Polymorph and Hound of Ill Omen

Can you cast Polymorph on the Shadow Sorcerer's Hound of Ill Omen to turn it into something else?

E.g. could I turn my Dire Wolf (hound) into a Giant Ape?

It's specifically a creature, so you should be able to Polymorph it, but you can't Polymorph a CR 1 creature into a CR 7 creature, so no giant apes. It has to be something with a CR no greater than hound's (which is 1).

It's behaviours are not a part of what it is, but are from the magical effects that created it. So even if you polymorphed it, it would still do the exact same things it does because of the magic that created it.
