You all go about your days just like every other day. This one felt different though. Mayor Raúl Kennon was going to have a live press release addressing the rumors of zombies.

Two years ago you would of laughed hysterically at the thought of a public official speaking about zombies. Then sightings started happening around the world, videos posted nearly weekly and even whispers of people around you. Times have changed and everyone tried to ignore the elephant in the room.

Raúl Kennon was the first public official to address the issues at hand. He has been a very unorthodox Mayor but he always brought results.

Noon. That was when the press conference was scheduled on the steps of city hall.

Go ahead and describe your actions before noon. Eventually, you should end up at city hall either on purpose or by accident. Sorry about the minor railroad but I need y'all to be here at the "start"

The morning's classes had been dull, to say the least. He made it through math (seriously, who decided 8 AM was prime time for Statistics?) but at least art had gone well. Benji had gotten a decent bit done with character design on top of his current graded project - a class mural, they were still in the designing stages and his section had been approved, at least. With each class being an hour and a half long, and Japanese to start at 12:15, that gave him just enough time to grab something for lunch, breeze by the town square for a bit to see what all the fuss was about, and then get to class no more than, what, ten or fifteen minutes late? It was manageable, at least, so long as he brought all his books with him.

He scarfed down a greasy burger and some fries at the cafe just on the corner of Main and Washington Ave. The place was pretty crowded as opposed to normal, and Benji could only assume it was because of the meeting that would be taking place less than a block away. Interested faces, people speaking in hushed voices about what all of this could possibly be about, if the rumors were true... more than one person on their phones, watching the videos out of Brazil and Russia. Benji was familiar with those, he'd seen them a couple weeks ago. But they were only just now hitting the mainstream media, weren't they?

Benji finished up his lunch, scooping his backpack onto his shoulders and heading for the city hall. Maybe he'd be early enough to get a decent place in the crowd.

Ace woke up this morning as he did most others, with sunlight streaming into his face and a faint headache pounding behind his eyes. He grumbled, rolling over and shielding his face from the light, fully prepared to try and catch another couple hours of sleep--but couldn't shake the nagging feeling he was forgetting something. It came to him like a bucket of water to the face--the meeting. His eyes snapped open and he grabbed his clock. 11:15. Still time.

He kicked his way out of bed, picking his way across the scattered leftovers, clothes, and other assorted mess. Staring disapprovingly at himself in the mirror, he searches the scattered clothing for his most presentable looking suit and puts it on, running his fingers through his hair to tame it at least a little bit. He grabs a box of Chinese leftovers--he's pretty sure they aren't more than a few days old--and scarfs them down, gathering up various pictures, accounts, and other files. He's done his research for this meeting. Over the last few days--the last few weeks, really, ever since the reports started coming out--he'd been combing whatever sources he could find for information. Quickly tossing the scattered documents back into their folder--including the odd set of official-looking reports that had shown up at his door a few days ago--he started to dart out of the door, but paused for a moment. After a bit of consideration, he tucked his pistol into his belt, making sure it was hidden by his coat, and left his black duffel bag by the door in case he needed it. He rushed out, picking his way through the streets toward city hall. He had a way to go, but still managed to be one of the first in the assembling crowd.

Today wasn't a day for criminal activity. Nando started the day slow. Breakfast. Workout. Pace. Still 9am. Still no more news. He turns the TV on in an attempt to fill the silence. In a bout of paranoia, he crams a stack of cash into his briefcase. Shower. Get dressed. For what? He had no plans. The Mayor's speech might be a good place to get some info.

Right as he prepares to leave, Nando turns around and pulls open his bed drawer, tucking the pistol into his briefcase. He was respected "businessman". If he didn't give them a reason to search, he should be fine.

If nothing else, the events immediately outside town would be explained today. He arrives with the majority of the crowd, walking at a leisurely pace despite his agitation. Listening to conversations around him, whispers about what was going to be announced. He hangs around the edges of the forming crowd. Better to remain on the outside of a crowd rather than the center.

Just in case.

Leaving the house with his newly purchased baseball bat and backpack on his back. He walks down the road. Awaiting a way to forget about his pain and suffering he walks. Not bothered by the events around him he passes by a small commotion by the town hall. Looking briefly he leaves.

Not bothering about the “info” as it wouldn’t help him much in any way he believes he continues his soul searching journey! A few hours pass as it arrives to noon a bit sweaty he decides to find some shade only to here commontion in front of him. Walking forward he notices it’s the same town hall!

Dammit he said under his breath. Realizing he walked around in a giant circle and wasted his time. Arriving as one of the latest participants he finds a nice secluded spot in the shade to sit down and watch the meeting as he tries to calm down and not think to much. Hopefully able to one day be able to leave this forsaken and cursed town he thought to himself. As he looked up for the start of the speech.

You hear a few watches chirp and beep in the crowd. Its noon.

Mayor Kennon walks up to the podium and clears his throat to gain the attention of the crowd.

Ladies and gentlemen of Jacksonville. We live in troubled times. The threats we face on a daily basis continue to grow but, I'm not here to talk about terrorism, guns, gang violence, or drugs.

I'm here, today in front of you, to talk about the newest set of threats: Zombies. Those who chose to stay in our beautiful city, I thank you, each and everyone of you have proven a point about Jacksonville, we're not just a city but a community willing to stick together in terrible times.

I'm going to be completely honest with all of you. These zombies have finally come to Jacksonville. you hear reporters start asking dozens of questions all at the same time. Its nearly impossible to separate the voices, its just loud yelling that blurs together.

Mayor Kennon calmly moves his hands in a downward motion, motioning for the reporters to calm down.

