Animal Handling and dogs/wolf

Has anyone done this and how does it work in game?

Can I have a dog knock enemies prone?

We have a gnome Paladin who talks to animals and utilizes Animal Handling.

She has used these gifts during downtime to train a pair of dogs for tracking and sentry duty.

She trained a Panther as a mount, and she has used a falcon at one point for hunting purposes.


While there is no clear rule, our GM rules that a week of training is sufficient to train an animal for a single task or duty. He kinda slide rules it based on difficulty and character abilities like being able to speak directly to the animal.

With a successful check, the trainined animal will perform the task. Generally it won’t do much beyond what it has been trained, but with enough time and resources you can have some helpful allies at your disposal.
