We are about to start a new campaign and I want to run a kobold trickster rogue. I am trying to flesh out the concept. We play in forgotten realms. Just hoping for some inspiration.

Well, the Realms are a big place, but the two big ones are see:

1) You're one of the sewer clans who lives in a big city. You steal, you hunt rats, you trade a bit in low town... and you came across something that requires you to leave. Maybe information about a big score. Maybe something that'll get him killed.

2) Your clan was wiped out by adventurers, and you joined up with them to protect yourself. You started as a servant, but you got some rogue training. That group of adventurers eventually got themselves killed, but you made it back to civilization, where you were slightly known, and hooked up with a new group of adventurers, this time as an equal.

You were human. You stole from the wrong wizard...

A clan of kobolds wound up under the influence of a lawfulish and/or goodish metallic dragon, who took it as an interesting challenge to teach the kobolds morals and manners. They try to resist their chaotic and/or evil impulses, but lawful goodness doesn't come easily. They understand that stealing is taking something without payment, though the mutual agreement between parties and relative value of goods eludes them, so your kobold might sneak into a shop at night and "buy" a handful of healing potions by leaving "payment" in the form of an old boot. For good measure, make sure your int is 8 so that even once the paladin in the party has instructed you on the concept of currency as a medium for exchange, under no circumstances are you to be able to do math.

Well, the Arcane Tricksters' magic is based on wizardry, and while they don't have any issue with arcane magic, kobolds are traditionally and naturally more inclined toward sorcery. So maybe exploring how your Rogue went that path could be interesting.

Your character could have found an old mage lab with books on the theory of magic and used it as an hideout, for example. Or maybe you were a smuggler with several arcanists as customers.