Last night, there where reports of zombie sightings in the poorer areas of the city. Specifically, the so called "gang controlled territory". We do not know how or when this happened but it dosnt matter. We, the people of Jacksonville, have the beginnings of a zombie outbreak.

Originally, I was going to talk about what we know about the zombies. And I will continue that line of discussion. However, there is no need to panic. In the early morning hours, I called the national guard and they are currently placing a quarantine around the city. That means no one enters or leaves until they have a full medical examination and searched. This is simply a means of keeping this problem HERE. We WILL NOT be the reason this outbreak spreads to other cities.

I ask all of you to do a few things, common sense things. Do not approach anyone you suspect to be infected, Do not try to kill suspected people who may or may not be infected.

Call Jacksonville PD with any sightings of the infected, they are highly trained professionals who will deal with the situation according to the procedures set by the joint efforts of the police department and military commander.

Finally, there will be a curfew. Between the hours of 10 pm and 6 am, you are to remain indoors. Both the police department and national guard will be patrolling the streets and anyone caught breaking curfew will be detained and examined for any signs of infection.

At this point in time, I will start answering questions in an orderly fashion.

No. Hell no, this was a bad situation. Quarantine was one thing. He could normally ride that out. Actual zombies aren't meant to be real. Forget the damn scam, this was life threatening. People were going to riot, take advantage of the mess to do what they wanted. People panicked bad enough when they heard a tornado was coming these parts - and that's just the threat of no electricity and water. This was the apocalypse on the verge of -

Nando takes a deep breath. He needed supplies. He needed to make a decision while remaining flexible. Barricading himself into his apartment was a death sentence. Gunning it to leave the city meant he'd have to leave behind everything. Carrying as much cash as he had on him would bring too many questions.

He was thankful now he had stuck to the outside edges of the crowd. He looks about the square, trying to pinpoint the nearest open shop. Time to spend some of this money...

Godric hearing the speech shrugs slightly. He encountered one earlier in the day and is confident he can handle them one on one. Looking around seeing the uncertain faces around him and people start to panic he thinks.

Maybe it’s a good thing my family is all gone. At least the won’t have to suffer this crisis. suddenly a sharp pang of grief strikes his heart clutching his chest trying his best to holding in his tears he walks into a nearby building to control his emotions. Not being all to graceful as he moves. But at the edge of the crowd he isn’t pinned down all that well.

When he had started the research for his book, Benji had found out a little more than he had wanted to know about these creatures. Even so - he never expected real life experience. Sure, he had been certain the rumors would be confirmed eventually by someone in power, when they became too hard to ignore and sweep aside. But he had never expected them to be confirmed here.

"F*ck," he whispered under his breath, the only fitting word he could think of to describe the situation. The expletive drew the attention of several people nearby, and Benji had the grace to blush - his parents had always schooled him against cursing - but quite honestly, no one around him seemed to disagree with his summation of the situation. He could hear the reporters yelling for attention, and several people in the crowd began to panic, but Benji just... stood there, trying to absorb this information and what it meant.

He couldn't help but notice, nearby, was a rugged looking man in a rumpled outfit, who looked no more surprised about this than Benji did. The blue-haired youth turned his attention to the man, and gave a small quirk of his brow. Not enough to engage conversation. But enough to indicate he noticed that the man had, apparently, also been expecting news like this.

Putting Benji near Ace, just for fun.

Ace's eyes grew wide. He'd expected evasion, double-talk, dancing around the issue without ever actually admitting what the source was. At least, that was his experience the city's officials. To hear the mayor just come out and say that there was a zombie outbreak was shocking, moreso than the announcement itself. "I knew it," he mutters to himself. "I knew they'd run into something that they couldn't cover up..." He hears the blue-haired young man curse near him, and takes notice of the fact that he seems unsurprised as well. Perhaps he'd be someone to talk to more--at least he'd probably be easy to find.

Ace's emotions ran between smug satisfaction, analytical detachment, and blind panic. Finally there was proof of the supernatural he'd known was out there all along--but they were also locked down in a city full of zombies. Trying to skirt curfew or the quarantine was probably not the best of ideas, but he wasn't thrilled about being stuck in a city full of undead. Plenty of questions ran through his head--did they spread by infection? Bite or airborne? Or were they created? If it was infection they were in for a bad time, but then if there was a witch going about creating zombies that caused its out set of problems. Headshots or body shots? Walkers? Runners? How was their sight, smell? Did they decay? For the moment, however, he kept to himself, waiting to see what others in the crowd asked. He wasn't sure if the mayor and other officials would take questions from him in the first place.

By complete coincidence, Lydia would be off the day the Mayor decides to address the situation officially. Nevertheless, with a cup of coffee and an egg-muffin at 7 am, and her apartment maintained in an orderly fashion not long after, she was more than ready to take on the day's challenges.

Or, so she thought.

Lydia had prepared to be at the City Hall just in time for the conference, even with the intent to walk there, hoping to keep herself ready for her duties. She'd always tried to maintain a professional manner, even when not on duty. Even with her couple of carry-on bags, she was always prepared for just about any curve ball life threw at her.

Then the rumors were verified.

"No..." She'd had her concerns. She had her doubts, and her fears. Cases discussed while working long nights, or the more mysterious (and grizzly) injuries she and the rest of the paramedics were encountering as they continued to drill into the night. But having the final, horrific truth, laid bare for all to witness. The maw of insanity thrown open, its screams ringing for all to hear...

As Mayor Kennon went further into details on the plans for the city to maintain this disaster, Lydia realized that, in her petrified shock, she had dropped not only the granola bar that she had been munching, but also her water bottle. Bending down quickly to scoop both up, she closed closer to the heart of the meeting, both to hear of the queries of the people, and to heart what would most likely become her future marching orders, almost waiting for her phone to go off with a call from work. On her way, she made sure to scan the crowd around her, noting signs of panic already forming as people vented their feelings. She could not blame them. She herself had already encountered, if second hand, some of the Hell they might all be about to go through.

