The war spear
Two handed, heavy, martial weapon
1d12 pierce
Throwing range of 10/30 ft
Requires only one hand when thrown.
This is basically a greataxe plus yklwa, but would it help make a mechanical reason to choose versatility over consistency?

You're effectively losing 0.5 damage to gain 10/30 feet in throwing. I'd take it. But throwing something with both hands just seems so...weird. I'd probably say that you can't reasonably throw it without having a free hand.

That's what I had in mind, just didn't think to say only one hand to throw. My bad.

This is strictly better than greataxe. And nominally better than greatsword/maul

Agreed. I'd go with a 1d10 damage die-- that + one property (throwing) puts it on part with stuff like the glaive.

If we're opening the can of worms that is real world weapons (:smalleek:), a heavy spear that does as much damage as a great axe should be about as (un)balanced for throwing as a great axe.

I wouldn't blink at a martial weapon War Spear that was 1d8 Piercing, Versatile (1d10), 5 lbs, and 3 GP though.

That's basically a cheaper, bulkier Longsword and it fits real-world use of spears as well or better than the PHB Spear.

I'm all for a heavy piercing weapon. But I also would want one that is not a straight upgrade to the great axe.

A 3lb Hand Crossbow, able to be reloaded and fired 5 times in 6 seconds with special training, deals as much damage as a Hand Axe. Sometimes, realism isn't what the game is going for.

Thanks guys, the pike just didn't fit what I had in mind. What do you think about taking the throwing property away and making the damag 3d4? Been thinking about that too.

Deals slightly more damage than 2d6, basically a 1d14 in terms of damage, which is too good. If it's going to have the Thrown feature, it needs to be worse. 1d10 seems like the next best thing if you're going to throw it.

Well that would make it both better than the Greataxe still, but also the Maul and Greatsword.

It doesn't seem to me like a move in the right direction. More of a lateral move.

True, there is the consistency part though. A 3d4 will be much closer to 7-8 than anything else. I think I'll keep it at 1d12. A spear should have spiky damage, pun intended.

Just letting you know, we have a Homebrew subforum, found here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?15-Homebrew-Design), for this kind of stuff.

A war spear is a pike, no?

A war spear is a pike, no?

That was not what the OP intended, because of the thrown ability.
That is what folks are devolving it into.
