So my Arcane Trickster Rogue knows Grease. I...didn't see the bit where it says to only pick Illusion or Enchantment school spells. But it's cool. My question is: we rule that the grease from the eponymous spell is flammable, so how much damage does it do? My instinct is to treat it the same as oil (5 flat damage per round for two rounds). Does anyone else have their own rulings?

What system? I'm assuming some variant of d&d, in which case this belongs in the relevent subforum.

The Mod Wonder: I guessed it was 5e.

If you're ruling it burns like oil, I think using the rules for oil is reasonable.

Aye, it's 5e.

Well, if you rules that it burns, then yeah making it burn like oil is pretty logical.

Why rule that it burns, though? The spell does not need a power boost.

Tbh, I don't know! But it's cool, and I guess it's a tradeoff for damage instead of more difficult terrain.

You get a handful of spells that can be from any school. When you first get spellcasting at level 3, you learn 3 spells, two of which must be illusion or enchantment. Grease could be the third, and it's not a bad choice for that.

I just wish grease scaled like fog cloud. I want to trip a whole army

My DM ruled that it burned the same way as the web spell. Made everything simple since there's already an established rule for burning away a control spell.

If you wanted, could change it so the whole thing lights at once, then disappears unless something flammable is keeping it there.