Question after question pours in on Mayor Kennan's head, some coming from journalists, many from concerned citizens - but all of them at once. The man does his best to answer the ones he hears as calmly and collectedly as he can, not wanting to incite further chaos. "All pertinent information about these creatures will be distributed in a news bulletin that is being worked on by the Jacksonville Press as we speak. For now, though, there is no cause for undue alarm. Simply abide by the curfew and the quarantine and things will remain under control," he tells the crowd in the most soothing voice he can manage. For another half hour, he continues to field questions, explaining the necessity of the quarantine, assuring the people that the town's police force are well-equipped to deal with any sort of threat the creatures could make to the populace, and again stressing the importance of the curfew and that people should not approach anyone acting strangely, but report such things directly to the police force. A hotline was being opened shortly - the number for which would also be in the bulletin to be distributed in no more than a few hours.

Finally, after another wave of panicked questions, the Mayor called an end to the meeting. It was 12:45 in the town of Jacksonville, and a bomb of information had detonated in the people's minds. The crowd continued to mill about - people talking to one another, journalists calling out more questions as the Mayor retreated, others calling their loved ones and explaining the situation. What was the next step for our heroes?

Ace's mind is still reeling from the information. He lets the questions fire off, not quite confident enough to speak up in front of the entire crowd. Instead, once the mayor concludes the session, he begins picking his way closer through the crowd, clutching his folder. "Excuse me! Mayor Kennon? Excuse me!" He felt the mayor would probably just brush him off, but he had to make an attempt.

The Mayor does, indeed, start off ignoring the calling of his name. Ace wasn't the only one shouting after him, after all. But after a moment, it seems that he recognizes the particular voice calling out to him. He turns - a look in his eyes reading 'not this again' - but at the same time... this one time... Ace had been right, hadn't he, about all this mess?
"Mr. Harlow," the mayor says. 'Mr.', not 'Detective'. Not anymore. "What is it?"

Nando is, of course, all charm. Not much grace at the moment, but grace wasn't needed. More brute force and efficiency - he pushes his way to the back of the nearest store, filling his shopping cart with a 5 gallon water jug, a box of energy bars, a water filter, and a small hand axe, meant for camping, but it would serve in a pinch. He pushes his load to the front of the store, planning to leave with cart and all after paying. No reason to hang around after all. There were only so many hours till nightfall.

Lydia keeps a professional distance, at least at first, intent just to keep monitoring the situation, anticipating with crestfallen resignation how much worse things were going to be... but seeing the congregation stop, as the Mayor deigned to address another civilian, caught her curiosity. She closes a little closer, intent to hear what could be said that could catch Kennon's attention. Or rather, who it was that did so.

Ace draws up a bit short--he'd expected to have a much more uphill battle actually getting to talk to the man, and right at first wasn't prepared to launch into his spiel. He composed himself fairly quickly and approached, holding the folder up in front of him like a shield. "Ah, yes. I have some information. Things I've collected over the years, which might be of use to the police. And to the people, too, though it's your call if this gets put out to the public, of course..." He opens the folder and thumbs through the information. "The most important point is that they're quite resilient--headshots are the only way to be sure to put one down. Nasty habit of just keeping on coming, even if you hit them several times. They tend to travel in packs--that's why they're dangerous, mostly, it's the numbers. Where there's one, there tends to be more. And they can smell a living person from several miles away..." He glances back and forth. "Perhaps you'd like to go over this somewhere more private?"

I think it's safe to say Ace keeps duplicate records--is it okay if I say he has another copy back at his apartment? In case the mayor wants these files.

hannahbbug3

"More private, yes, indeed... that would be best," the mayor says, motioning for Ace to follow along with him as he returns to the interior of the town hall.

Meanwhile, Benji is trying to get a grip on all of this. His first thought is that he needs to call home, tell his parents and his sister... but with all the reporters here, there was no way this hadn't been televised. Still, he moved off to the side of the crowd, switching his phone over from spotify to the caller. On his way there, though, he inevitably bumped into someone, glancing up at the woman he'd sideswipped. "Sorry," he mutters.

Benjamin has just encountered Lydia! What shall happen next?
If anyone has a great idea on how to get the party together, go ahead and throw it at me! I have one, but I'm happy to hear what you guys think, as well!

Not normally the type with a nose for gossip and eavesdropping, Lydia nevertheless can't help but continue to follow along, as the man who stopped the mayor begins sharing information with him. She was on multiple minds in regard to the subject matter: skeptical at the data itself, wondering how he had obtained it, curious whether or not how what the man said ranked compared to what the authorities already knew, and almost naively wishing she could still disbelieve the day away...

And the moment she paused to take another sip from her bottle, still so heavily distracted, a figure knocks her off balance. In a flash, Lydia finds herself quite the worse for wear from her fall; her granola bar several feet away and broken into pieces, both her knees scraped in her attempt to stop herself from hitting the ground, her completely empty water bottle rolling the other way, cracked, and its contents soaking her white top. Her face was as pink as the brassiere she was wearing underneath.

"N-no. I should not have been blocking the way. P-pardon me." she replies to the boy, in a slightly more awkward breath than normal, as she starts to struggle back to her feet.

