can anyone tell me if the machinist artificer specialty path is a official playtest option (like the raven queen patron warlock) or is it just a random fan creation? i got a player that would like to play one in my home game, but i haven't seen to much of this class online yet.

anyone with experience playing with one? is it balanced?

I don't believe this is a UA-artificer subclass.
as far as I know the current available ones are:
(2019) Alchemist - get a humonculus
(2019) Artillerist - get a turret

with the older UA subclasses being:
thunder-monger - get a gun
alchemist - alchemy pouch, with alchemical items.

you could re-flavor either of these as machinist, but as far as I know, this sounds like a homebrew.

There was also an Artificer Wizard UA, but that one wasn't any good.
