I'm certainty open.

I like that idea! The parade thing-the living scare so easily, after all... Ashley says, trailing off a little. But I think that Vra... Vray... Vrack... the boss wanted them to be ghouls, so we shouldn't make them all spawn.

ScrubbusofYore
2019-03-05, 11:39 PM
Vrailan. And yes, that is a fine point indeed. I assume the ones giving the orders don't much care what kind of undead we bring back, but the orders themselves do. And of course, the better we satisfy the conditions of our task, the better soldiers we prove.

Alucard 109

Eldryn listened carefully, then chipped in with, "I think a parade is a bad idea. It will just draw attention to us, and if even one villager escapes, which is likely, then our attempt at secrecy will have totally failed. We have to be more circumspect. Go in quietly and kill the priest, yes, since he is a direct threat to us. But the villagers need to be led rather than simply terrorised. Though fear will undoubtedly prove useful in leading them."

ScrubbusofYore
2019-03-06, 09:04 AM
...of course a parade is a bad idea. Parading is a verb. I meant flaunt his corpse. Galavant it. But you see, our only reason for secrecy is the acquisition of additional intelligence, and the element of surprise against the only foe with the strength to resist. However, I do believe that the villagers will be more compliant if their gallant protector is...shown mercy.
Kranz wears a sly grin.

JNAProductions

So what's the plan? Ashley asks, a touch confused.

ScrubbusofYore
2019-03-06, 11:34 AM
So, any old thwack to the spine is liable to completely kill him, right...? If we get lucky...a shot to the chest will badly destroy his ribs. I might mess it up and punch through his chest, in which case we revert to Plan A, but if I land it just so, he'll be badly incapacitated. Rendered completely helpless. He may require medical attention after the fact, but that's a small price to pay. We have two options from there, depending: We can take the time consuming, but safe route of hauling him back alone, having him turned from living to undead, Pelor to Nerull, and come back with him disguised exactly like he was before, as he and us pose as saviors, leading the villagers to new shelter. His going missing will of course be explained by this expedition. However, if we want to speed matters along, we can just round the villagers up, and display their cleric to them, showing them that of course, nobody has the strength to oppose us, but of course, compliance will be met with mercy, as we have spared their protector. From there, fear will be more justified as a means of control, as they will see we are capable of mercy, enticing them to comply. And then...? Our superiors get some s i p p .

ScrubbusofYore

Perhaps...when I am ready to accept remorse for the ones I have hurt...I will be worthy of his forgiveness. Until then...for what I've done...perhaps may still have to do, orders demanding...I can only mourn the person I've failed to be. The man who could shed those tears. Alucard 109
2019-03-06, 10:49 PM

If nobody's watching the front, I'll do that. If they are, pit it is. Either way, I'll leave a note on his door explaining his inevitable absence, saying he has come with us to speak with my superiors on important diplomatic matters in hopes of banging out the more complex elements of a potential alliance. He, of course, could not write this note, as he left in excitement and haste at our proposition, but I was sure to send one of my non-essential personnel from camp to leave it in his stead as not to slow us down, and as such, he likely straggles behind our travelling group. I also make sure to take his gear with us when I pack up and leave, as he'll be needing it when we re-insert him, and it will further decrease suspicion.

Eldryn was continuing to watch what was going on from his hiding place, and he saw Kranz come running away from the village, jumping the pit and fleeing the soldiers. That didn't look like a good sign, though the priest didn't come out trying to raise the alarm. So maybe Kranz was successful after all, but things went bad after that. He saw him heading for the campsite, so Eldryn returned to the camp, timing his arrival alongside that of Kranz, so he could hear firsthand what happened.

ScrubbusofYore
2019-03-07, 02:30 PM
You all need to take Brolo, and go. I'm going back in to smooth things over because we still have a chance at this. They saw something fleeing, but it's dark, so it's not likely they saw it was me. If I can sneak back in, I can un**** things just fine, but if I get caught snooping, I'll need to sell you guys out, so leave the tents as evidence. Or whatever other parts of camp you can leave that I can pack up alone. And for all that is good and holy, be gentle with the man. We need him alive for the plan, and he is horrifically injured. If you so much as carry him wrong, he could die.

paradox26
2019-03-07, 02:35 PM
Eldryn wonders what exactly happened in the town, but keeps his questions quiet. He has to trust the man on the job. So he simply nods, and prepares to leave the camp again. "How are we going to get the priest out of the village? He is still in there, we are out here, and the roused guards are in between us."

There seems to be some confusion then. I checked some posts back, and the DM mentioned that he was being placed into his bed and set up so no one would know he was hurt

Eldryn takes Brolo carefully under one arm, getting one of the others to take him by the other arm. This should put less strain on his body, and if they are seen, it will look like they are carrying a drunk companion rather than a grievously wounded enemy priest. He immediately starts to head off back towards their headquarters, relying on Kranz to straighten things out with the villagers, and hopefuly to get them to follow along where their priest has gone in advance, using some sort of story.

As long as you don't do something dangerous while carrying him, you're safe. Scrub got a free pass in the confusion, but normally jumping the pit could have opened his wounds

There are also four non-goblin patrons at the moment, a half-orc, an elf, and two humans, one unarmored and bald, the other heavily armored.
The man escorting you addresses the armored man captain Harvey! This man says he saw Father Brolo jump the pit and that he might have been chasing a vampire
The now named captain Harvey looks at kranz

Now to return to the campsite and see what Kranz is up to. He takes off, moving quickly back towards the camp, but diverting just before he gets there, then coming in from a different direction, just in case Kranz and the villagers have gone back and discovered the camp. Ashley, thinking on her feet, decides to integrate herself into the group. She first moves away from her companions, just a short distance, so she can be found without them.

She then sets herself carefully, so her ankle is at the worst possible angle, and then lets her entire weight fall onto it, breaking it (or at least screwing it up something fierce). She screams in pain, loud and sharp, as she collapses to the ground. Oh gods, what's happening? It hurts, it hurts, it hurts!

PSA: at this point I've given up on preventing Scrub from metagaming completely, so I've instead worked with him to limit it in exchange for making it a plot point in the future. He is allowed one imediately relevant (non plot related) bit of knowledge per day. He just used it by knowing a type of undead that perfectly fit the type of bluff he was trying to sell (even though nobody else would know that, so it doesn't actually help any)