Benji really hadn't realized just how quickly he'd been moving until he'd knocked the woman sprawling. For a moment, he could do nothing but stare in shock, blinking at the scene in front of him. Suddenly, 'sorry' really didn't seem like it cut it, but Benji had never been known for his social graces. His face went as red as his natural hair color (carrot), even his ears turning with the flush. He couldn't help the glance down - wet, white shirt - but he cut his gaze away before he stared. God, Benjamin, have a little self-control!
"No, ah-" he shoved his headphones off his head quickly. He hadn't been listening to anything since the meeting started, just having the headphones on out of habit, but now that he was actually speaking to someone, he at least had the grace to look like he was listening to them. "Here," he said, offering the woman a hand up while he stared very, very pointedly at her eyes. Not anywhere else!

Ace follows Mayor Kennon inside. Things must be serious if he was actually willing to listen. Ace begins going through the rather prodigious amount of information he has, much of it contradictory--not that he seems to notice that fact, mind. He gives particular credence to that set of files that showed up at his door a few weeks ago--he still wasn't sure who had left them at his apartment, but they seemed rather official. If they were forgeries, they were rather good ones.

hannahbbug3
2019-04-12, 11:12 AM
The more Ace speaks, the more overwhelmed Kennon seems to become. There is a stolid frown on his lips as he sorts through the pile of documents the former detective places before him, trying to puzzle out if Ace is simply as paranoid as he always has been or if this information is actually useful. The facts presented about how to destroy one of the zombies, however, does seem to line up with what he already knows... he mostly stays silent as Ace speaks, knowing it's quite futile to try and interrupt the man once he starts going. However, when Ace finally finishes, he speaks only two simple words. "Thank you."

rs2excelsior
2019-04-19, 09:57 PM
Ace is somewhat unsure of how to react. He had expected something... else. What else, he didn't know, but not this quiet acceptance. The world getting turned upside down seemed to make people a bit more open-minded. Or was the mayor just humoring him, waiting to move on to something else and forget everything Ace had just said? No matter, he'd done what he could. "I'll just leave this here," he says, sliding the folder over to Mayor Kennon. "I should probably go..."

He takes his leave and looks out at the crowd, some still milling about in alarm. Where to go, though? He'd need supplies, food, and the like, in case things got worse--but he'd spent too much of what little he earned on booze. Again. Grimacing at his own lack of self restraint, he sits down for a moment to consider what to do. Ace does take note of that young man with the odd hair again, helping someone off the ground. He'd seemed particularly invested in what was going on, perhaps he'd be someone worth talking to--Ace starts making his way over. No harm in at least introducing himself.

The tangle of people in front of Nando is another hindrance to his making his way through the crowd. Still pushing his pilfered shopping cart filled with supplies, he stops short to look the few people standing still -right in his way- up and down. Flustered woman. His eyes don't linger, having an appropriate sense of circumstance. The other one, with blue hair - interesting choice - and samurai sword. He cuts his snort short as he considers the benefits of something that doesn't require ammo to wield.
"Excuse me. Coming through."
His voice is firm, though not loud. He straightens to emphasize his presence, though the ratty shopping cart detracts immediately from his attempt to do so.

All the sudden, there is a flurry of activity around Benji, and he looks up to see not only the man with the shopping cart, but the detective approaching, as well. Seems like he's gotten to a popular stop, hasn't it? "Yeah, excuse me, sorry, just trying to find a quiet place to call my parents-" he begins, only to be cut off by a shriek behind him. He turns with the others to look, staring wide eyed down the alleyway just behind the group. Stumbling out of the darkness is a man - at least, it seems to be a man, except there is black bile running down his chin, throat, and soaking his shirt. A strangled gurgle leaves the disoriented stranger, and he continues in his mindless walk forwards, getting ever closer to our group.

The police, who were nearby the scene, are immediately on alert at the scream - but none of them have a clear angle to view what is causing the panic. Thus, they are slower to react than the group, who is immediately in danger. The three nearby policeman spend their turn hurrying to the source of panic, not yet drawing their weapons but calling out for civilians to remain calm and move away from the disturbance in as orderly a form as possible.

Benji, meanwhile, seems frozen for a moment. His hand darts back to the hilt of his blade as he takes a small step backwards, eyes darting around to the others. Should he run? Or were the others also prepared to fight?

Goddammit. He wouldn't make the mistake of leaving his gun inside the briefcase again, especially with the cops being a superb example of dumbassery. At least they were making clear not to depend on them this early. He reaches for his switchblade, flicking the woefully small blade out before deciding it isn't worth it. Even if he avoided getting bitten, just getting grabbed could be bad from what he'd heard about the black stuff.
"I'm not messing with that without a gun, and I'm not pulling a gun in the middle of the town surrounded by cops. Feel free to grab the axe if you wanna be a hero."

Lydia blushes slightly more deeply as she places her slender hand into Benji's, meeting his own gaze with her soft blue eyes. "I'm sorry about all that." she says gratefully, before stopping to bend down slightly, both to dust off her short skirt, and to examine her bloody knees. Moving as little as possible in light of her compromised top, her first thought is wondering how quickly she could purchase alternate attire. Her own embarrassment increases as movement around them continues, including the man she had been so curious toward talking with the mayor.

Chaos.

The switch from demure woman ashamed of her own curves, into rescue worker ready to step into action however she could, was instantaneous. "Leave and get to your family." she says to the red-haired boy, her eyes sharp and alert. Taking the invitation of the man with the shopping cart, she rushes forward, grasping the hand-axe in the process. "I hope I'll be able to return this to you." she says to him in passing.

Hearing the rage of the first person to be ready, or foolish, to face this threat, Lydia closes on the situation. "An inch of its life won't do any good, if that's what I think it is. And if is, it touching you would be the end of yours. Leave if you value your own safety." Lydia warns him, holding the axe in both of her hands, her arms raised just above her soaked buxom bosom, all shame forgotten.

