"Savage Attacks. When you score a critical hit with a melee weapon attack, you can roll one of the weapon's damage dice one additional time and add it to the extra damage of the critical hit."

If using something that uses 2 die, i.e. a Maul, would you let the character roll both D6 again, or just go by the RAW and roll only 1?

Is this really less effective than a Greataxe? Heck, even anything that rolls more than a D6?

Correct. Half-Orcs favor the greataxe. Specifically half-orc Champions and Barbarians or half-orc Champions/Barbarians.

I assume you mean brutal critical. And yeah, a greatsword would deal 5d6(17.5) on crits, and a greataxe 3d12(19.5).

The gap increases with more instances of brutal critical. A Half-orc barbarian 17 would deal 8d6(28) with a greatsword and 6d12(39) with a greataxe. The point of those features is to keep the greataxe relevant.

Half-orcs racial feature is called Savage Attacks (not to be confused with the Savage Attacker feat). Brutal Critical is the barb class feature.