I might be taking a few liberties, so I'll allow our lovely dm to adjudicate it for me. If Lydia can do anything else after getting into position, she will delay, and wait for either the police to shoot the monster dead, or for it to approach closer. If the latter, her intent is to strike it as it approaches, preferably going for its hands if outstretched. Zombies are far less dangerous when they can't hold you down to bite you, and i reckon everyone's encountered at least a bit of zombie fiction before.

...if she's not capable of readying that, then good job me, putting the team healer in the front-line. :smalltongue: This might certainly force more cards to be played.

Ace's hand goes to his pistol, then hesitates. The police wouldn't particularly care for weapons being drawn, but... This was not a normal situation, and he didn't trust the police to put this thing down before people got hurt. And the woman who fell seemed to be ready to fight. "Get back!" he shouts to the crowd, drawing his pistol. "Zombie! Get back!" He steps up next to the axe-wielding woman, raising his pistol and waiting for a clear shot.

The zombie reacts to Godric's voice, swaying slightly as it turns to look at him. A feral hiss leaves its mouth, spattering more of the black sludge on the young man before striking him with its blunt fingernails, leaving a nice mark on his face.

Rolls on the other thread. Zombie hits Godric with a 19 and deals 2 points of damage.
Seeing the hullabaloo, the police are finally motivated to action, but not before Lydia runs forward and Ace fires off a shot.

You've got a shot. Go for it.

Ace waits for as much of the crowd to clear back as possible, but as the zombie lurches towards the angry man he squeezes off a single round, aimed at the creature's head.

Ace's shot bounces off the fire escape of the nearby building, ricocheting out of sight.

"Holy SH*T!" is Benji's eloquent response to the sound of the gun being fired and then - of course, then - the police are on the scene.

"Shots fired! Everyone down, down on the ground!" one called out.

In a matter of moments, the three officers were busily 'quarantining' those closest to the scene. Which entailed a shot through the head of the zombie and confiscating the weapons of all those nearby. Ace's gun is taken first - as well as Nando's glock, both Ace and Nando's backup weapons, and Agro's baseball bat. Lydia is... reluctantly and awkwardly patted down, and when they realize oh that blue-haired kid isn't carrying an umbrella, that's a sword, away goes the katana as well.

"You'll have to be brought in for questioning," says the officer who is collecting their items. "We need a full report of this incident, naturally - Ace Harlow, is this government issue?" the officer shakes his head and stores the pistol away with everything else. "We'll also have to get all of you throat-swabbed, perhaps quarantined for a while-"

The man ran down the list of their rights, even though this wasn't a full and official arrest, as the group - soon to be, party of adventurers - are ushered in the direction of the police station. They are instructed to put their possessions into small lockers and allowed to keep the key. There is a bit of a kerfuffle as the officer catches Benji attempting to smuggle his phone into his pocket instead of putting it in his locker, and reluctantly the young man puts that away, as well. They are then led to a holding cell until such a time as they can be interviewed.

So there you are - the five of you, all in a cell together. The room is quiet, until Benji cuts his gaze over to Ace. "You just had to open fire, didn't you?" he muttered. "You know, I bet we wouldn't be in this much trouble if you hadn't let off a shot. F*ck, I haven't even messaged my parents - they'd better let me have that one phone call if they intend to keep us here much longer," he huffs. He didn't care that Ace had probably done what was best in the heat of the moment, that it was self-defense or defense of another or anything like that. Right now, it just meant he was stuck in a cell with this lunatic... as well as an apparent bum with black goo still on his chest, a half-drenched doxy, and a man that looked like he could be a mob boss with that shaved head of his.

This is great. Just great.

Sorry for sort of railroading us a bit there, but as intimated in the OOC chat, I think it's time that we get the party together and get things rolling... and to do so, I had to drag the plot forward a bit. Didn't mean to make the police as 'op' as they seemed in that fight and they won't be in the future, but call it a deus ex machina to get us together? Hope no one minds too much!

The police did take everyone's weapons, but as demonstrated (poorly) by Benji, I will allow you guys an attempt at smuggling a couple items into the holding cell instead of putting everything in the storage locker. The policeman's perception check was a 16, so that's your DC to beat for any reasonable item to palm onto your person. As mentioned, you also get to keep the key to your locker with your possessions, but now we're all locked in a cell together.

Ace does not resist--physically at least. He does protest. Loudly. "What are you doing? There are more of those things out there! Do you think that one was here alone? And what was I supposed to do, just let it eat him?" This continues for a while, with Ace very conspicuously ignoring the question about whether the gun was actually supposed to be in his possession. His loud complaining gives way to muttered grumbles once he realizes that they are being taken in, and he seems to only be making them more annoyed. "Wouldn't you do better to make sure there aren't more attacks going on? And at least let the others go. Or is standing near me a crime now?"

At Benji's accusation Ace just gives him a sidelong glare. "I imagine if you'd been the one that thing was going for, you'd be singing a different tune, eh? The police didn't want me to shoot it, they should've been quicker. Only way to deal with these things--you let them keep going around biting people, they just get to be more of them." He gets up and paces. "I don't think they've got much to keep us here on. Clear and present danger to the public. Got a precedent a mile long for these kind of things."

Nando sighs as the shot goes off near him, dropping his suitcase and stepping away from the cart. Just his damn luck. They'd better keep his supplies safe, he just paid for those, and fingers crossed, he'd get that gun back. He's compliant with the cops - they're on edge already, and he's not looking to get shot. Besides, his false ID should hold up. Hopefully.

Sitting in the room, he listens to the boy take on the idiot who decided shooting into a crowd was a good idea. He groans at his argument for shooting, mumbling the first few words under his breath. "Of course. A vigilante type. Hey man, let the cops do their thing. You're lucky you didn't kill a normal person. When the cops come back, let me do the talking. I get the feeling they're already not fans of you, and I don't plan to end up in jail because you pissed them off."
He points at the man who thought it was a good idea to take it on with a baseball bat.
"Please, take that shirt off and burn it first chance. That black stuff is infectious, and I don't want to be stuck in here with a walking dead man."
He pulls off his blazer as he speaks, handing it to the only woman in the room with a raised eyebrow, but no further elaboration.
"Katana guy, we can call your parents. Just sit tight, don't do anything stupid."

That should hold down fort. Hopefully till release. The less the pot is stirred, the less the police will look into that ID, the less likely they are to notice. He takes another look around. A college kid who thinks it's a good idea to carry a sword around, a woman who can't decide if she's embarrassed or an axe swinging idiot, a trigger happy, probably sleep deprived man, and a man who thinks it's a good idea to hit someone with a baseball bat because they drooled on you.

Damnit.

As the spittle lands onto his jacket Godric’s expression darkens. As the man slams into him he only takes a slight half step back but he isn’t hurt in the slightest. Raising his bat fueled with anger he was about to strike as a bullet lands close by him. Shocked he steps back looking at where the bullet flew from.

Thinking to himself What’s going on here. as the cops quickly takes away his bat leading him away. I didn’t hit him. There not charging me with assault I hope... As they shoot the man who ruined his coat in the head his eyes widens.

As he is in the cell listening to the commotion as the man tells him to take off and burn his coat he is a bit confused. I tried to fight a zombie? How did it even get there. Weren’t we in the center of town? Hearing someone mentioning burning his coat and saying it’s infected he is a bit shocked. Quickly taking off his coat revealing his muscular body underneath he slides his coat through the bars throwing it as far as he can. Trying to make the situation the best possible.

So... Godrics voice trickles out a bit. I think we’re all kinda screwed now. If a zombie made it that far into town. Sitting in a jail cell isn’t the best place to be. I’ve seen some zombie shows. We might want to just have a rough plan in case we end in a world war z thing. From what I’ve seen these things snowball quickly. Godric says trying to get over the shock and sorts through everything that’s happened today waiting for the others imput.

As an afterthought he says Oh yea my names Godric. What’s about yours?

"My name's not 'Katana Guy,' it's Benjamin," the neon-haired boy clarifies for Nando. Just as quickly, Godric is passing around introductions. "Benjamin Alexander, Benji to my friends - though, none of you are, so don't know why I told you that," he says with a huff, blowing his long hair back out of his bangs. He looks over to Godric once again when he throws away his coat and brings up the fact that a jail cell is not the best place to be in the middle of the sort of outbreak they're caught in. Maybe the young man - who looks just about his same age - isn't as dense as he first appeared to be when assaulting a zombie with a baseball bat.

"We'll just have to hope the police are competent enough to not let this place get overrun while we're locked in here. That would just be so typical, though, wouldn't it? And based on the luck we all seem to be having today..." he grumbles pessimistically.

Content to stand to the side, Lydia remained quiet... at first. Content to not contest too much of the actions of the police, her only immediate move was to full remove her soaking wet shirt, and hold it bundled in front of her to preserve her modesty. As the boys argued, she kept her back to the bars, surreptitiously watching for the movements and attention of the guards. Once she felt sure the coast was clear, she turned back to the group at large. "It would be best to treat others as friends, or at least not as enemies, Benji." she replies. "In times such as these, working together should do more good than clinging to self interest." Still holding her jumbled up top to hide her chest, she pulls out a small white box from within it-unmistakably a professional grade first aid kit she'd managed to smuggle away. "My name is Lydia Miranda, and I hope we might all get along swimmingly." she continues with a slightly coy smile as she gives the kit a shake. "And, actually... Godric, would you mind if I take a look at you, and that coat? I've encountered these creatures indirectly at the hospital, and I'd like to learn a little more about what we're dealing with." she asks of him, crossing over and kneeling before him, hoping he'd accept her invitation and stay seated.

As Lydia doesn't accept his blazer, he shrugs and puts it back on. Wasn't his place to judge why she wanted to stay like this with nothing but men. "Well Benjamin, Godric, Lydia, lets make the best of this." He leans against the bars to the room to try and catch a glimpse outside the hallway. "No clue what a rough plan would entail, besides staying off the zombie radar."

He turns around, leaning against the bars and sliding down to a squat.

"I'm Nando. Honestly, I just want to take my supplies and head home."

As Nando re-situates himself, Lydia only then realizes what he'd been attempting to offer her, caught up in her concerns about the infected and their current predicament. Red creeping across her face again, she wordlessly keeps one arm holding her blouse and first-aid kit in front of her, and reaches towards him with her other, unwilling to make eye-contact.

"I don't know if staying hunkered down would be enough to keep you safe, no matter how well prepared you might be. This can't be allowed to spread, but if it passes by more than just direct contact, this could quickly become a nation wide epidemic. Maybe worse." she replies somberly.

Since he already tossed his coat outside if it’s close enough he will attempt to reach it and give it to her. He nods allowing Lydia to look over him in case there is any black goo or anything of the such on him as well. If the worst case does happen should we at least try getting a police officer over here to let us out or give us a run down? As I see it they don’t have a reason to keep us locked up. Well at least a few of us. Looking to the man who shot his gun off in a public area. You might be the only one they could hold. But for the rest of us they can’t keep us locked up. So it’s a valid excuse to get us out. At least we might be able to get a phone call. We can gather a little info this way as well. Godric says just brainstorming some ideas. Not really organizing it just stating whatever pops into his head.

"Frankly, it's about time the government caught up with what's going on," Benjamin says, not responding to Lydia's suggestion that he try and be a little more friendly. What reason was there to do such a thing? It wasn't like he was going to end up stuck with these people for any long period of time. And besides that, he was just super pissed at being here in the first place. He scuffed the toe of his sneaker across the floor. Ace opens his mouth to respond angrily at Nando, but snaps it shut. Thing is, he was probably right. Ace was likely to just get them in even more trouble. He sits down in a corner to himself, just listening for a moment.

He snorts at Benji's comment. "You'd be amazed at the ability of this department to ignore what's going on under their noses. I wouldn't be too surprised if there were still people who'll say it's all a hoax or something." He grimaces, and nods toward Godric. "He's right, though. Lydia is able to see that Godric has no open wounds, and she thinks it unlikely that the disease could pass through simple contact alone - she thinks it would need to get in through a cut or imbibing it in some way. From her experience and to her knowledge, the group isn't locked in with a soon-to-be zombie - though he should get his clothing cleaned up as soon as possible, and likely in a way that doesn't get the goo into a water line if he can help it.

After a few minutes, an officer finally comes by. "All right, we can do this one of two ways," he speaks, looking more at a notebook in his hands than at the assembled group. "We can take you back one at a time and have you all each give your account as to what happened - which is standard - but with all the activity going on, the department's booked up with getting the quarantine set up and getting the curfew patrols in place... so if it's all the same to you, I'm going to break protocol and just interview you all at once. We do also need you to take these," he adds, holding out five mouth swabs, the same sort doctors use for checking for strep throat. "We need a cheek swab from each of you, just get that done, put 'em back in the bag, write your name on it with this sharpie... yeah. We can do that as we walk down the hall," the man says. The officer is wearing a nameplate that reads 'Ruckers', and it looks like he's been up since at least three in the morning. Seems as though he's eager to get this paperwork out of the way and the group out of his hair.

The group is led from the cell down a short hallway to some sort of meeting room. The door is locked from the outside by another officer standing guard once everyone has filed inside. There is a table with three chairs around it, one which the officer claims and two across from him. Benji takes a glance around, noting the mirror on one side of the room, behind the officer. It's about as classic as interrogation scene as there ever was in any buddy cop movie, except less handcuffs and more people. Benji sits down his packaged-up cotton swab on the table, and glances up as Officer Ruckers nods his approval.

"Right... I'll just collect those saliva samples, sit 'em here," Ruckers says, indicating to stack them where Benji's already put his. "And, let's see, who've we got here... Godric , no criminal record... though your father and step-father's track records indicate... bah," he huffs. "I'm not much of one for 'like father, like son.' We've got Lydia Miranda, Benjamin Alexander. Both no criminal record. Good, good... Nando Boltman... nothing until today, where we've got you carrying a concealed weapon without a permit," he says, quirking his brow up at the man. And then, the officer gives a beleaguered sigh. "And... Ace Harlow. Carrying without a permit, discharge of a firearm within city limits, unlawful possession of government property... and your landlady called us again this morning. You're late on rent."

Pinching the bridge of his nose, Officer Ruckers lets out a sigh. "We'll get all of those details squared away shortly. For now, let's just talk about what happened during today's incident, so these nice people [I]without charges can get home before curfew." He looks up at the group, glancing between each of them and waiting for someone to start speaking.

Godric follows the officer to the room and does the swab as quickly as possible and places it on the table. I was sitting down next to a building when this thing or zombie came towards me. At first I just swung my bat as a warning the it went a bit hectic from there. My questions to you are a bit simple. Was there anymore zombies in town? How did that zombie get there? Are there anymore around? Lastly what’s going on with the quarantine and when might this be handled? Godric asks firing off the questions he has running through his head.

Ace follows along quietly, saying nothing to get them into further trouble as he'd promised. The name rang a bell-Ruckers. He'd seen him around the office a bit, back when he was still on the force. He didn't really know the man that well, not that it'd probably help if he did.

He does his cheek swab without complaint, though they certainly knew who he was already. Gotta play along with the procedure.

"Not much to explain, it seems like. A member of the public was in danger, and I acted accordingly. Maybe if your perimeter had been tighter there wouldn't have been a f-cking zombie trying to eat someone in the first place." He makes no attempt to hide the bitterness in his voice.

Ruckers let out another long sigh. "Ace, there were police on the scene..." he said. "Police that, I remind you, did handle the situation, at least from what I understand. Is that correct?" he asked.

"Yeah," Benji said. "They were... incredibly efficient once the gun had gone off. Can I ask, though, is there an actual protocol for when you all are allowed to start shooting at a suspected zombie? I mean, obviously, the threat was real, this time, but what if you actually, you know, opened fire on a civilian...? Some idiot stupid enough to pretend to be a zombie?"

"Right, I suppose you all have a right to those questions," Ruckers said. He looked to Godric first, addressing his questions one at a time. "We have quarantined off the areas with known zombie activity. The area within the city itself is not large, and civilians are strongly advised, of course, to avoid the area... just as they are strongly encouraged not to pull any stunts like you just suggested, Benjamin. Doing otherwise is taking your life into your own hands, and I certainly hope you don't have any plans to-"

"Oh, no, no, not me. I'm way smarter than that," the blue-haired boy assured quickly. The officer nodded his approval.

"Right... as for the quarantine itself, we've got the blockades being set up right now. We first secured the active area, and now our force is working on securing the borders of the city itself... we do have a specialized unit working on the incident this afternoon. Finding out where that rogue zombie came from, if there's another hive..."

"Hive?" Benji asked, looking troubled. "We've got f*cking hives in our city?"

"Just a generic term," Ruckers assured, suddenly averting his gaze. "Does anyone else want to add details to this report? Miss Miranda, Mister Boltman?"

Nando watches the proceedings with interest. The "saliva" wasn't dangerous directly off the bat, which was great news. And even better, the police were finally making progress with the group. He swabs carefully, penning his name neatly on the side and setting down the whole package. He sits down and begins with the explanation. "I live alone, and I'd heard bad things about -well, zombies. It normally stays at home, but I got a little paranoid today. Decided to take it with me for the way back home. After listening to the Mayor talk I went and bought some supplies, and my path back put me where we are now. The gun stayed un-drawn and unfired despite the danger. Make of that what you will."

He raises a brow at Ace's talking, suppressing a sigh as he waits on the officer's reply. If Ace wanted to dig himself a hole, that was his problem. Long as it didn't keep Nando here for longer.

His gaze narrows as the officer concludes.
"I don't think there's much more to add. Care to let us know what areas to stay away from? So we can avoid another run in with zombies, stay out of trouble."

The officer nods to Nando, letting out a deep breath. "Right, of course... the information will be distributed shortly-" He is suddenly cut off by the sound of blaring sirens. The bored, tired look on Ruckers' face is wiped away immediately, and he gets to his feet. "Bloody hell..." he grumbles, reaching for his gun.

"What!? What is it, what's going on?" Benji demands, looking around the room frantically as though he expects zombies to flood in from the corners.

"Well... no point now in keeping it quiet," Ruckers says. He winces. "I'm sure you noticed that the police presence could have been heavier-"

"Stop dithering and just f*cking explain! You said hives, where the f*ck-"

"The sewers," Ruckers says. "I was told we extinguished all of 'em, but they kept sending people down there."

The sewers. Hives in the sewers. That meant there was little point in a quarantine, if there were so many of them down there that the police couldn't contain... access to the sewers meant access to the whole city. So what did that siren mean?

If you can controll it let people out of the city or an outbreak can start if one hasn’t started already. he says trying to think of a safe way out of this. At least we should make a secured section of town that has the sewers blocked off until you guys fix the situation. Or we might have a very dangerous situation on our hands.

Hesitating a bit he finishes We should at least make sure we are safe in here. The warning what does it mean? Can we have our weapons back in case we need to do self defense if no one is around? he looks to the cop hoping for some explanations before what seems like a very dire situation.

Ace starts to make a snide comment about perimeter security again, but pales as the implications of what the officer said sinks in. Hives in the sewers, too entrenched for the police to take care of... that meant the problem was far, far worse than expected, and that basically nowhere was safe. He follows the officer to get what possessions he has--though that's not much, besides the pistol.

"No bunker, sorry. Don't have the money for anything like that. I've got a bag of supplies at my apartment; I would prefer to get that if we can. Best we stick together and avoid the large groups, though, I agree." He indicates the location of his apartment on the map.

Ace's house would be quite close.
As soon as Benji has his phone in his hands, he's immediately unlocking the screen to try and get in contact with his parents. There are a few missed messages that he quickly sweeps past to go straight to the caller. As he speaks to what seems to be his concerned mother, he grabs the rest of his stuff and makes sure his katana is where he can reach it. He's never used the thing for actual combat before, he just hopes he doesn't have to. Hopefully, they'll be able to steer clear of danger... and this ex-cop, crazy as he seems, is probably one of the only people in town who might actually have an escape plan ready to go for this sort of scenario...

"Yeah, I love you too. I'll see if I can get in contact with dad... I don't know what I'm going to do yet. Stay locked in and stay with Jamie, I'll get back to you soon," he says, before hanging up the phone. He makes sure to do his best staying with the others, keeping an eye on Ace as his fingers next search for his father's contact.

Ruckers, armed with his government issue glock - identical to Ace's - stays with the group, as well. "All right, let's all stay together and not panic," he huffs. As one of the police's main "paper-pushers," Ruckers doesn't exactly look like he's cut out for running from zombies or rushing through their lines, a touch on the overweight side. But nonetheless he's as determined to escape this situation as the rest of the group. Other policemen in the rooms nearby are already on the move. Someone - likely someone in charge - is relaying orders to seal up the sewers 'before this gets out of control' and to evacuate people as quickly as possible to one of the five designated safe zones in the city. It seems as though they still intend to keep up the quarantine... no one entering or leaving the city itself.

Godric grabs a marker from a nearby table and circles Ace’s apartment. He also circles the five safe zones he asks to the cops. Then he passes the markers around the group asking them to mark where they need to go if they have any places in mind. (For close ones and relatives.) After the map is marked by everyone in the group. Godric draws a blue line with what he thinks is the safest route. (Preferably less crowded roads with ways to go around easily in case they have to flee.) with a red marker he draws the fastest and most direct routes to get to the places even if it’s more dangerous.

I think we should follow the blue route. Unless you guys have a better way to handle this? Closest spots first and we follow it for everyone’s loved ones. Then at the last stop we head for the nearest safe area. Or out of town or try to stay low. I think staying low is the worst of all three options though. I also think if we get in a dangerous spot we might want to rush to a safe area.

But since we have the police with us maybe they will be willing to escort us a bit? Godric says hopefully. It is their job to protect civilians after all.

"When it's either come with you or let this merry bend follow your directions, Ace, you can bet I'm coming along," Ruckers says, though there's a bit of humor in his voice. He gives the map a once-over, looking at the route Godric's planned. "I would recommend staying to the safer routes, of course... though I don't know how each of you handles those weapons of yours, better safe than sorry."

Nando nods his agreement with the plotted route. "Yeah. Yeah sure. Let's move. " His focus seems to be more on survival than any humor.
